Fourteen-year-old Lila is experiencing an ennui-filled Brooklyn summer. Painful and heartwrenching and completely honest. It moves too slowly, but Hittman's visual direction is stunning.

Ennui and angst well portrayed and suitably excruciating. The fact that it's empty of all except desire and is trapped in an unfulfillable cycle of need makes is unpleasant but effective.

A fairly accurate and restrained portrayal of early sexual awakening with all the awkwardness, frustrations, and vulnerabilities that it entails. Really liked the tone, visual confidence and the female-centricness but I just wish there was more to Lila. She seemed to be completely defined by her predicament so much so that she didn't quite feel well-rounded enough as a character, thus, curbing the impact the film might have had.

sundance breillat. clichés abound, and the more it tries to seem opaque the more obvious it becomes. barely a believable exchange in the whole thing, and the lead is amorphous and one-note way beyond the point where it can be justified as serving a thematic purpose.

A gorgeous young girl is basically the biggest highlight of this movie, but sadly the story is poorly told. Slow and plodding, it continually struggles to find any kind of voice. Too much of the screen time is filled with vacant stares and emotionless performances. And to add insult to injury they top it off with the worst kind of raunchy rap music. Amateur writing and directing.

Getting wavvy (Thematically, the tropes of this are nothing new at all, but as a rejoinder/corrective to both Larry Clark and Catherine Breillat this is sort of amazing. Also, aesthetically it's again nothing unique but kind of perfect at the same time. The best of it's very specific kind since Fish Tank.)
