pshhhhtt. Meh.... I was kind of bored. Where the punch? A very prosaic documentary. Broken into 3 parts, which seemed sort of clumsy. Didn't show me anything I hadnt already seen. I really thought I'd like it too. Oh well...next.

Culturally fascinating documentary providing a useful snapshot of contemporary Iraq.

It's not a macro, comprehensive look at Iraq, but instead relies on the value of individual confession, allowing those on screen to speak for themselves, rather than having a narrator speak for them. Moving and sad.

"Style comes occasionally close to taking precedence over its heartfelt humanistic intentions, yet the film's deep respect for human resilience and hope ultimately renders cynical accusations of touristy condescension moot." - Fernando F. Croce

As artful as it is timely and informative, this multi-part documentary about life during wartime in Iraq opened my eyes in more ways than one. One of the must-see docs of the 2000s.

Undoubtedly the film's level of insight into the conflict as a whole doesn't leave its competitors in the dust, but this effort is still remarkable for a couple of reasons. First, the level of access that the director was given is astonishing (for example, the viewer sees a kidnapping with the sense of perspective that one would expect from a fictional film). Second, the whole thing is shot with a cinematographer's eye toward lighting and framing. It really is a beautiful movie just to look at.
