A young man meets a young woman under a bridge by a railroad. They shelter from the rain and exchange a kiss. The man grows sullen and leaves. The film starts with him and ends with her. It's a straightforward anecdote told in traditional ways, the likes of which he'd forsake forever; that is, it uses actors, a soundtrack with music and post-dubbed sound effects, a photographer who frames everything professionally and a coherent edited narrative. I appreciate what he's going for here, and I have a weakness for this kind of wandering slice-of-life short (like Brault's Genevieve or Blank's The Sun's Gonna Shine), but these two on screen just aren't compelling enough to carry it. Brakhage has a great many skills, but directing actors is not among them.

The first film of several hundred. This is not terribly avant-garde... a guy and a girl wander around, duck into a shack to get out of the rain, make out, at which the tone becomes gloomier. I kept thinking of Rohmer during it, perhaps the kind of thing he might do if he were to do a silent short. A nice start to a productive career, even though it little resembles his familiar style.

A boy walks under a rail bridge and encounters a girl. They walk together and take shelter from the rain. They kiss, but later separate. Stan Brakhage's directorial debut is a beautifully strange little vignette featuring an interesting performance from 15 year old Janice Hubka.
