I really didn't find anything in this movie to be lacking. I love Wes Anderson, so maybe that increased my opinion, but the movie is exceptionally animated and the story is thoroughly original and very charming. Some great voice acting and direction boost this above a lot of animated movies I saw this year and last. I found the whole experience to be engaging, cute, funny, and surprisingly heartfelt. A winner for Anderson and for sure worth watching if you haven't seen it yet.

Wes Anderson's aesthetic is choking his stories to death. No wonder for me his best movies are Rushmore, Darjeeling Limited and Moonrise Kingdom. The movies in which his characters and audience alike had time to breath, to be bored for a second and to be, well, ... crooked. Remeber when Bill Murrey is lifting that tent in MK and he can't hold it over his head? That sums up Anderson's dilemma. He is striving for perfection, which he can only find in moments of failure.

Wes Anderson's run of fine form has come crashing down. In Dogs, his idiosyncratic style of hyper-detail and visual artistry is taken to another level - at the expense of character, plot, dialogue and entertainment. A host of talented actors are wasted as bit parts in this hollow concoction of extreme Japanophilia and political allegory. Ultimately the movie has no heart and an unsatisfying and convoluted narrative arc. No amount of cute puppets, hand-crafted animations or montages can fix that.

Wes' stubborn perfectionism is starting to really detract from the heart of his movies for me. "Isle of Dogs" is constructed with a plethora of swift, innovative storytelling devices but rarely allows the dust to settle. It ends up feeling like a whole lot of intricate build-up for a few fleeting moments of sweetness. With such an awesome band of outcast dogs, there should have been more care put on letting them flourish instead of over-designing the world around them.

Didn't exactly rock me to my emotional core as much as I'd hoped, but visually and technically magnificent nonetheless. Being a photography enthusiast, I'm a sucker for well-framed images and harmonious compositions, and I would get a massive hard on every time they would casually slip in the Seven Samurai theme. *bliss*

I'm pretty sure that I've never cracked a laugh, or even an amused smile at any of Anderson's humor, yet he still finds a way to entertain me. As his second stop motion flick, I find myself wondering how exactly he hadn't thought of putting his caricatures in a kid's movie years before. There's something about it that just works better when applied to animals.

I found myself being mostly ambivalent throughout the film. The plot was incredibly predictable and everyone in the film was very one-note. There is a lot of quality filmmaking in this movie, but I'm not of the belief that a good presentation can justify sloppy, uninteresting storytelling. While the presentation makes it feel worthwhile to watch, it's where most of the praise comes from. Slap this script and this plot onto something less well directed and I'm sure you'd see much lower ratings.

A stunning example of Anderson's eye for composition and detail, especially when he makes literal trash beautiful. The character count is so high though that we don't get to know them all like in Anderson's other works, something that's a bit disappointing. The alienating effect of the language choices probably contributes as well. But when we finally get Chief and Akira alone, we start to get some emotion back, and it leads up to a great finale. Just needed more time with the dogs!

Although it gets quite stuffy with its plot and usages of flashbacks, and the human relationships between each other aren't startling, this is most importantly a touching film about the treasured bond between dogs and humans -- and this film is clearly enamored with dogs, as well as Japanese culture, which is beautifully put on screen in this dazzling crafted stop-motion animation that suits Anderson's sharp visual style and pacing sensibilities to a tee.

This marks a drastic step down for me with Anderson. His last three films were literal masterpieces, but Isle of Dogs is crammed with half-threaded plots, gimmicks that wear thin, and unnecessary characters. The worst offender? It's just not as funny as his usual trademark humor. But this doesn't mean it's not worth your time or money. It is. It's a gorgeous and wholly original experience that deserves the ticket price at your nearest theatre, and, despite its problems, it's still pretty great.

The constant spoken Japanese and scant subtitles really put me off. The story also seemed heavy-handed and was probably a metaphor for something. I struggled to enjoy it and found much of the animation to be amateurish or shoddy. The overall story was slightly amusing at times, but it did not really appeal to me that much. I might have enjoyed it more if it were considerably shorter. This is not the first time Wes Andersen has disappointed me.

