Disappointing. I'm not sure what bothered me more, the wooden acting, the atrociously-choreographed fight scenes, or the blatant historical inaccuracies. (I understand the movie followed Scott's book closely, but even so it still diminishes the film if it played fast and loose with history.) Only Joan Fontaine and Elizabeth Taylor keep this film tolerable, but it was too far gone for them to fully rescue.

Espléndida cinta de aventuras con todo el lujo de la Metro Goldwyn Mayer a comienzos de los 50.Destaca una Elizabeth Taylor en el apogeo de su irrepetible belleza.

The technicolour is attractive and the story has interesting bits, but it is all rather tedious to get through. There are lots of rousing speeches and some action scenes, but it all feels stagey, and not in a good way.

Great costumes. Taylor is beautiful and passionate, and the jousting is real cool. It's a pity Robert Taylor and Joan Fontaine are so wooden. This might have been a first class adventure film.

Simplified, but faithful to the 1819 novel. The fighting is unrealistic, but the complex story holds the attention.

Overdone sets, crappy accents, a plot that baffles children and bores adults, stinker

Fairly traditional representation of the Scott novel. A little too many banners and flags for many people's taste. A motley group of soldiers are set loose on swinging England in an initiative test to collect a selection of esoteric items. Very much of its time, Taylor underplays her role (for once) with strong supporting cast. Ok for a wet Sunday.

I bet the book is a great read but this is dry as hell. It treads between swashbuckler and epic drama yet doesn't contain the emotional thrill of either.

Doesn't always capture the full spirit of this Robin Hood-like story of Ivanhoe (1952), but there was more than enough adventure for a entertaining Anglo-Saxon clash. In full Technicolor where Elizabeth Taylor & Joan Fontaine dazzle, and a 40-year-old Robert Taylor ends up a axe slugging hero. For me it was certainly a film that gradually grew, but struggled to hit that peak. Ivanhoe (1952) still ticked most of the boxes for me as a fine swashbuckler type movie.
