My ultimate standard by which a film fails is if I start thinking "Holy shit, when is this thing going to end?!" during it, and, despite a fairly standard two-hour runtime, this film fails said test. As it rolled into a whole additional giant-fighting bonus act past its natural endpoint, I began wishing I was anywhere else but in the movie theater. In the end, the "Agony" sing-off between the two princes is the only positive thing I took from the experience.

As faithful as a Disney adaptation could have been, this is still a watered-down version (both dramatically and comedically) of the great Sondheim/Lapine musical. Still, most of the performances are good and the actors all can sing, plus the film is shot well and the costumes are gorgeous.

I can't believe how much I enjoyed this. Going in I didn't know anything about the source material, I didn't even know it was a musical oddly enough, and I dug it. Everyone did a great job, it was funny and self-aware with wonderful songs. A great visual sense as well. Just a really fun movie.

It has enjoyable musical numbers and a genre self-awareness that had some potential, but it felt completely unrealized, as though there were a much more successful dark exploration of fairy tale logic lurking behind the scenes. I have been informed that in fact that successful version is the musical.

Agony. It was when the two mincing princes appeared and started hamming it up and dancing amongst the waterfalls that I realized I should never have been in the theater. And it was during the film's endless last movement that I realized this thing was a smug, morbid, would-be-deconstructionist paean to death and loss and dissatisfaction. All that, plus bad songs, too. Run away!

I like things about this. Being my first exposure to the material, the music itself is great, the cast is mostly on point and it has some interesting ideas. As a film, though, I'm not convinced that it holds together very well. The visuals are technically competent but creatively unimpressive (so grey!) and Marshall does a poor job at making the many story threads flow together smoothly. And good lord, Depp's (thankfully brief) scene is an ill-conceived nightmare. A real exhausting experience.

This is shockingly good. It operates on an unapologetically fantastical level with just a dash of self-awareness, and in so doing allows its audience to indulge and just have fun. Rob Marshall is getting noticeably better, too -- at least as far as directing musicals goes. He tapped into the energy that encapsulated Chicago and injects Into the Woods with it in healthy doses. Of course, the film's biggest asset is Sondheim's music, and these actors nail it across the board. Pretty dang good!

"Into the Woods" is a richly dynamic, inherently fascinating tale, a morally warped subversion of the fairy tales we've grown up hearing for generations. It's also a musical, mind, an adaptation of Sondheim's iconic stage version, and it is here where things start to fall flat. Half the songs are truly excellent, but many of them are akin to a run-on sentence, long-winded and dreary. Still, its ensemble cast is perfect, its world is gorgeous, and the tunes that land, land.

A fun musical twist on traditional fairy tales with lovely singing and great performances. The entire cast hits their notes and emotional cues perfectly, with the best of show being Meryl Streep, Chris Pine, Emily Blunt and Anna Kendrick. There are some strange tonal shifts, but they fit the dark and twisted humour of the Brothers Grimm storytelling. The third act hits a few pacing snags and loses some steam, but overall it is a fun musical.

Though it was enjoyable and serviceable as an adaptation, the movie version lacks the charms and dark humor of the stage version, which helps alleviate the dourness that permeates the second act. Unlike his standout Chicago, Marshall seems to play it safe, and at times it felt like a less claustrophobic version of Hooper's Les Miserables in how certain song were shot. The cast does a good job singing Sondheim's recitative and songs, but very few times did anyone stand out save for Emily Blunt.

The show has a handful of scenes with clever deconstructions of fairy tale lore, catchy tunes, and delightfully morbid moments, but they're all strung together by a shaky narrative that overstays its welcome and eventually begins to feel like a separate movie all together.

I'm a sucker for musicals. I couldn't help but enjoy the music. My interest definitely waned during the second half. I understand & appreciate what they were trying to do - subverting the "happily ever after" idea and showing that life doesn't really work that way - but it still has the effect of the film continuing after the story is over. Still, the visual style's nice, & the performances are mostly good.

Into the Woods is 90 minutes of a pretty fun movie, and then another 35 that really drags on and tarnishes what was done before. The premise gets tiresome after its "happy" ending, and by the time the plot makes a turn in a different direction, the film should have ended. The songs are catchy and mostly fun, so at least there's that. The ensemble cast isn't balanced well, and some of the actors can't sing and act at the same time. Unless you're a big fan of musicals and fairy tales, skip it.

