Irezumi

This was a very depressing film about two people s decent into the depths of despair and depravity. Well acted and filmed with minimal and effective use of music.

Not to be confused with 1982 namesake, the underlying thread of the tattoo is all they have in common. This is more coherent with straight line action and motives, but at the same time nastier. Better technically but less thought provoking. Well shot with an excellent period feel and played with a consistent theme of doomed lovers, he bewitched, she very quietly but very calculatingly using him for her own increasingly evil aims. In the end will there be retribution? No frontal female nudity.

Masumura's movies are really good, but nothing much more than that... I never feel strongly involved with the characters; and the plot, always seems kind of pointless and obvious, even Shindô ones.

Not the best of Masumura, but certainly a beautifully directed Shakespearean tragedy and codified commentary on gender politics. The iconic poster image for this film will give you a good idea of its memorable visuals.
