Taking its title from the Japanese symbol of the rising sun, Reygadas unapologetically uses widescreen cinema, the most lush of formats, as a backdrop for exploring thorny issues of life and death. (Film Forum)

extraordinary, vivid, realistic depiction of an isolated man's return to humanity via a trip down to an old Mexican village still steeped in the slow, old-world virtues of the past. great filmmaker.

Japão estreava há 20 anos no Festival de Roterddam. Por amar tanto Luz Silenciosa e sua aproximação com Dreyer me fez não equiparar meu deslumbre com o filme de 2007, em todo caso ainda é um grande filme. DVDRip no MakingOff.

Excruciating. A sense of connection with the main character is established a good way in as suicide seems preferable over having to finish this crap. Reminds me of the metaphoric masturbation of Pasolini's late work.

I adore Reygadas' naturalist approach, his narrative here unfolds, pauses and reflects with organic sleight of hand guiding it along. A deep sense of unity and truth is achieved despite all of the strange, sometimes grotesque detours and impulsive moments. A uniquely tranquil, symbolic experience.

Tedious and deliriously beautiful, though unfortunately not in equal measure. The first act is pretty compellingly weird, but it promises something that never really materialises; the narrative stops dead in its tracks once he moves in with the old lady and it never really recovers. Shows promise, though.
