It's fine, I love Billy Wilder, but this had a neat premise that falls apart fairly quickly, stagnates in the middle, and then gets wild at the end. More impressive for how much nicer Shirley MacLaine and Jack Lemmon look 3 years after The Apartment. Could have cut half an hour from this. I liked seeing Paris but didn't really see a social message here. Fav scene: MacLaine with her negligee and the light shining through the window.

When I read that Shirley Maclaine did research for the role by going to hang out with hookers in Paris, I thought this might be a gritty, realistic portrait of the life. Boy, was I wrong! I have an admittedly low tolerance for slapstick, but there's so much here I find the flick almost unwatchable. A totally idiotic story with a matching script.

A charming movie, and while watered down on the comedy side, it is a wonderful love story. This movie is unique and likeable. There are a couple chuckle worthy jokes, but the real meat of it is the one-hundred-percent entertaining plot. It really did deserve that Oscar for best score.

The first third or so is pretty good, but I found Lemmon's masquerade labored and unbelievable.

Maybe a little silly (even though I don't know how a dispretentious comedy can be called silly), but Jack Lemmon makes it worth it.

The lame slapstick and repetition of the same dumb jokes wears thin and gives the viewer time to think about how flimsy the whole setup is. Lemmon's character is a clueless knucklehead, and MacLaine just looks bored. And perhaps I'm taking it too seriously, but the quaint portrayal of prostitution is a bit objectionable. Now don't get me wrong: there are some good moments. There were definitely a few things that brought a smile to my face. The overall experience, however, is a slog.

The positive rating is almost entirely for Jack Lemmon and Lou Jacobi, Lemmon's being a fantastic physical performance as usual, and Jacobi for his understated verbal delivery. The film's studio locale adds a false sheen that actually works for the film's subject matter, but this is definitely lesser Wilder. Lemmon's character, particularly in his transformation from cop to pimp strains credulity, while the overly long run time probably blunts some of the impact of the laughs.

Billy Wilder was a master of creating characters and write a script. He is also an incredible story-writer, but for the second time, after The Seven Year Itch he doesn't use his ability for good. Again, a movie made to cater to the lust of men, unbelievably ridiculous story. Final was surprising, with an incredible line, but pointless and impossible.

"Irma La Douce" is another remarkable pairing of Wilder, Diamond, Lemmon and MacLaine, after the equally good "The Apartment" (1960). This time round, more emphasis is placed on the comedic parts of the story and we are not let down: here you can find some really memorable scenes and characters, such as Lou Jacobi's Moustache. A very good film.

Damn, Shirley is hot in this one. Everything else is no more than decent.

The visuals are beautiful but it's just too plain and silly to be taken seriously. MacLaine is good, but the screenplay is just not.

This clearly is an overly romanticized depiction of the life of Parisian sex-workers. But then this of course never is meant as a gritty realistic inquiry into that, but as entertaining escapism. I wasn't surprised to find out this actually was based on a successful musical of which Wilder took out all song and dance numbers. It's a bit broad, but highly enjoyable as a sweet fun movie with Lemmon and MacLaine doing their thing very well.

The team that made The Apartment followed it up with this overlong, unfunny, totally unbelievable stinker. A major disappointment.

Obviously not anywhere near as good as The Apartment, it's still a fun film. It's a solid film but definitely not a great one.

A colorful, overly elaborate and improbable farce. It's just not as clever as Wilder and Diamond could be. Lemmon carries it, but it's all a little foolish and underwhelming.

Before Julia Roberts was Vivian Ward, Shirley MacLaine was Irma La Douce!

Maybe I just like his noirs better. Couple decent jokes but it should have been funnier than Double Indemnity and it wasn't. What the hell good is a comedy then?

Lovely Lautrec palette with dadaist seasoning, but damn, I just don't care.
