A 'buddy road trip' film but as ethnofiction, or more specifically ethnocomedy. My understanding is that Rouch, Dia, Gaoudel and Zika shot this footage sometime in 1954 and then returned to it in 1957 to create the commentary, with the film not completed and released until 1967. Despite, or perhaps because of, this drawn out and fragmented approach to film making, this makes for a unique viewing experience that is both informative and hilarious. Proper subversive cinema.
