It took a brilliant mind to take a book of short stories and tie them together in a single narrative (one that actually works, at least). I was extremely impressed with this movie, it made a great yarn with it's share of depressing and hillarious moments, sometimes at in the same instant. This is also one of the first times that I didn't mind Morton, mostly because she dies.

Meandering movies like this are risky, and this is mostly successful. Crudup is consistently compelling throughout, while the rest of the movie is uneven, with some well done tragicomedy.

Wonderful. Based on one of the best and most influential modern short fiction collections in American English. For writing, it's hard to beat Denis Johnson. What a cast! Heart rending performances. Johnson even makes a cameo as the guy with the knife in his eye. Good luck finding it. I couldn't get it on any legal streaming service, so I had to order a physical copy from a Good Will in Minnesota.

Excellent cast. Played out a lot like Trainspotting, but not as gripping. Too laid back to a fault. A few excellent scenes, some dark comedy, poignant philosophizing, surrealism, occasional magic. Just not enjoyable enough to be great.

All the best things I've learned about acting, writing and directing have come from this film. I have nothing bad to say about it! It's utterly beautiful from beginning to end. The most outstanding part of the film is Crudup's performance--one for the ages, adapted from one of the greatest screenwriters' interpretations (Moverman) of one of the greatest storytellers (Johnson). It's virtually impossible to sum up this most underrated masterpiece in 500 characters. It's simply perfect.

Like "Wonder Years" but 10 years later and on acid.

An odd movie, compassionate and strange, depicting semi-criminals and drug addicts surviving on the fringes. Downbeat, but with a touch of mysticism. Not as good as the book, but still pretty good.

This is the biggest hit or miss movie I've ever seen.. If you've read the book then you know what I'm talking about. In the end, I think Crudup makes for a terrible "Fuckhead" (I doubt he read anything by Johnson). There are definitely moments though that had me laughing fairly hard, but am I still being unfair when I say those moments don't ever compare to the book? Whatever. Read the book if you know what's good for you.

Ruined by a final act as painful as Jesus' own.

Erratic movie has some pretty good moments, but some equally dreadful ones.

I found nothing to engage me in this. The score is entirely on the strength of the acting and the execution of ... something.

The film doesn't quite do justice to Johnson's short stories.

Well done. The movie makes being a drug addict seem amusing and tragic at the same time. Dopers: funny or sad, you decide. Whatever, i don't suppose I'll ever really like movies about junkies.
