The quirky surburban setting and electronic score gave the film a vaguely timeless but retro feel, similarly the young cast's dress and demeanour didn't signify any time or place. I liked the lead, who had a Chloe Sevigny thing going on. The cinematography was a step above the normal modern horror, and all the elements combined to elicit an undercurrent of mild dread throughout the film. Many of the themes and influences were familiar, but this still felt fresh. Creepily enjoyable.

*Walks on the stage. Picks up the mike* So, give up a warm hand, uh, that was Captain Obvious, who rightly stated that this was, in fact, not the scariest movie ever made, even though we were promised so by Guillermo/Raimi/Carpenter quotes in the trailer. Still, there is something deliciously eerie about the simple premise. It doesn't *snickers* FUCK around, mehehe *microphone whine*. Getit? The very definition of a RottenTomatoes red herring, everybody says yes to seeing it, and in herd mentality, I agree. See it. But before we fall over each other trying to pass the curse to this movie, this is Babadook territory: critics who hate horror movies love this. I love horror movies and feel the disconnect. Side story: my wife and I are Mayberry style only ever lovers. She expressed interest in maybe marriedly exploring other things. My response was, "STDs." Her tune changed. It Follows

A perverse ode to the passing of youthful innocence, with the naturalistic romanticism of Only the Young & dreamy nostalgia of Adventureland, but with the looming threat of adulthood literalized in the form of a bogey for the ages, a shifting representation that stands in all at once for changing relationships, sexual danger, & time's inexorable forward march. Like the best new retro horror, it transforms its referents -- Cronenberg, Carpenter, Body Snatchers -- into something novel & great.

Refreshing and haunting. A horror where the antagonist is something we haven't seen before. Where sex scenes are character moments that advance the plot. Where that paralyzing nightmare feeling of being chased by something unknown and unstoppable is tangible for once. Where you're nervously scouring the edges of every frame looking for That Which Follows. The pool scene didn't work for me, but the rest was solid, nerve-wracking stuff.

There is such a creepy, atemporal haze here -- some sort of late 80s Craven combined with Carpenter's slow-burning shots and synth soundtrack, which makes every scene incredibly absorbing. It's a beauty how Mitchell turns a STD teen horror piece into a lot of things that just don't seem derivative -- there are no actual adult characters, what creates such a horny and dangerous ambient, and Detroit is divided between suburbs (safety) and the city (full of dirty old houses and abandoned stores).

There is a scene where a bunch of people are scrambling to get into a car while the main character is simply looking off camera at something we, the viewers, cannot see...and it is abso-fucking-lutely terrifying. I fucking loved everything about this. The retro feel, the brilliant soundtrack, the gorgeous cinematography and light, and even the awkward performances made this film feel fresh yet somewhat familiar. It doesn't try to redefine the genre, but rather take what works from classic horror films and then adapt them in a way that is contemporary in its sensibility. This isn't the scariest or most shocking horror film that I've seen in a while, but it is certainly the most clever.

Somehow manages to create a suffocating sense of dread despite having a subtle teenage Scooby-Doo quality to it all. And even though it's retro as hell and heavily influenced by other vintage horror directors (Carpenter, Polanski, Romero), and even though this vintage look is making a comeback (Ti West, Adam Wingard), It Follows feels like something new and uncanny. I left the theater watching my back the rest of the night. It's like a bad dream. Notes:1)Detroit is a great setting. 2)Cool music.

Some great digital cinematography and a great digital soundtrack provide a genuinely tense atmosphere that complements one of the creepiest movie monsters in a while. In the end it could have indulged in a bit more of the fun its influences were known for (or at least opted for a real ending), but it's hard to criticize a horror movie that works this well as both a scary story and an allegorical tale.

What do you know, a quality horror movie! The brilliantly simple premise is effectively creepy, but I wish the bland youngsters had some depth to them (so that I could invest in their survival) or were more obnoxious (then I could root for the antagonist). Gioulakis's cinematography, the Disasterpeace score and Mitchell's sense of style and genre add up to a quite stirring package, and there are several seriously intense sequences. It, of course, follows that sequels are inevitable. Count me in.

You see, this is how horrors movies need to be nowadays. It Follows obviously isn't for every horror movie film goer, but the soundtrack helps make it more spine-tingling and creepy as well the as the solid direction. Some really decent shots are in there and while some actors stand above others, the movie is overall and creepy and way better than most horror movies in the past 5 or so years. May not sit well if you have paranoia... I really liked it. Worth a viewing.

As a desensitized horror buff I had quietly resigned to the idea that I'm just never again going to feel scared watching a horror movie the way I did as delicate fourteen-year-old catching glimpses of "A Nightmare on Elm Street" through my fingers. Then "It Follows" came along and proved me wrong. It feels like a nightmare in the most literal sense, and it absolutely nails that terrifying, yet dreamy atmosphere. This film is a goddamn gift. "I Got It From Agnes": The Movie. But seriously, so very simple and so very efficient. The central metaphor looks clumsy at first, but it's used to touch off all sorts of big and little fears. Just the little trick the movie has of stepping back, cutting to someone else who doesn't see it and making us crane our necks for it, the shuttered homes, the dead trees, the agelessness and missing explanations, the lingering trauma...

