The first movie in Nolan's incredibly accomplished filmography to receive a thumbs down from me. As well as warranting a big fat middle finger, too. I don't particularly mind the sappy message, but I have a huge problem with thought provoking themes being underdeveloped and, ultimately, abandoned. They should have called it The Overambitious, Predictable, Pretentious, and Far From Stellar Mystery of the Morsing Bookcase Ghost. What a letdown! The best thing about it was the design of the robots.

Huge excellent cast. Interesting, intelligent, exciting and engaging story. Great acting and dialog. Wonderful video, music, CGI and SFX. Fun to watch, even though very long. A few awe inspiring moments and if you can accept wormholes is at least somewhat plausible science . But, I didn't like the spooky messages in the dust. A little mushy at the end, but it was good closure to the story. Some flaws, but mostly good.

Not only does Nolan force you to suspend your belief in his ability to write a coherent story, you're forced to suspend your belief in the value of entertainment as well, slogging through 3 hours of tortured analogies, kitschy science, and low-grade philosophizing that's clouded in meaninglessness. A few magnificent space scenes allude to what might have been, but alas, that version of Interstellar is far away in another dimension. Note: My opinion of this movie has improved in hindsight.

2001's plot, by way of Contact's emotional through-line, with just a hint of Sunshine's disappointing villain / third act twist. Nolan's biggest flaws are on display, but so are his greatest strengths, along with some new ambition and emotional power. Some may claim Nolan can't match Kubrick's visual language and instead relies on overdone exposition, and though that's partially true, you can hear a few visuals very explicitly say "I dare you to watch this IMAX shot on your fucking cell phone."

Coolest part about this film was not knowing the casting (besides McConaughey), then when I first heard TARS, I said to myself, "hmmm...they got Matt Damon for the voice", then when I heard CASE, I thought "hmmm..Casey Afleck is the voice for this one".....then the film proceeded to blow my mind as both Damon and Affleck showed up on screen. Looking at the credits, I learn that neither voiced either robot. Then I realized the tv was off the whole time!!! And now I'm standing right behind you.

(after repeat viewings) The more I ponder this film, the more annoyed I become with its contrived exposition, temporal incoherence and blatant disregard of scientific integrity. More impressive, however, are the film's often breathtaking visuals which, although not matched by a Kubrickian sense of composition, evoke an unmistakable feeling of awe and a throbbing sense of uncertain exhilaration. A serviceable adventure albeit not the space epic I was hoping for.

When you go sci-fi you kinda need to make a choice: science or themes. Being that none of this stuff exists, things always travel to the realm of pseudoscience, but I'm willing to suspend disbelief. But when you push the science/pseudoscience hard and then throw it all away because The Power of Love by Heuy Lewis and the News, it completely ruins what you built up. Had some great moments, but the third act took a steamy 80's synth shit. (No offense to Mr. Lewis, your music is fine)

'Interstellar' is a hard movie to rate. As a blockbuster the story is a cut above the rest, but Nolan's lack of visual flair detracts from the spectacle. Viewed as hard sci-fi the third act is an incredible letdown, a dumb man's '2001: A Space Odyssey', set in a world where they have invented funny robots, but not the technology of greenhouses. What the Nolans attempted cannot be done. Hard-fi and Blockbusters don't mix. But should they be punished for their ambition?

Another teeth-grinder from Nolan. The overwhelming cinematic experience mostly succeeds in hiding the many mistakes and scientific bullshit that Interstellar so blatantly throws at you. But after subsequent and thorough viewings, the outright arrogance with which this film was created becomes clear. Smothered with pseudo-science and philosophy, filled with false sentiment for the sake of cheap emotional involvement, and even boasting the occasional sensational action sequence.

Of course any film that throws itself at temporal phenomena as unfearingly as "Interstellar" does open itself up for criticism. But you really shouldn't care. I loved this. Its themes, its visuals, its sound and its cast. This is big spectacle, Chris Nolan style, and very simply I am always up for a bit of that.

i have never disliked nolan's exposition. i have never disliked his detatchment. i have always liked his visuals, which here are very good, and could have been extraordinary if not constantly obscured by spaceship parts and impatient editing. what ruins this is something he usually avoids: love philosophy. if this initially was a celebration of exploration, it isn't by the end. it is about love. that is fine, but once one starts talking about love as the fifth dimension, i step off the ship.

