Fun fact: "fleck" and "boden" mean "stain" and "floor" in german. Which describes this quite accurately. Typical life-affirmation crap masquerading as something of value and depth. A kid who initially plotted to off himself checks into a mental hospital, where he meets the girl of his dreams, realizes his true calling and helps the long term inmates solve their problems. Yup, that's how we roll at the psych ward. Woopdeefuckingdoo.

I really enjoyed it, but I can see why some people might not. It's a story of a kid who is battling "depression" (it's more like being stressed out and not knowing how to deal with it instead of a chemical imbalance). I think people get thrown off by the title and the inclusion of Galifianakis and expect this to be a comedy. It does have funny parts, but it's really a drama. It's nice to see the immensely talented Galifianakis get a role with depth and nail it. He is not a one note actor.

It is. Fleck and Boden can't decide if they're semi-serious but the humour works, thanks in no small way to Galifianakis. He's the real deal. Gilchrist and Roberts are just fine as well and there are some seriously funny lines and gags.

The freeze frame narration thing drove me crazy. It's been an overused technique ever since Guy Richie started doing it. But ignore that. Just think about *why* it exists. It's commonly a tool to make the audience hyper-aware of the narrator. The narrator can literally stop time and give us additional information. What additional information do we get here? Virtually None. Remember the scene where he throws up? We get freeze frame narration afterwards telling us that sometimes he throws up.

An unlikely misstep from Boden and Fleck, this film lacks both the dynamic sensibility and emotional heft of their previous efforts. It is buoyed in parts via Galifianakis and the light tone however the overall story of the protagonist is completely inconsequential and forgettable.

Another feelgood mental illness movie that treads a fine line between being genuine and corny. The character arcs all lack originality, the script and performances are just so-so, and the subplots are the stuff of soap operas. Plenty to make it a forgettable film. However, the ensemble cast and some light artistic touches contribute to a benign Cuckoo's Nest atmosphere which makes the film hard to truly hate. It makes light work of heavy issues, but is that its defect, or its secret power?

We're back in GIRL INTERRUPTED territory here - like its forebears, it is frustratingly light-weight and inconsistent in regards to its considerations of mental illness, trivialising it for a cheap laugh or some spicy drama; the specificity of its characters and performances help (the psych sessions between Davis and Gilchrist are highlights) and Gilchrist and Roberts make for a cute, charming couple, despite the unconvincing contrivances involving Kravitz to throw their relationship off course.

It's Kind of a Funny Story is a rather unassuming film that meanders around the theme of the silent (and not so silent) judgements we encounter and deal out. I would describe the film as less of a coming-of-age tale and more a teen romance story. Mandvi and Davis were underused, Galifianakis delivers a strong performance, and I'm on the fence with Gilchrist. The film is mild entertainment but not much more profound that that, too often resorting to clichéd dialogue.

It's kind of difficult to not see through the feel-good bullshit knowing the film's author, Ned Vizzini, offed himself a few years after this autobiographical film was released. It's also difficult to look past the fact that he directly lifted much of his material from psych-ward author, Jim Knipfel. It's not a terrible film. I enjoy these coming-of-age dark comedies about suicidal teens more than most, but this one may be just a bit too saccharine and dishonest, particularly in its resolution.

It's true, it is...kind of funny. That's about it, though. So much about it is asinine and forgettable, especially the cringe-worthy attempts to represent this kid's inner life, most of which end up giving the impression that he doesn't have one. But at least he has a bunch of quirky, fun-loving crazy people to help him self-actualise, realise he's amazing at everything, and learn the lesson that checking yourself into a mental institution will result in Emma Roberts wanting to fuck you.

Funny, it is not. It's a flat out teenage drama about those clinically depressed. The narration was completely unnecessary, it rubbed me the wrong way. There's lots of TALK about Emma Robert's character Noelle, but only very few worthwhile moments with her actual self; not enough to make me even remotely interested in her story. I didn't hate it, it's still watchable, but the story's too superficial to be loved.

It made quite an impression on me the first time I watched and I occasionally started wondering if it was my life situation that made it so. After a second watch I still admire the way it showcases its sweet-natured exploration into teens mental health, how someone who's got so much going for him still can experience depression because of the negative stress of too high expectations. Unfortunately Gilchrist doesn't entirely live up to the expectations the movie needs him to deliver.

I'm a sucker for watching movies set inside Psych Wards. This movie does have a pretty slow start. I frankly wasn't impressed for most of the film. Then the pieces started fitting together and I really started enjoying this. I would definitely say that this is Galifianakis' best acting so far. This movie also has some other big actors like Viola Davis, Zoe Kravitz and Emma Roberts. There was a very unique visual style to the movie that added an artsy feel to it all.

I was concerned about this film at first, as I really enjoyed the book a lot. However, despite the changes, this film really pulls its weight, and is changed for the better in some ways. However, the film rushes into Craig's depression without much explanation and makes him look like a spoilt whiny brat just after some pills. I had mixed feelings about the Under Pressure scene at first, but now I enjoy it more and more each time I watch the film.

I am surprised at how much I liked this movie. It is full of odd ball characters, but somehow a lot of wisdom slips between the cracks of the story. It is heartwarming and sweet, all while being masked behind a teen in crisis. Even Zach Galifianakis is not so annoying. Basically, this is a weirdly wonderful movie that keeps your attention and does not fail to be entertaining and engaging. And in the end has a great message.

I might be a little biased in liking this story. But it's only because life is objectively pointless. Which implies that everything that we're concerned or worry about is not worth being concerned about. And it can be a little confusing when neither of those things feel true. And it's not funny. Unless you think awkwardness and tragedy are funny, and they kind of are.

Bobby (Galifianakis) is the heart of the film, lending a real weight to the otherwise airy proceedings. I'm tempted to fault the film for its too-light treatment of mental illness, but as a first-person narrative of a sixteen year old who is most definitely not mentally ill and therefore stands outside those on the mental ward, the film works. The lightness comes because the protagonist sees the world lightly, while Bobby stands as a dark beacon to the more sinister impulses of humanity.

Had It's Kind of a Funny Story actually treated its subject, mental illness, with respect, it probably would have been an okay watch. Still not great, because the story was so simple and the ending -- not only in the openness, but also in how quick it wraps everything up -- was poorly done. But I couldn't get over how simple mental illness was depicted. The cast is still good, but if you decide to watch it, don't expect an uplifting comedy -- it isn't one.

Once you get it out of your heads that a movie with Zach-G has to be a comedy, and stop being disappointed by the fact that this movie is not trying to be a comedy despite the title, I think your rankings would raise. There ARE some funny parts in there that attempt to save the comedy-philes ("She try and make sex in my bed!"). And typically, dramedies try to push more comedy than drama. It's nice to see things from the other side. So, I'm not with you guys on this one. This movie was excellent.

Not quite the zany comedy you'd expect, there's a halfway decent story in here with most of the pedantic story's failings offset but just how optimistic it all is. Still, the cast is better that the script and the story seems to lose its way, engaging in a bit too much plot padding via Roberts and Galifianakis.

....came in well under the radar, mostly because the trailers don't represent it well at all. It isn't a Nurse Ratchet, I-don't-belong-here, get in but can't get out situation. The shrink is really good, and the other patients are as much a part of the therapy (and the story) as the staff. It's the way a psych ward is supposed to work. Zach Galifianakis is his usual great self, providing much of the humor as well as the drama. Only neg, the projectile vomiting.