Clearly, this is the director's endearing love letter to 80's horror. It's apparent in visuals, feel, and sound. While this might not be the first to emulate 80's, it's definitely one of the best. "It Follows" is tense, scary, and somewhat original, it doesn't feel like the idea is gimmicky. Don't watch it if you like answers in your supernatural horror, but otherwise, this'll deliver.

The sort of film your arty Dad might make rather than just tell you about sexual disease. IF is beautifully and inventively filmed, with a great soundtrack and attempts to make a horror out of other peoples sexual partners always following you around... but is acted by kids seemingly picked out of a school play, is not at all frightening, and the script cannot sustain the metaphor over the course of the film. If you want to see a film that doesn't know how to end, this is it.

"It" is a great new horror movie villain, a literalization of the always-walking, always-stalking horror menace. The movie around "It" mostly, if not entirely, lives up to the creature. It gets a little too nutty (borderline-comedic, really) with the pool sequence at the end. But it does a good job making the viewer paranoid along with the characters, and I liked the weird, scary musical score.

An 80s slasher by way of Sofia Coppola and Charles Burns' Black Hole. David Robert Mitchell has portraits of adolescent suburbia on lockdown, giving us a conception of 1980s Michigan that feels less like a throwback than a hyperreal pastiche, simultaneously timeless and out-of-time. Very few straight horror films are ever as beautifully shot as this one. The score is absolutely (ahem) killer.

What follows, it turns out, is an intersection of at least partially instrumentalising coupledom and efforts to efface mortality utterly doomed to fail. Adulthood. Contemporary US teens negotiate more than simply what each other did last summer, incl nominal boundaries between the romantic and predatory, chivalry and opportunism. Yes, it is THE RING if danger is communicated sexually instead of by video; those who dislike the conclusion don't know what makes a good ending. I found it beautiful.

The acting is wooden at times, but I love the excellent soundtrack by Disasterpeace, which makes it feel retro and creep. I also love that the movie is different than most others. The pool scene fell a little flat. It had great cinematography and maintained a sense of dread throughout, but it wasn't cripplingly so... which is a problem 'cuz I think the premise might be better than the execution. Shoulda been scarier.

It Follows is one of the most pleasing Horror films in recent years and it's worthy of recognition. What's most satisfying about this film is that it remarkably feels both refreshing and nostalgic. And without the over reliance of violence or jump scares, this is one of the few Horror films that is haunting because of the atmosphere it creates and the suspense that mounts. The cinematography, editing, lighting and score are all stellar and Maika Monroe gives an impressive leading performance.

While Mitchell wears his influences on his sleeves, this chiller is a far cry from being derivative. In avoiding cheap scares and the cliches of less inspired coming-of-age dramas, It Follows manages to tap into some truly primal fears about intimacy and aging. Really, it's one of the most effective and original horror films in years. The visuals and sound effects are just phenomenal. All that being said, however, the ending is atrocious.

I must say, this really hit the nail on the head. While the acting is subpar, that's really my only gripe. Being beautiful, I'm sure it doesn't take a demonic STD for someone to follow Maika Monroe around. This movie is pretty strange. An evil force will non-stop follow you, unless you...um... pass it on to another person. It's not as gross as it sounds, but it is deadly for sure. I thought this concept was pretty fun. Enjoyable retro stylised horror movie that invokes John Carpenter & other late 70s early 80s genre directors to lightly analyse the format while also reveling in it. Very deliberately mannered & observantly written. Works nicely on many levels although doesn't truly excel on any of them. A story of teenage sexual awakening & the awkward identity crises that follow. An unpacking of specific horror mechanics. A cleverly paced cinematic freak-out. A brilliant original horror film. A strange, yet familiar, portrait of suburbia. The film is a pastiche of its influences (from Lynch to Halloween), and the cinematography is shot in a self-assured manner that creates a haunting atmosphere. Among other things, the film is also a subtle view of a post-GM Detroit, and all its income disparity.

I would argue that this thing takes about a half-hour to get going. But once it does, it does a really good job of setting up its tense moments, and it has a good sense of atmosphere throughout. There's a lot of downtime in that first half-hour and the script & justifications aren't particularly good. But there is an undeniable air of "shit is way scarier when it just walks towards you slowly than when it jumps out at you", and that's far more effective horror to me. This is worth checking out!