Well, this was cute. It was pretty much what I expected from a Wes Anderson animated movie. It wasn't quite as funny as I expected - at least, not like The Grand Budapest Hotel, for example. But there were a few good laughs, and some nice emotional beats too. The animation was really cool - it still trips me out that those are real, physical things that they're animating. Great cast, of course. I didn't love it, and I don't think it's among Anderson's finest work, but I enjoyed it.

From the moment you see Chief for the first time you can already tell what's going to happen to his character and how he will develop, and that's just the tip of the iceberg regarding how predictable the story is. Not to mention it's very tonally inconsistent, which I can't get into without spoiling too much of the plot. Still, it's well animated and acted, and is pretty funny and charming.

Better than the Fantastic Mr. Fox, but maybe that's simply because I'm a dog person--this is, after all, a cats vs. dogs movie at its heart. They never do explain though, how Nutmeg (one of the greatest names in cinema history) stays so clean--force of show dog will, I guess.

While the aesthetic of the film was very pleasing, the actually story was sorely lacking. The characters did little to influence the plot, the side characters were completely undeveloped, and most major problems were resolved in an ex machina manner.

Isle of Dogs has all of Wes Anderson's classic tropes, meaning that one's enjoyment of the film is largely based on one's opinion of his previous work. The beautiful animation, heartwarming story, and deadpan humor fire on all cylinders; Anderson's decision to use dogs to optimistically reflect upon human nature is a unique one, but it works incredibly well within his style. It is not his best work, but it does come close to that mark and is a worthy addition to his eclectic filmography.

I liked the level of detail and the drumming but the story and characters never quite grabbed me. It doesn't satisfy as a story about politics, an endorsement of animal rights, or even just as spectacle for dog lovers. This makes it superficially charming and impressive but overall leaves it feeling phony and minor, and to boot it's shot through with bloodless and cute streaks of racism, sexism, and anti-cat sentiment. The exquisitely detailed ISLE OF DOGS is undoubtedly on-brand for Wes Anderson, a whimsical, wistful piece about the nature of friendship. But it tries too hard to please, spreading itself thin on too many subplots and a ridiculously large cast of characters. The film is at its best when emphasizing its simple boy-and-his-dog story; it's tougher to appreciate when undercut by an overstuffed plot and the hints of fetishization that taint an otherwise well-meaning film.

Speaking as someone who's not an Anderson fan, I appreciated the lack of overly stylized performances & this would be my favorite of his. The film also serves to highlight the fascistic extremists on the left: anyone who says it's racist or accuses Anderson of "cultural appropriation"

The animation is beautiful, dogs are wonderful and building a movie around their journey was fantastic, the deadpan humour works really well sometimes (but I didn't find it THAT funny as a whole). It's not as good as Mr. Fox, I won't remember it as much, but it's a charming and well directed. Characters could have used more depth and the plot could have had more to it, but still.

So anyone who has followed my reviews will probably know at least two places I'm going with this. One, this animation and visual style is, in a word, spectacular. Two, God I'm such a sucker for the Japanese aesthetic. And I'm such a sucker for stories of this nature, these simplified "hero's journey" classic tales. Excellent voice cast. This made me smile so very constantly, even if it's not quite as good as a whole as "Fantastic Mr. Fox". If you can find this in theatres, do yourself the favor.

I was fairly charmed by this film. I think there's arguably a few too many characters for a 100-or-so-minute film, as many receive minimal development, but the overall narrative and atmosphere and sense of humor and visual style is wonderfully charming and unique, and the character arc of Chief is simple but satisfying. If I'd seen this film when I was seven or so I bet I'd have enjoyed it not feeling dumbed down for me and its dark edges.

maybe it's cute, but it has some serious unheeded points. firstly, such a rebellion is quite romantic. interruption of a dictator's speech is so unrealistic today. secondly, it is annoying that all dogs want to own a master. chief was reflecting the opposite idea and we saw its change through the film. it's like saying the unwanted groups must always perform the commands of the power. finally, why can only an exchange student see the conspiracy and lead the community? because she's american.

