After an influential apprenticeship with the filmmaker Jacques Feyder in the mid-1930s, Marcel Carné made his auspicious directorial debut with this moody melodrama of a love triangle between the proprietress of a seedy nightclub (Rosay), her gangster lover (Préjean), and her not-so-innocent daughter (Lanvin). While the film is interesting for being the first of the Carné-Prévert collaborations, it is most definitely good enough to stand on its own merits. It's a romantic drama dripping with pessimism and the performances, especially from Rosay, are excellent and full of constrained emotions. The script is superbly constructed, building up to a very good ending and has several memorable scenes and a lot of great dialogue. The direction is quite good as well, with very well selected shots.

A woman of a certain profession gets a visit from her oblivious daughter which results in the aging lady realizing how empty her life really is. A somber story with a more uplifting feeling for the younger girl. Fine acting, writing and direction. Simply a fine drama in that dirtier French tone.