I would go as far to call this pretty groundbreaking, Interstellar, while it may not appeal to everybody, is quite possibly one of the most visually splendid movies we'll get in years. McConaughey is good and this movie served up quite a few twists and surprises and it was intense above all. Also has an emotion grasp to it. Writing and directing are solid as usual from Christopher Nolan and an incredible music score. Worth a watch for his fans and just in general.

I was absolutely engrossed for the first 45 minutes or so, but soon realised nothing was going to happen. By the time we reached the ending it seemed laughable to me, like a short story from a sci-fi anthology in a school library. Like all "Odyssey" genre films, there's a danger that the episodes between the first and last ones feel disconnected and ultimately pointless. That's how I felt - that the middle two hours I'd spent gazing at beautiful images were disconnected, dreary, and pointless.

Interstellar has shortcomings, but in such an immense display they fall by the wayside. This is the first Nolan film that's felt its length for me, but that's not necessarily bad because it also happens to be his dramatically heaviest film. He achieves something he's often been criticized for lacking: pathos. It's beautifully and uniquely done, as expected, and McConaughey trumps his Oscar-winning role with this performance. This succeeds where Gravity failed: it's a spectacle with a heart.

Possibly the most left-brained filmmaker at work today, Nolan tacks his not-insignificant themes (what is love? what is mankind's destiny?) to a narrative so beholden to a set of rules that, self-defeatingly, it runs slipshod over character & idea alike (see: Inception). Judging by how he shoehorns Dylan Thomas into his script 20 times, Nolan thinks he has something important to say. Remove the narrative tricks, & we have a rudimentary time travel story w/ a quaint moral about parental devotion.

Credit where it's due: Nolan is ambitious, and momentarily throughout the film, we are presented with big ideas and beautiful artistic interpretations of the universe. Unfortunately Nolan treats the space exploration with the same lack of enthusiasm as a tired tourist guide and instead focuses on the human drama, which could have worked, had the characters been more human less plot propellant, making the climatic shift from physics to metaphysics particularly shallow.

If I was 15 years old and this was my 2001, I would be completely blown away. But I'm not, and it's not. The comparison to Kubrick is unfair, but understood: a multidimensional adventure, with honest humanity the whole way through. Nolan also successfully blends indie-film intimacy and blockbuster thematics. This is a massive movie with incredible creative intentions; my appreciation for the attempt overshadows the flaws. An immense watch, especially in 70mm IMAX.

It's agonising to think of the potential that was wasted, some gorgeous visuals and occasional epic bursts from the musical score come crashing down to earth with some flat dialogue, characters and plot. Anything that isn't pretty, shiny and spacey is a morass of sentimental slush. The ending rivals The Abyss for worst alternative plot idea instead of just killing off one of your main characters.

The grandiose spectacle of space venture is marred by Nolan's increasing intent on sterile exposition and his usual stuffing: inspirational one-liners and ancillary characters, that are anything but. All this hollows the emotional connections for a movie that relies so much on it. Still, on those rare moments, you can see the shimmer of brilliance; unfortunately, I can't shake the feeling as if someone saw 2001 and thought it could improve by dumping more exposition.

A bloated graphics demo with the most contrived second half you're likely to see. Similarly to Gravity, the movie has lots of pretty scenes, which might have something to do with its setting. The delusions of channeling Stanley Kubrick are a laugh. Speaking of trying to reproduce great things without their context, Philip Glass might want a word with Hans Zimmer after this one.

The plot is over-engineered, attempting to reconcile long-winded and sterile exposition with puzzle-piece revelations. It's rigid, allowing no room for ambiguity or subtlety, nor for the wonder that outer space inspires. Not that it's cold or heartless, because there's plenty of metaphysical nonsense about love saving the world. Beneath the hard-science surface is a grossly sentimental film.

