The year is 1975 and little Joe Dirt is dumpster diving at a Grand Canyon tourist stop. After gorging himself on half-eaten snacks, he emerges from the garbage bin, only to find that his parents have left him. Now grown up and working as a janitor, Joe's got a mullet hairdo, acid-washed jeans, and a dream -- to find the parents that he lost, or lost him. (Columbia Tristar)

George C. Scott at the beginning of Patton, Charlie Chaplin at the end of The Great Dictator, Peter Finch's on air delivery in Network and David Spade in front of an under stocked fireworks stand in Joe Dirt.

"Is this queer!?! This queer?!?!" Liked it, got a soft spot for David Spade's comedy. Plus, Joe Dirt is a side to Spade that I've never seen before. Not the snarky lovable a-hole he usually is, but a sweet down on his luck simpleton hillbilly.

There is no better metaphor in this movie for Spade's career than the scene where a septic tank spews shit all over him.

Underrated comedy that actually has a good deal of laughs and quotable lines. Also an inherently nice story about positivity and being upbeat and all that crap that I don't have within me.

Happy Madison Productions is back again with another friends of Sandler film. David Spade gets his chance to star in this comedy about a white trash janitor who becomes an unlikely inspiration to the masses after hearing his life's story on the radio. Full of the expected crude humor and the over use of caricatures and stereotypes, however fans of Sandler and friends should find a decent amount to enjoy in this unusual upbeat journey. Fun & occasionally clever, unfortunately ultimately forgettable for it's lack of real gut busting humor. Somehow this is more of a sweet triumph of the god will spirit than anything else. David, of course does wonders with his character who is a bit too two dimensional making him almost heartbreakingly funny when he should be uproariously funny.

Joe Dirt is one of those surprising comedies that come around once every five to ten years. Joe Dirt is one of those movies that only got popular after it came out on video/DVD. A few SNL favorites come out to help Spade make this a classic. But, it is really the co-stars of the film that make Joe Dirt so funny and likable. Brittany Daniel helps the audience see Joe as a sweet guy. Christopher Walken, Jaime Pressly, and Dennis Miller have some of the best bits in the film.

I don't care what people say. I think Spade is funny, and I find this movie pretty funny and quotable. So feces, incest, and other things are among the jokes made in this movie, and I usually hate things like that... But it made me laugh decently in this. I quote it far too often, and Walken is hilarious in his small role as a janitor.

Spade takes on THE JERK with middling results; admittedly there are a few boisterous chuckles to be had, but much like Martin's original, a narrative consisting of nothing but comedy sketches becomes a little wearying after a while and demolishes any hope of gathering a comic momentum. Ironically, the attempt to shape a narrative by framing the story with Dirt's radio interview make matters worse, especially when the film grinds to a shuddering halt during breaks between radio show appearances!

I can almost appreciate the level of cynicism that went into the production of Joe Dirt. Almost. David Spade looks like a deer in the headlights and has no idea of comedic timing, the plot is a course in cliched and hamfisted hack writing, and the music, dear lord the music. Shoving 800 pop songs does not make a movie good but than again, if you are the kind of person who didn't notice how often the songs are trying to distract you from the movie, you probably like Joe Dirt anyway.
