Watched this as a Letterbox'd review had teamed it up with the excellent 'In This Corner of the World" also a movie sized animation but unfortunately, tho it had a lot of themes that appealled (passing of time, post WW2 Japan, kids struggling with adult size issues, Hokkaido and the staggering seasonal changes) it didn't really engage. a *slight* air of not being realistic and the distinctive tho quite functional animation style didn't help.