Probably mixes in a little too much Plague Dogs for my liking. Even the coughs upset me. Despite this over sensitivity I didn't think this packed the emotional punches that Fantastic Mr. Fox did. At the very least it wasn't as horrifically creepy as the Island of Misfit Toys from that Rudolph movie.

Just a fantastic cinematographic experience. The use of foreign languages helps you focus on various visual elements, subtle camera tricks give you great satisfaction. Needs multiple watching. It is also good to see that Anderson eased up on his OCD of symmetry, colour and abrupt cuts.

The stop motion is beyond impressive, the voice cast is pitch-perfect, especially Cranston, whom I hope will appear in more Anderson films in the future, and the child-like playfulness mixed with a more adult realism we've come to expect from Anderson is there to behold, but although it is a good movie it has a lot going against it. Alpha Dogs are abandoned too quickly, the human characters and general feel to the environment can be too unpleasant, and it's not up to par with the predecessors.

For me those words mean: -funnier than the overhyped comedies -more heart and sadness than the yearly Oscarbait movies -better directed than 98% of the movies Why?Because Wes Anderson is in the top ten of best working directors right now. Not a bad movie so far and this one, on top of all the other qualities he brings to his movies, has the best stop motion animation I've seen in a very long time.

This was a pretty weak film. The odd choice to have the human casts' lines be untranslated is one thing, but the voice actors aren't even Japanese so their lines are weirdly accented, and that is extremely distracting to someone who studies the language. The worst part about it is how little each character emotes, which is an unfittingly immersion-breaking yet seemingly intentional artistic choice.

A welcome surprise is the engaging hard-boiled political drama added to Anderson's typically quirky comedy (the gossiping goofy alpha dog pack is great).

I loved this. But I also love Wes Anderson; he is my spirit-director. The animation and details in this film is just incredible and show how much research and appreciation he has for Japan. Every part of this is very respectfully done. The story has its charms but it's the trademark Wes Anderson touch that brings the most out of this pretty simple story. The decision to have the human characters speak Japanese is pure genius.

Here the middle third of the film seems a tad hollow with the generic adventure story plotting. That said the voice acting is amazing and the last third is outstanding. Ugly and offensively condescending fable; depicting Japanese culture, people and language as 'charmingly eccentric' character quirks is a wrong headed approach (why the selective translations?) Given his sterling track record, it's tempting to give Anderson the benefit of the doubt that he didn't intend the film to be so thoughtlessly reductive. Otherwise, the flat, inert storytelling (and a voice cast directed to speak as if knocked out by tranquilisers) makes the film almost unwatchable.

Isle of Dogs is a film that lacks neither substance nor style, but is nevertheless a film I ultimately found lacking. Anderson's usual brand of surreal quirkiness is present throughout. The animation, with its meticulousness, is gorgeous. The dialogue, however, felt off and hampered my enjoyment. It follows Anderson's usual parttern of speedy verbosity paired with long awkward silences, but where I found it witty at the beginning, as the film progresses it seemed to becoming off-puttingly inane.

And because Isle of Dogs, this movie hit me with moments of both joy and sadness that may be missed by non dog owner viewers as I recognized so much of the psychology and characteristics of the wonderful cast of dogs in my own critters. There is however one major choice made by a dog that was a human choice rather than a canine one which did bother me. That said, I love dogs is an exceptionally animated and typically whimsical WA movie worthy of a puppy snap!

I guess I should appreciate that Anderson made a movie about dogs that doesn't feel emotionally manipulative like all other movies about dogs (and it's easy manipulating for this dog-lover). But the whole thing feels sort of cold to me. I wish I appreciated Anderson as much as I did when I first discovered him in the late 90s/early aughts...

