Tom Cruise is miscast as Batman in this middle-of-the-road investigative drama that secretly wants to be a thriller and kinda-sorta turns into one in the final act. The problem with bad post-2000 movies is that they haven't been around long enough to evoke any sort of retro-charm. Or maybe they never will. Maybe the average 2010's film aesthetic sucks too much.

Rewatched. They should have called this one Lil Jack Reacher. Total 80s throwback but well made and plenty of fun without being overblown. Pike has never been hotter, Duvall is great as always, and nobody does Herzog like Werner. And I've never read the book so as far as I'm concerned, Tom Cruise IS Jack Reacher...Lil Jack Reacher.

This could have been a decent neo-noir with Lee Marvin circa 1965, when shots could last longer than 30 seconds, thrillers were a tight 90 minutes and stern loners didn't speak in mortifying paragraph-length screenwriter porn. As it is, 'Jack Reacher' struggles to remain even competent during its runtime (see for instance a chase scene that's 90% windshield or a final shootout with enough continuity issues that even I noticed), and not even Duvall and Herzog's unexpected appearances can save it.