If someone were to ask me whether or not Interstellar was worth watching, I would say that it was. I would preface that answer by saying that it's too long and that it often attempted to be an emotional roller coaster that wound up being more like a carousel. There are still highs and lows, but they're more predictable and less intense. Still, it has a few terrific performances -- that make it far more watchable than it would be with lesser actors -- and it looks beautiful from start to finish.

In other words, it's like "2001" with none of the artistic vision and a whole lot of stupid explanations for shit and WAY too frantic a plot. if you really loved this movie, then we have a problem with you.. every nolan film gets worse than the former one and here is where we stand now. ordinary, cliche, nothing special.. excessive, always wannabe epic music usage (also sounds like ripped off from early philip glass), failure on character development etc. hard to find something to like in this flick. total let down.. unfortunately nolan keeps on getting more mediocre in every movie. what a disappointment.. Some parts are a bit thin, as has been the case with Nolan a few times before. He's very good at packaging plot holes in a way that makes them seem less like plot holes and more like mysteries. That said, I couldn't care less, I loved this and it's the best film of 2014. The visuals, music, acting - amazing. An absolute spectacle. This is exactly what a blockbuster should be, though I wouldn't have minded a different ending. Adventurous and awe-inspiring, Gravity wishes it had been this movie.

Considering this a movie from Christopher Nolan I expected so much more. It is a scifi movie, and I am willing to accept the science of this movie. Nolan tried way to hard to create way too many twists and long dramatic speeches backed by voodoo science. Finally, the last nail in the coffin what doesnt make sense is explained by all powerful love. The movie gets a higher rating than what it deserves because of the visual effects. The movie is just way too long. The worst Nolan movie.

An achievement in capturing the pioneering spirit of man, and the desire to continue existence (from several different standpoints) no matter what. Yes there is some hokey philosophical nonsense and the comparisons to 2001 are well deserved, yet it still maintains its own identity and legitimacy as a story. Not for everyone, especially if you need a traditional story arc of action and reaction, but I felt it well worth the time spent.

At the same time, a lot of it is boring and redundant gobbledygook, often amounting to no more than "people, space, woah." Interstellar was my most anticipated film of 2014 and it's almost perfect. Christopher Nolan once again excels himself and this is certainly his most ambitious work to date. For me this film evoked the same sense of scale and wonder only previously achieved by '2001'. McConaughey is incredible and Hathaway & Chastain are strong also. Hans Zimmer's score gave me goosebumps and visually I was overwhelmingly transfixed. There are undeniable flaws, but otherwise this film is truly astonishing.

This is 3 hours of Star Wars & 2001 Gen-X Film Bro Love where a farm boy teams with an old man and sassy robot for consciousness changing space exploration. Nolan's tropes are annoying here; namely the arguments on suppressing emotion and bad women characters putting on a dramatic competition to outcrazy Ophelia. The Philip Glass-style soundtrack creates a cool elegiac commentary on humanity. Recommended, but I would've enjoyed it more if it weren't marketed as the Greatest Cinematic Event Ever.

The biggest surprise to me is that this was probably Nolan's most emotionally effective film. Perhaps interestingly, then, the biggest weakness is that it goes overboard into the cheese at times. The "science" could certainly be criticized and the plot holes were many, but it swept me up enough to enjoy the ride. The visuals were pretty great and the sound design was effective (apparently the mix didn't sound too great in IMAX, but I didn't see it in IMAX).

For every invigorating moment (such as entering the wormhole), there are one or two bizarre narrative moves (a character's unconscionable lie, another character's deathbed rejection of someone else).

It had a wonderful, outstanding beginning and middle, and then it's like the writer got stoned off his ass, drank an entire twelve pack by himself, and just decided to write a NEW movie, but just for the ending. It went from "Alright, this is pseuoscience, but it's beautiful so let's roll with it!" to "What the hell...? ...Wait, what? Uhhh...." It feels like two different movies in one. The first is great, and the second shouldn't exist.

Since the Dark Knight, for me Nolan has been like one of those bands that you love and annoy people by saying "I love their early stuff, man, but since they became popular they just got too commercial". The plot trickery reminded me of The Prestige, but this isn't half as good. The cheesy love stuff edged it towards the same kind of pseudo-philosophical silliness as The Matrix. WIth an editor, could've been a great 90 minute film.

