I have a friend from college who dropped acid one too many times. Now he's always a bit off, like he's constantly tripping just a little bit. Spouts a lot of a psuedo philosophy and accompanying buzzwords. Great guy, but never quite the same since. Playing Andy was Jim Carrey's LSD.

I don't know if it's all that Hollywood magic they do working angles and using costume accessories, but getting to see things behind the scenes, having the curtain pulled back so to speak, I was shocked to the core over the revelation that Danny Devito is actually short. Did not see that coming.

One gets the sense that the real Jim Carrey cannot be seen by camera, for he is always wearing The Mask.

Wouldve been worth not murdering a super obnoxious Jim Carrey on set for that Jackie Kennedy impression. Totally went full retard method and didn't even get an Oscar nom, now we have sad bearded Jim Carrey.

A testament to how much successful actors can get away with in their prime and the lengths Hollywood will go to to justify their obnoxious behaviour on artistic grounds (while claiming they don't approve) as well as America's nauseating tendency to mythologise its own pop culture. The footage of Carrey goofing around and annoying cast members on set is not without interest, but this exercise in pseudo self reflection is too guarded and merely encourages Carrey's own narcissistic delusions.

This documentary fascinates me, but I can't for the life of me decide, whether it's because there is something hypnotic about someone so dedicated to their craft, or because Jim Carrey has become the philosophical equivalent of a three-legged dog. Either way I'd love to see him play Jesus.

Although fascinating to watch, as a documentary it lacks vision. It only focuses on Jim, which is fine but it is Jim from his own eyes, in a situation where there were many other people who's views would've made the experience and documentary so much better. Still a very interesting watch to see Jim Carrey and the things he went through and did for his portrayal.

My rating is not fair. I understand this. Jim Carrey's just too much for me to handle. This would have been the worst movie set to be on.

Jim Carrey - The clown who cried. This documentary shows that Jim Carrey is a broken human being who just put on the robes of a funny man. Nobody apparently told Carrey that the job of an actor means that you pretend to be other people for a living. An actor doesn't have to mentally break down to play a character. Jim Carrey caused undue drama behind the scenes of the film. Just look at the faces of professionals like Milos Forman and Danny DeVito. Pure secondhand embarrassment.

Well made, but rather one dimensional. Great footage to back up one hell of a fascinating story. Though much like others have said, it would have greatly benefited from spending even a very small amount of time on non Carrey interviews. Said interviews would have really fleshed out the doc, thus giving the audience a broader and much more complete perspective.

Both the documentary's style as well as Jim Carrey himself were far more pedestrian than I would have wished for.

Carrey loses himself in his role as Kaufman so much he undergoes ego death and has to construct his identity anew once filming is over. Of course, what's mostly glossed over is what an egotistical act that was to begin with - burdening your coworkers with your asshole behavior in a quest to prove that acting is a Real Serious Profession for Men. The film is critical, but not enough. Focuses too much on Carrey, and doesn't swipe at method acting culture enough. Mattorama12's review is perfect.

Viewed November 25, 2017. Kind of a gem, if only because it's strange and wonderful that something so esoteric got turned into a movie in the first place. I was afraid the film would be a fawning bore. Instead, it's a fascinating look at delusions of grandeur and the lengths we (erroneously) go to for our art. I mean, it's the kind of movie you watch for bizarre details like seeing Jon Lovitz in a silk robe at the Playboy Mansion. Real niche appeal stuff.

I submit that this would not work today if Jim Carrey hadn't completely detached from his 90s persona and become the personification of zen mastery that he is today. Time helps, too -- time away from the havoc he caused because he was too dedicated to the role. It's a fascinating slice from a man whose process doesn't get exercised much anymore, and it takes place at the tipping point of his popularity. Man on the Moon 2 will probably be about Carrey himself.

Mixed feelings. I thought it was a great insight as to what went down on set but Jim Carrey came across as such a pretentious a-hole I couldn't take much of it seriously.

It was frequently uncomfortable watching Carrey's method acting become effectively a piece of behind the scenes performance art, that constantly tortured the cast and crew of MotM. As the doc turns more onto the impact the experience would have on JC's own modern day life it became more interesting. At first I was concerned about Jim's mental state, but some of what he says directly to the filmmakers make me believe he really is after finding himself and all power to him if that's the case.

Who would have thought Jim Carrey was a Buddhist monk in his previous life. I did not know I needed the tea until I started drinking it.

Treading a fine line between profound & pretentious. Not sure what to think of Jim's approach or any approach that takes method acting to this extreme. Regardless, it's an interesting look into the production of Man on the Moon & the mind of said moon man (or the mind of the man playing the moon man). Maybe it's acting, or just wilful insanity; at the end of the day Carrey portrays his character convincingly - at the possible cost of his mental health. Still unsure how to feel about that.

For some reason I have trouble trusting these documentaries. How much is real, how much is just more of the act. Carrey came off as an ass to me most of the time, all in the name of art. Quality of the products is 7.5/10 it get's a 5/10 based on my overall enjoyment.

An inside look at the making of 1999's Man on the Moon, The Great Beyond showcases how Carrey became one of the most revered (and socially outcast) actors of the early 2000s. Still, the exploration into method acting is truly fascinating and noteworthy.

A documentary about Jim Carrey his method acting. It's emotionally wrecking for the family members, it's mentally challenging for the cast and crew. At the same time this looks insanely well done.

Jim says a lot of wild shit and some interesting things slip in. The part where he wanted the stuff he filmed to be integrated into the final film seemed like it would have been very good. I like Man on the Moon but think it could have been even better with some of that added. Andy probably would have liked that idea over a standard movie as well. Got to fuck with people at least a little bit.

I read a lot of reviews that play up the "oh isn't he annoying" angle, but I didn't really see it that way. Most of the people involved with the film seem to understand what's going on and let it happen. I don't really see Carrey victimizing anyone except maybe Jerry Lawler who's a big boy and can take care of himself.

Bar Man on The Moon I'm only familiar with Kaufmann from Taxi, so I'm glad this doc leans much more towards Jim Carrey's career. A great look into what it's like to work with a nutter like Carrey going method on set, doubling as a mini biopic on the man himself. Not much to knock really, although I'd like to have heard more from JC on what was genuinely going through his head as he was continuously pissing his workmates off, and less of the hippy twaddle he's drivelling on about at the end.