His weakest, strangest film by far. Anderson goes further down into his own lost worlds and doesn't seem to care who comes along for the ride. Results are mixed. The intricate, beautiful scenery is well worth the ticket. The rehashed story and ironic armor suitable for an ironclad less so. Note that the framing of a film like The Darjeeling Limited makes its racial statements more palatable, whereas here, without apparent self-awareness, the film flounders.

Anderson approaches a hero's journey fable with his characteristically self-aware, bourgeois intellectualism - Kikuchiyo's Mambo is a major musical cue - so as always, if you're not with Wes you won't be with Wes. By that measure it's unapologetic. While also unrelentingly good natured.

Doesn’t quite have the emotional weight of Anderson at his very best. But this is gorgeously detailed, beautifully voiced and as comfortingly whimsical as a Wes Anderson fan like myself could hope for. It’s minor Anderson in my opinion, but still better than most could ever wish to achieve.

I don't want to describe this film as quirky, though it is, and I don't want to give it the weight of expectation that the label unique places upon it, because it isn't. It is pleasant to watch because it's different, eccentric, idiosyncratic, and it is quite a sweet story, with some comedy, and a story that seems to have layers of meaning. I liked Fantastic Mr Fox, and although this does meander more than that (to its detriment), it was still entertaining throughout.

This film has great visuals and a top notch voice cast. Some of the choices made by Wes Anderson don't work in this movie. There are a lot of humans that speak with no subtitles which takes away from the story. Overall I would recommend this film.

The animation style is unique and visually impressive, though the constantly shifting fur was distracting. This plot is also (mostly) unique, albeit bizarrely violent. I also have to complain about the subtitles - they went by WAY TOO FAST, and I'm someone who is quite used to watching subtitled anime. But it's otherwise a well-made film...just not for me.

You've come to expect it but nevertheless every single shot in this movie is doing something visually stunning.Anderson always puts together an all-star cast even though some don't get enough screen-time the ones that do get it really shine.That being said a common complaint about his movies is that they sometimes are style over substance and this film does suffer from that.I found myself also drifting of at times due to Anderson's weird choice of not adding subtitles when needed.

Yet another gem by Wes Anderson. Aside from the praise of his amazing visions, the movie has a great and engaging plot, good pace and adorable characters. I will admit, "Isle of Dogs" somehow can't deliver a strong emotional charge, but nonetheless it is worth a watch by all accounts. Everything that was written in English felt like little Easter eggs, which I found amusing.

One word. The Richness. This movie is one of the richest and most versatile piece of art ı've ever seen. I already loved Anderson's Mr. Fantastic Fox but this is even better. Political allegories, ethnic discriminatıon allegory, corroption of human soul against power and man made superstitious beliefs. Theme and plot predictable but the variety of different characters and very smart allegories covers that. And visually ? My one of the smartest cinematography. Only problem is Japan-US stuff.

Unfortunately, the narrative takes all the easy ways out in the third act, sapping the movie of some of its magic and breaking the spell. Anderson's second foray into stop motion really snuck up on me. While it isn't as laugh out loud as some of his other films, but definitely enjoys his typical quirks, the work becomes increasingly poignant and touching. The political undertones are blatant but it is the personal desire to change that is most hopeful. Obviously the visuals are gorgeous, but they serve as pretty paper over a really beautiful story.

A movie of enchanting beauty, warmth, and wit. On par with Fantastic Mr Fox, and in some ways better. Within every frame, there’s the sense that one is watching a master at work. The pace of the narrative seems to be accelerated from the very opening, which pleads for you to watch it again. Characterization of the supporting cast is minimal, but find me a Wes Anderson character with a more dynamic arc than Chief, honestly. Cranston, Swinton, and Goldblum steal the show. Great film

Just bad. Didn't care about the visuals, which seems to be the only thing everybody talks about, and the script was terribly weak. Even its main conceit, with the dogs speaking a different language from the humans, doesn't work out. Wes Anderson used to make meaningful movies, but it seems he has learned that whimsical alone sells enough tickets. Pity.