A science fiction epic that adores its genre predecessors as much as its American socio-historical context, which makes it practically impossible for me not to enjoy it. But then it happens to have some of the most magnificent spectacle I've ever seen in movies, powered by a consistent, genuinely emotional narrative. Nolan's older work looks like hollow exercise now. This is an instant favorite and, as I am sure I will argue in the years to come, an American classic.

Like so many films, visually stunning but the plot is complete nonsense. Found i didnt care about most of the characters and the ending contains a lot of deus ex machina.

Is this movie flawed? Yes. Does that stop the movie from achieving its main goal? No, and resoundingly so at that. Simply put this is an emotional thriller. Interstellar grabs ahold of your emotions in a way no film has ever done before. In achieving that I give a lot of credit to composer Hans Zimmer and cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema who create the perfect marriage of music and image. On top of that the cast and acting are great. And if it wasn't already clear I'd call it Nolan's best film.

So yes, Interstellar is a very flawed film that I enjoyed and wouldn't hesitate to consider as essential cinematic experience. It offers the best and worst of Nolan's attributes from its awe-inspiring visual command and sense of scope to the relatively satisfying but much spottier emotional through-line and clunky exposition. Few directors currently working today challenge the mold of blockbuster filmmaking the way Nolan does so it's easy to admire, if not exactly love, this ambitious endeavor

Anytime someone can make an audience question the realism within a science *fiction* film I feel they have done their job. Interstellar boasts some very imaginative and fun ideas while mastering the suspense behind every single thing we take for granted in this genre. Yet even with the many nods, when compared to the almighty Kubrickian masterpiece it still falls way short. It lacks the philosophical awe that accompanies the mysteries of the universe. Still quite an awesome experience.

A science-fiction epic focusing heavily on 'science' and hereby forgetting that fiction is always more important for these kind of adventures. Thanks to the great cinematography and perfect soundtrack this imbalance is easily overlooked, but on the contrary, the overwhelming amount of melodrama is NOT. The final act was especially hard to digest; it seems as if Hollywood threw away a decent ending and just did some lame stuff about love transcending the space-time border instead. Dude, what?

Goofy assed Star Wars prequel with rigorously mundane effects. Has a really lively and spirited cameo featuring an evil astronaut, which bumps it up a few points. Lets McConaughey say "slick" one too many times, for some reason, a sure sign of a director who either doesn't pay that much attention to the actors, or can't pick a script worth a damn.

Opening shot indicates this is an ode to the human adventure and its physical, intellectual and technical pioneers, playing on fears of this adventure's end. But it is also an engagement with (even update of) 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY (and in the end with SOLARIS), and is quite cinematically and thematically ambitious, though the Nolans fail to avoid silliness and low-grade philosophising about love that seems light-years from either Kubrick or Tarkovsky. The visual imagination is mostly impressive.

Impractical, irrational and tries to romanticize science fiction. Obfuscates facts to carry on with its lunacy. The Earth is dying, for some reason, and our best chance is a wormhole to another galaxy. So off they go with crysosleep and exceptional space tech, yet they cannot grow crops properly. Forget all logic; one character hides the truth in a robot that is booby-trapped, yet accessible to anybody. What a genius! And for god sake, Doyle, get in the Shuttle before you drown.

The nearly 3 hour runtime was easily justified and even now I feel like a lot of ideas were introduced somewhere but never followed up on, probably because there was no more time. The scientific accuracy or logical plot consistency of the film often had to make way for spiritual and cinematic moments, which is something you'll just have to accept. Surprising score by Hans Zimmer, it really helped with the awe-inspiring and emotional feel this film gave me. Immense!

I'd give the execution a solid B-plus. It's beautiful to look at (props to Hoyte van Hoytema), excellently acted, with a strong Zimmer score. The latter-middle section with Matt Damon does get a bit draggy, but everything else is well-paced and engaging. I'd give it an A for ideas (albeit not an A-plus because of some cheesy theorizing on love): The film's exploration of time dilation, fourth/fifth-dimensional space, relativity, and just plain old outer space yielded great post-movie discussion.

