Jin-Roh is almost essential for someone interested in japanese animation, or animation in general. Top quality animation and a good plot make it stand out in the vast masses of mediocrity.

Great animation with a good story but the Red Riding Hood theme is beaten to a bloody horse pulp. Honestly by the end, unless you're dense beyond all reason, you'll simply want to scream "WE GET IT ALREADY!" However the rest of the film more than makes up for it.

I didn't mind the overused symbolism all that much, but the lack of an emotional connection makes it a bit cold and impersonal. The animation is really good, the designs pretty solid and the atmosphere is melancholy in just the right way... but I was missing a reason to réally care about what was happening.

Amazing artwork and a frighteningly plausible story. It beats the Red Riding Hood theme beyond death, but it luckily doesn't hamper the experience very much.

The quaint intertextual references are rather annoying (especially for Western audiences for whom Little Red Riding Hood isn't at all exotic...). Beyond that, the institutional commentary and visual style come through quite nicely. Enjoyable and contemplative, but too detached and deliberate.

Confusing and pretentious plot marred otherwise amazing animation and design work.

I had a hard time keeping track of the various political factions that are struggling for control throughout the film, but despite my confusion I found it an excellent action film with a surprising human side.

Amazing Style, amazing artwork, amazing score, everything in this movie is so great that I say: Jin Roh counts to my absolutely favorite Animes. And no doubt the "Killzone" prducers liked the Movie too :-)

The subject matter alone pretty much guaranteed that I'd at least like it. It didn't disappoint. Like a few others have said, the Riding Hood theme was pummeled into us, but the movie still had a great score, great plot and good animation. I liked the twists and turns of the plot and the multiple factions fighting. Very true to life. The Special Force Unit also has a frightening "suit." Imagine seeing just those red eyes down a dark hallway.

One of those great melancholic animes - and like many in its genre, the symbolism is almost masturbatory. Which is too bad because so much of the rest of it is great.

The Little Red Riding Hood/Big Bad Wolf symbolism is very simple and abused a bit, yes, but this movie shines in every other aspect. Some of the best-looking animation I've seen.

Easily one of the best anime of the 90s, in terms of realism, but the plot may be confusing to some (blame Oshii for that).

Beautifully made, but left me a little cold. I'm not sure if it was trying to say anything, politically, about police states and fascism and terrorism, or if it was just a melodrama about an impossible romance. I'm guessing the latter. Red Riding Hood is an overdone symbol, but I didn't mind.

The impressive animation and artistic ambition don't quite make up for the dour tone, slow pacing and over obvious symbolism. Honestly it's trying so hard to be taken seriously as a grownup political/psychological thriller that the film makers forgot this was supposed to be fun.

Excellent animation but I never really felt any connection to any character.

Super lame! loose connection to red riding hood, which it harps on like that's what'll validate it. should have focused on the animation, at least that made the dry meaningless plot bearable.

dark, mesmerizing, lyrical, haunting, beautiful, I could go on and on. Simply put It's a must see even for people who don't like anime in fact I'd go so far as to say it should be watched by people who actively dislike anime it might just change their minds.

Apparently, politics and emotion DO MIX. This is what the Legend of the Galactic Heroes franchise should have been like.

Visually impressive. Nothing but cookie-cutter characters, though. Muddy plot. Leitmotiv "Rotkäppchen" is stretched to its limit and beyond. Satisfyingly brutal ending.

The psychological demise of the main character works really well with the gritty yet ethereal noir backdrop, but it really could have done without all the complex political machinations and the whole "sting operation within a sting operation" twist. Also, more films should open with a bomb killing cops.

Could easily be part of a thematic trilogy of 90s Oshii anime with Ghost in the Shell and Patlabor 2. I don't think the script here is as inventive or resonant as either of those, but the art is fantastic and the sound is absolutely impeccable.

It's a little heavy handed with its symbolism and there is one analogy that is overworked in the dialogue, but the traditional animation creates a haunting dystopian world that does produce some chilling and poetic animated sequences.

The politics are perhaps overcomplicated for what this is, considering it really misses its opportunity to give substance to the people’s movement. Did I care about internal policing? No, abolish all the branches. Did I appreciate the metaphors and imagery? Yes. Compellingly and patiently paced but perhaps haltingly plotted, it’s nonetheless a worthy watch.

I always thought that this would be an action movie about soldiers in super armor, but in fact it's a pseudo-Cold War spy thriller in which all characters are trapped in a murky swamp of paranoia and uncertain allegiances. Good shit.

A deliberate, muted pace and visual style are in distinct contrast to its blatant analogy. It's not at all subtle, but neither is it particularly ill-considered or tacky. In fact it's a rather intelligent film, dour and removed as Oshii's material typically is, and concerned more with the post-traumatic mentality of its protagonist rather than any moral signposting for the political in-fighting of which he finds himself in the midst.
