I liked the idea of English speaking foreign film. They all speak English but have more or less a heavy accent. Or at least they speech was not that perfect. Both leads were nice and I enjoyed. The story was meandering but did not carry all the way.

It was interesting movie but the acting was driving me crazy - I though whole movie that the George Devereux is somehow crazy/mad and that there will be some mystery behind of his behavior revealed at the end of movie.

This is a movie I saw with a friend of mind doing research in psychology, and we walked out of the theater with very different takes on the movie. To me, the story seemed truthful, and it was obvious that all the childhood psychoanalytical stuff was BS, but the guy was looking for some reason, so why not fix that. And he feels better as he fixes that one thing. She thought that 'obviously' if fixing the childhood thing worked, it means the analyst was right, and that was causing the trouble.

I can't really understand why Desplechin would willfully make a film this conventional, i mean to be fair it doesn't feel like a cynical hack job and to an extent it has certain vaguely unorthodox elements, but overall it just feels very... ordinary. Amalric and Del Toro are both good in their roles, the cinematography is kind of nice (although a lot of movies look like this these days), but i would expect a lot more considering the amount of talent involved.

A mixtape of psychotherapy, both disjointed and profound. I don't know how some psychic trauma can ever heal, so I found this open space in theme and execution fitting.

A major disappointment. Amalric's character must be a joke, right? Right?!
