Another great movie by one of Hollywood's best, Christopher Nolan. I was really into this movie, Al Pacino is awesome, but I think Williams is not the best choice for Dormer's opponent, cause he always has something friendly in his eyes. A thing that does not really fit. Despite some minor flaws "Insomnia" convinced absolutely

Just a couple comments having lived in Alaska: 1) Nightmute is far enough south that it does get dark for a couple hours, even on the summer solstice, and 2) especially for that area there was a definite imbalance of the white/native ratio. Those didn't really make the movie worse, but I did notice them.

The story, while morally complex, fails to engage. There are fine performances all around, also well crafted scenes, but at the end of the day two uncomfortable characters agree a little too quickly to help each other out, whilst not having quite enough cat and mouse play to elevate the story beyond the strictly average. Thus the movie never seems to twist for a second on its road to a very often visited end station.

Everything is decent. Pacino's performance is pretty good but not great due to a lack of character depth. Robin Williams doesn't exactly have enough screen time for his performance to impress too much, even if it is one of his darker roles and played very well at that. I've seen it a couple of times, but it isn't all that memorable.

By FAR my least favorite Nolan feature (and probably not coincidentally his only one he didn't co-write), but it's still got some creepy highlights and and a stark, tense style - let's call it "Alaskan noir." The murder mystery story just isn't as interesting as Nolan's other films. Pacino's performance is okay; he mostly resists the urge to Pacino out on us, and Williams is interestingly cast.

A intriguing and well-written thriller, it feels shallower than many of Nolan's other offerings. Robin Williams also seems perhaps a bit out of place in his role. But the movie otherwise seems to mostly achieve what it set out to do and be.

All 3 leads in this film do an excellent job with their role. The script is good, it has a lot of interesting scenes and moments. The story is told in a linear fashion unlike some Christopher Nolan films. Overall I would recommend this thriller.

The Norwegian policier of a few years earlier, and of the same name, is resettled under the midnight sun of Alaska. Fair enough. (The icy moonscape of the opening aerial shots is no less otherworldly.) Pacino plays up the sleep deprivation for all it's worth, and a good deal more, looking as if he's trying to win a marathon staring contest and speaking in a come-and-go drawl that sounds less regional in origin than medical or medicinal.

I actually watched this movie while dealing with a bit of insomnia, and I gotta say, it helped! The movie really captures the feeling of sleeplessness and (as is to be expected by a Christopher Nolan film) puts you directly in the characters' point of view in a way that few other movies can.

Nolan's only film not written by him or his brother and it feels distinct in this regard. The acting is subtle and, while slow, the story is intriguing and the cinematrogaphy is top notch. On the whole, the movie is quite good.

Christopher Nolan's direction is once again flawless, the setting is stunning and Al Pacino delivers another terrific performance. And yet, the film isn't really scary or suspenseful. Casting Robin Williams as the villain may initially seem as a bad idea -and it is, because it simply doesn't work. Yet, this is a thoroughly enjoyable and haunting thriller.

Insomnia is a solid murder-mystery that doesn't do anything special, but is an easy watch thanks to the intelligent main character, as well as the moral choice that is asked at the end. It doesn't break the mold, and it doesn't try to be anything more than a fun thrill ride. But for what it is, it's enjoyable and will keep you entertained for a couple of hours.

It's an ok one-watch movie: interesting enough to keep my interest throughout. But that is just so far below what it should be as a Nolan movie. The mystery isn't engaging, and the metaphors are so ham-fisted (get it: the cop can't sleep????). A dropped ball for a master filmmaker.

Phew. Finally, a movie that I was actually engrossed in for at least 90% of its duration. Nolan might just be my favourite American director, not including the Batman stuff (which is also pretty good, to be fair). Loses a bit of steam towards the end and the insomnia part is actually kinda silly (as is the villain's final words. Seriously, c'mon), but Pacino's great and the female lead looks otherworldly, so I dug just about everything else.

I agree with the sentiment that this is far from Nolan's best film, yet I don't find anything bad about it really. Pacino and Williams are amazing in this film, and Nolan's cinematography is crisp as usual. My problems lie mostly in writing, but they're minuscule, as this is still a kick-ass crime thriller.

An overall entertaining if somehow "small" film. From a screenwriting aspect it is rather typical, but the landscape and the insomnia of the lead (a very convincing Al Pacino) make it stand out. Still, the real tension can be found only in the last half hour, Robin Williams is too flat to become a good bad guy and Hilary Swank seems totally unaffected by the story.

it had a lot of potential in the first half and could have been a masterpiece but it was just not as mysterious enough as it should have become, There was more focus on Will not getting sleep than him feeling guilty, Robin William didn't give his best performance for a psycho killer. Insomnia is a solid thriller from Christopher Nolan and it shows how high the standard of his filmmaking is when this is branded his weakest film. It's fitting to see a director of Christopher Nolan's calibre collaborating & getting the last great performance out of the legendary Al Pacino. And Robin Williams is such a shrewd casting choice and he is remarkably convincing playing against type. The impressive editing is integral to the suspense and Wally Pfister's cinematography is stunning.