The entry into sexuality as both the awakening of the knowledge of mortality and the beginning of attempts to flee that knowledge. Also, struggling with the Oedipus complex as the road to adulthood, even if the struggle never ends, indeed, must never end. In short, consideration of the PROBLEM of horror greatly exceeds the banality of most efforts in this genre. In addition, nicely photographed, with some effective use of camera techniques. Horror done well is rare. Meaningful horror done well even less so. Mitchell provides just enough detail to create a compelling film, but leaves "It" broad enough to cover a multitude of issues/sins. There does seem a pretty clear move away from innocence and toward guilt in the main character, something that gets progressively weightier as the film--and her attempts to "correct" the problem--continues. Like most modern horror there's the obligatory "heroine freaks out during an all-too precinct monologue from a teacher" bit and '80s obsession. It Follows isn't perfect. Some of the acting is spotty, the teens still, at times, act stupid, and if you're not a fan of slow-moving movies, the glacial pace at which it proceeds will not entice you. But the way it builds both atmosphere and tension, with the addition of a creepy villain, allows it to be relatively scary. Jay seems lifted from Mitchell's Myth of the American Sleepover which, in a movie underpinned by the establishment of an emotional connection with the protagonist, undermines the stakes. The result is a mediocre movie with a few good jump scares but ultimately unfulfilling.

Like the best films, this one comments on other films, with its John Carpenter-esque score and use of scènes à faire (e.g. the parking garage, the pool, the secluded cabin, teens having sex in a car, the symbol of Jamie's bedroom as a sanctuary). The film takes the central element of horror in film--the fear of the unknown--and exploits that idea to its fullest, fully driving home its metaphors about anxiety, STDs, unrequited love, coping with mortality, and the long-term damage of sexual as

The element aggravating the horror-factor is that there is no possible way of hiding, It doesn't take a rest. No creepy music needed to prove their point, danger is always on its way. Even though It's slow, you will bust yourself time and time again tracing the background for any movement. And no one else sees it so public place or not, it's going to strike anywhere, any time, any place. https://cinemuckblog.wordpress.com/2015/05/11/it-follows-2014/

Very good example of building a creepy and unsettling atmosphere subtly, without resorting to cheap tricks. Can't really say the same about the climax, but for the most part the atmosphere makes it work.

Very pretty, nice soundtrack, creepy mood, but it's fairly unsatisfying in the end. I guess it's still a blessing that we didn't get the traditional over-the-top horror ending, either.

Obligatory compliment to the soundtrack. It Follows does a great job of casting you into a nightmare world of timelessness (straddling the 70's till today), lack of adults and an internal logic that falls apart if looked at rationally. First two-thirds is fantastic when everyone is helpless, the scene where It silently enters a room right behind someone else is a highlight. Then when people starts 'interacting' with it at the beach and pool the film becomes somewhat silly.

Writer-director David Robert Mitchell has clearly studied up on John Carpenter. But Mitchell has his own twisted gift for letting atmosphere help define character. It Follows creeps you out big-time.

It's a very good concept as it simplifies the nightmarish notion of being followed by a deadly force, but I think the terror out of this wasn't utilised very well as the film relies on cliched-looking monsters that made this film resemble the usual collection of teen horror films that don't scare or impress me. Despite some nice cinematography and a pretty cool soundtrack and sound design, too many dumb moments and boring characterisation brought this one down.

Interesting STD allegory where the only way to get cured is to infect someone else, but even then you'll forever live in fear of a relapse. I really like the way this concentrates on establishing a menacing atmosphere and gives the characters enough humanity to make them worth caring about, even if they're still less developed than I'd like. It makes the scariest moments have a genuine tension and makes the moments of violence that much more effective.

Solid entry with a great soundtrack. The leads can be a little wooden and sometimes the shots seem a little artsy forced, but it isn't a jump cut blood fest, relying instead on what is clearly visible to be frightening.

In some archaic cultures there is a tradition according to which the virginity of young women are taken by someone like a wizard or a witchdoctor because they believe that there exists a daemonic spirit which is let free by the loss of virginity, and only after that could a woman enjoy a sexual relation with a man. Hence, that action resembling the creation of sacred objects through sacrifice, creates an evil as a "great other" which becomes the origin of her sexuality with Paul.

I would say this is a classic horror movie, but it isn't. This is a very unique film, with a talented cast, and very appropriate soundtrack. A very good horror movie.

The direction/execution is adequately atmospheric, but besides the very original premise (OMG STDs!), this plays quite by the numbers.

This feels like an 80s horror flick. The soundtrack is amazing and the stereotypes typical of the genre are not bloated throughout. There are a few places in the movie where it just barely starts to feel slow but Mitchell appears to have done this on purpose to create tension. Well done. I look forward to more of his work.

Premise is utterly creepy, thinking about that scenario is where the horror ended for me though. Few contrived plot devices and in the end it all falls pretty flat. Do like no adults exist either?

This feels like Stephen King meets Lady Bird. The humor has a sly sense to it that I think a teenager can get, or an adult who now understands what it is like to come of age and to take responsibility for your actions. And the horror is super cool too, especially as it avoids torturing a young woman so the filmmaker can say the character is "strong". Here, the gender politics do a great job of avoiding slut shaming and instead show you someone grappling with their choices. Highly recommended.

The score is like Drive mixed with Predator or something--very cool. It's a really nice idea and the atmosphere is wonderfully crafted. Its downfall is poor acting by all but the lead.
