For something called "a modern day fairy tale" you'd think there would be some kind of spin on the story in some way. But this shows again that outside of the X-Men films, Bryan Singer has some real difficulty in building and creating nuanced fanboy worlds. However here, he doesn't have something like a Richard Donner version of a Superman film to use as a template. I could see it being okay for younger kids, assuming they've exhausted watching The Princess Bride. But everyone else should avoid.

An expensive-looking but soulless and mechanical piece of generic blockbustery entertainment. Vaguely better than Alice in Wonderland, but not nearly as good as The Hobbit, a billion times less The Lord of the Rings (and the comparison is fair, because this movie has a Macguffin relic that's pretty much identical to the One Ring and climaxes with a poor man's Siege of Gondor).

Another fairy tale movie that didn't ask to be made and didn't need to be made. Am I the only person who finds something deeply unsettling about the shape of Hoult's head?

Totally formulaic and sometimes over the top, a sometimes unreasonable story too. Also some cheesy lines. That being said, Jack the Giant Slayer is an entertaining fairly tale. The acting was impressive at times to. It's does beat recent fairly tale remakes (Hansel and Gretel Witch Hunters at the least.

Tries to be a film for both children and adults (especially during the action scenes, while there's no blood there's still ample gore) but fails miserably. the casting is great but the performances are a bit stale and the directing is quite bad, riddled with relying on outdated tropes.
