We begin in 1865, when the Shogunate is on its last legs, but still capable of punishing its enemies. One is Izo (Kazuya Nakayama), an assassin in the service of Hanpeida (Ryosuke Miki), a Tosa lord and Imperial supporter. After killing dozens of the Shogun's men, Izo is captured and crucified. Instead of being extinguished, his rage propels him through the space-time continuum to present-day Tokyo (imdb)

A 70. Unless you like mind-boggling strangeness and ludicrous violence. Then, probably an 85.

Only Takashi Miike could make a psychedelic samurai movie. It may leave your head spinning, but Izo is visceral and rewarding for those who can survive until the ending.

He kills so many people i literally got bored with him killing people. I think that was the point. DEEP. I admire this film-making.

Well, this was pretty fucked up. The body count is humongous. It's definitely got a Jodorowski flavor to it, very anarchic and loaded with nonsensical mysticism. Although the film goes on too long and is too open to interpretation to be meaningful, it's mostly fascinating with a sly sense of humor and some captivating images.

Endless killing with enough symbolism to make your head spin. Yes, a delight for the senses and brain. The main actor is actually a little bit crazy and has assaulted people which is one reason why he was chosen for this role (this is true). I believe this movie is mainly about the violent nature of man, lots to think about here, and a damn good ride. There's something for everyone, if you don't like to think, enjoy the non-stop action, it you do like to think, enjoy the non-stop thinking.

I don't think I was drunk enough to appreciate this (nor to understand it). What it was to me was a confusing assault on the senses which I wanted to end. Miike is just something else.

Repetitive, pseudo philosophic and some of the special effects are really bad. But I like this movie. The nihilistic undertone, carried by the acid folk soundtrack and the bleak, yet interesting scenery just makes a great atmosphere.

Quite possibly one of Takashi Miikes most interesting and bloody films. The plot is indescribable. The action blows everything in America right out of the water. One thing is for sure if there have ever been any milestones set in film on the amount of people killed in one movie this movie must shatter it. The story is downright enthralling, the acting of Beat Takeshi alone makes this a must see. This movie is an adrenaline ride that will most likely make peoples pacemakers run out of juice.

A tad too experimental for my taste, but generally a watchable film.

Miike overreaches with this high-concept film but the result is still watchable. The pacing is horribly set, making the film feel awfully longer then it really is. Experimental elements liven the film but many scenes feel misplaced or pointless. Great music, especially by on-screen guitarist Kazuki Tomokawa, help immensely. The script seems overly complex but Miike's stylistic approach is heartening enough to garner a watch, especially if you more-then-stomach is previous works, like Gozu.

This gets 20 points for the music of the great Kazuki Tomokawa. 10 points for all the big name cameos. The rest of this movie is pretty much shit.

Dull Miike opus thankfully eases up on the usual provocative sex and violence which colors his films (though there is still some potent imagery here), but this time his pacing is too slack and slowly paced; combined with a pensive, puzzling and ultimately incoherent narrative ultimately bogs the film down and creates a pretty dreary experience. However, certain sections work well in isolation, and there is some stunning usage of evocative imagery, especially when nature plays a part.

One of the most violent movies I've seen, but what to expect, since Izo travels with a razor-sharp sword an takes no prisoners. Dark, moody, dirty, surreal with great sound and music, cinema revenge at its finest. Beautiful ending.

Legendarily bad. I really wonder whether I should give this 99 or 0. It's a torture to watch for sure but it's also impossible to switch off.

Grotesque slasher mix, overcomplicated. Lots of the scenes are dull and sloppy. Feels like brilliancy mixes with idiotic ideas too many times.