Disclaimer: except 4 those Disney Alan Mencken insta-hits of the 90's, Broadway-style musical numbers need 2 grow on me. The inherently cartoonish characterizations & overlong two-act structure don't help me either, but the prince duet made me laugh & the profound insights into human nature in the film's climax (Being good and being nice aren't the same thing and "I'll always love the princess that got away") suggest fans of this kind of stuff will get a lot more out of it than I did

I new nothing about this movie beforehand except that it's a mashup of old tales in musical form. Parts of it were really good. I liked the music a lot. Tracey Ullman is a treasure and she should be in more stuff. Anna Kendrick was also very good but muted as usual. Kendrick and Blunt could tie for the most lifeless performers ever. Meryl Streep stole the show in this movie and she really wasn't in it much. Finally, who was it that tried to make James Corden a leading man? GTFO. It wasn't good.

The first half is exactly as magical and charming as you'd expect. The acting is good and the songs/singing are spot on. Lilla Crawford as Red Riding Hood was the real surprise of the movie. Just unexpectedly good. However the second half of the movie completely fizzles out. The novelty of the first half is entirely lost and everything seems dull. The songs start to feel like they go on forever. By the time the ending comes you're so disengaged you don't even care how bad and predictable it is.

I really enjoyed this adaptation. They did a fantastic job with "Agony", my favorite song in the show. I mean come on, having the princes do a pose off while singing in a waterfall? Brilliant. Anna Kendrick, Emily Blunt, James Corden, and Meryl Streep all gave stellar performances. For me, Kendrick was the standout as Cinderella. I found that I connected with her character much more in this version than I had any time I'd seen the stage production.

There's a lot of flashy stuff happening here, and nice special effects, but I just kept hoping for it to end and everyone to stop breaking into another song. I love how they based all the story's of the actual thing (e.g Cinderella running away from the three day ball) but it was all just bits and pieces that just don't add up in the end. And most of it are just people singing and don't get me wrong singing and opera are excellent but in a movie about fairytale so makes the movies essentially run much slower then necessary

The first act was a fun, revisionist parody of the genre but it only made way to a second act that was slow, tedious, confusing and seemed to serve no purpose. If the story cut out the entire second act, added some more depth and backstory and perhaps smoothed out the pacing it could have had the potential to be an excellent film.

Buoyed by a really good cast, this struck me as much more entertaining than my expectations (and the trailer) led me to believe! Everybody in this is good-to-very-good; I say that backed up by the knowledge that every character & performance OWNED the fact that this is intentionally campy. Due to that fact, it won't be everybody's cup of tea, but it was definitely mine. Watching Into the Woods, I kept thinking this sounds undeniably like Sondheim and feels a bit like Gilliam; I was half right. I didn't fucking understand it. The plot seemed to go everywhere, many things were introduced and then not explored leaving loose threads all over the place, manic pacing that didn't make sense. But then you find out it's another in the trend of Broadway musicals being made into feature films. So that's why it was disappointing. I did really like the song duet with Chris Pine. It's an interesting movie to say the least. Take fairy tale characters place them all in a musical that leads to their "happily ever after," then subvert it in the second part. The only problem with this is that the second part seemed too short. Maybe this was a problem with the movie and not the play, but it just felt like a rushed ending that just left you feeling like there needed to be another 15-20 minutes in there somewhere. It is largely well done, but the ending just disappointed.

There was one more song I wanted to hear from the Princes, but it wasn't sung. Visually, the film was great, but where the parts, and words, were supposed to be funny, it was just slightly touched, making it not very funny at all. Of course they wanted to make this "kid friendly" so Johnny Depp's song was toned down and so was when the Butcher's Wife was doing "kiss me and kiss me" not really putting that UMPH emphasis of what "the kiss me" was REALLY implying. The word "deft" might as well have been invented to describe Sondheim's work, with its tricky garden-path melodies and wit and insight packed into every single line. Production design is sensible, commercial, bordering on bland. Superfluous narration. While Marshall's stagey blocking sometimes lends the material the vitality of a Wizard of Oz or Donkey Skin, mostly it just seems rushed and uncinematic. The musical numbers (of which there are too many) are all bland, except for Agony, which only works because it's funny. Stephen Sondheim's beloved but uneven musical is brought to screen, with acting which generally does justice to the material, though the handling occasionally betrays a lack of cinematic finesse. A remixing and continuation of Cinderella, Jack & the Beanstalk, Rapunzel, and the tale of a childless couple which asks just how happy "happily ever after" is. The second act, which on stage proved problematic, here has been condense to make for a more enjoyable if vaguely ragged experience.

Well, the last third was okay...due to being less loud, less in-your-face, less annoying, less can't-take-a-fucking-breath-for-one-second, less dumb, a little less superficial and having less overacting and a little more substance. And less singing. I know it's a musical, but even in porn they have a few minutes without penetration. I get what they were trying to do, but - just like with existenZ - that doesn't really justify your movie sucking donkey dick for the greater part of its runtime.

It's OK, I suppose. The kids have pretty grating singing voices, that doesn't help. If they made it more comedic or more serious, that would have solidified the film for me.