A few problems. The pace is ponderous, but without the hypnotic quality that made 2001 so great. The internal logic of the movie is troublesome, especially at the end when the time travel comes into it. It's also distracting that 80% of the significant characters in the film are played by extremely famous people. You can't think about them as characters, only as the actors who portray them.

While it's hard to really care about Nolan's harsh self-explanatory script, I admit that some parts got me -- maybe because they carry such a strong heritage from the sci-fi films I love the most, such as Close Encounters and Abyss. There is such a striking sense of grandeur here, with a feeling of both emptiness -- hey, Earth is past now -- and hope -- what we will get out there? who's there helping us? Too bad Nolan brutalizes most of this trying to rationalize this scary, awesome, mystery.

Nolan has very bad habits, namely how grandeur can be undercut by characters' low-key response to it, endless exposition (bad speeches), and detours that go nowhere. But man, what a powerful cinematic experience this is. It's so earnest in its romantic view of space exploration, McConaughey is great and it's an audacious and often quite overwhelming visual and sonic experience. Falls short of a "2001"-like visionary achievement, but it's not nearly bad enough where I can fault it for trying.

Every scene becomes a predictable outcome of the previous as the writers choose the dull expository route everywhere. Genuine character interactions are ignored and the performances feel stilted. And every few minutes you're in for a good trolling, whether it's gravitational anomalies, astronauts being goofs during launch, or the dumbest-looking robot ever made.

You could forgive all the pseudoscience if this story had any heart but it doesn't and that's sadly what Nolan is turning in to - an emotionless filmmaker who desperately wants you to know how clever he is. Why so serious? Anne Hathaway gives legitimately the worst monologue about love in film history. He also needs to stop using mystery as a gimmick. He's slowly turning into M Night, people just haven't caught on yet. Also Murphy's law is anything that can go wrong, will go wrong. Fail.

Why directors feel the need to deafen their audience is beyond my understanding.My fingers were in my ears throughout the movie to endure it. Regarding the movie itself, its very confusing at times, in part because the voices are muffled by the booming surrounding noise and also because simply the storyline is not perfectly worked out.It was visually appealing, nicely sad at times, but without a clear story it doesn't stand up.

Interstellar is the most ambitious science fiction movie since "2001", and like its closest neighbor, it's dense, complicated, and in places hard to comprehend, but it's also a tremendous accomplishment that stands out as one of the most striking films of the last few years. Some will find it a tad too detached, but there is still a powerful emotional core to the film that pulls it all together. The ending could be better, but the movie is still (Inter)Stellar.

One of Nolan's most fundamentally flawed movies with a shallow basis in real science but a compulsion to awkwardly humanize it with sentimentality. The result is a collection of emotionally stirring scenes that are scientifically and narratively nonsensical, and it ultimately feels more like it comes from a Nolan imitator than the genuine article. Still, the main relationships resonate well, and some of the disconnected sci-fi ideas translate well to the screen, even if others don't.

The shortcomings of the narrative are glaringly bad by the time the third act comes around, but it is hard to ignore what comes before. A blend of stark visuals and a stunning score highlight the sense of awe that Nolan was clearly striving for. It is difficult to fault a film for its ambition and not reaching the astronomically (ha) high bar that we set for it.

It's no 2001, and definitely doesn't deserve the almost 3-hour runtime. Nonetheless, it is an exciting adventure, quite literally, through space and time. Visually the film is compelling, and the acting is mostly good. Sadly, they're trying to create unnecessary extra drama with silly subplots, because they're occasionally clueless what to do with the awesome subject. Also, I wonder how many people will want to jump into black holes after seeing this? I know I'm intrigued.

Frothy pseudo-science space adventure. Whilst the sheer spectacle of Nolan's vision is laudable, the screenplay leaves a lot to be desired. Torn between its hard(ish) sci-fi heart and human interest drama, the many plot contrivances and sappy interludes of a conventional blockbuster dilute what could be an interesting sci-fi film. A worrying amount of the film is directly lifted from 2001, but unlike Kubrick's masterpiece, Nolan's expositional dumps explain away most of the mystery and wonder.
