Nothing has changed really, if this was today Joe would be slinging out minion memes on Facebook and pummeling you with his MAGA hat. But ... there is nothing more uniting than hating hippies. *the spirit of Roger Ebert is giving this 5 stars and a heart for the opening scene*

a smarter movie than I expected, and one mostly undone by its direction. Avildsen is a hack, and a lot of its datedness comes from his laughably stupid decisions. but the script is very strong, and the understanding that these right-wing men are being held hostage by their own inhibitions and insecurities has aged fairly well. some of these people are the worst actors in the world.

What emerges from this is a fantastic morality tale, one that gleefully reveals the two older men to be hypocrites. That is just one of the finer details of this unfussy, yet excellently made film, with Boyle absolutely taking the cake with this one -- his opening scene is hilarious and his closing scene is haunting.I'm into films that are primarily about the counter-culture, as long as they don't actually indulge in it, and this one doesn't, it shows the tragic lives of both old and new culture

Peter Boyle gives a career making performance as the hateful, yet strangely amusing, blue collar worker Joe, a staunch conservative balking at the social change brought about by the 'hippies'. When he teams up with an equally hateful businessman from the upper class to take a stand against the perceived moral degeneracy, tragedy inevitably ensues. Joe is a blunt, unsophisticated statement about the generation gap of the late 60's. It is a great artifact rather than a great film.

Its climax is a taut little shocker that eschews winding down for a gaping stunned gaze on your face, but as much as it leaves you pondering where the characters all went wrong, the scenes leading up to it don't quite seem to have led there without major, sudden contrivance.

Dull, sloppy writing and poorly acted (except for Boyle). Although still an interesting crossover from sixties Hippie-exploitation to gritty seventies junkie films. Only place I know where you can see Peter Boyle in an orgy.

The first half of the journey in the Village is the weak point, but aside from that it's a solid tragicomedy about two men with nothing in common but hate. That moment their repression and jealousy comes out in smoke and sex is sublime.

A very good film exploring the similarities and differences between men from different social and economic circles and the hatred that unites them.

The orgy scene is fantastic and more important than the shocking finale, as it says so much more about our hippie-killers than any other part of the film. Joe isn't subtle at all and it's incredibly dated, but it still manages to be powerful and actually quite bitingly funny, too. Boyle is amazing as always.

Of course it's blunt, because these sorts of "worlds collide" stories don't work unless all the characters are drawn in comically broad strokes. Boyle's performance is incredible, but the film is never as strong as when it plays like a straight comedy.
