It's telling that many users here claim J.A seemed great when they were kids when the film was actually aimed at young adults. It was the first MTV feature adapted from a short skit, and it cynically capitalised on the 'eccentricity' associated with certain strands of 90's alternative music. It isn't remotely edgy, and even with a scant run time of 73 mins (minus credits), it feels overextended. The roach effects have held up well, but it's more of an elaborate goof than an actual film.

The unhealthy amount of nostalgia that came with re-watching this movie was alarming. I was flooded with memories where a strange, fat, 7-8 year old kid, was watching movies like this, "Good Burger"(1997), and "Who's That Girl?"(1987) on repeat, warping all of his future comedic sensibilities. However with fresh eyes, I was able to see just how dumb, juvenile, and blunt so much of it is, but damn if I'm not filled with delight when there's singing & dancing cockroaches on the screen.

The cockroach musical number at the end is actually one of the most awesome and hilarious things I have EVER seen. It's not even worth watching the movie for that though.. Watch the last 5-10 minutes, then you've seen enough to be able to laugh at how ridiculously bad it is without hating yourself for wasting too much time. And you get to see the cockroaches sing and dance.

The humans in JOE'S APARTMENT are pretty boring (Jerry O'Connell isn't too bad as Joe, but that's about it), but the cockroaches are pretty damn fun. Billy West and Reginald Hudlin voice the two lead roaches, and well; the animation used to bring them to life is great, and embodies the grotesque whimsy that popped up a lot in the 90s (JAMES AND THE GIANT PEACH, MOUSEHUNT, etc.) The script isn't too hot either, but JOE'S APARTMENT isn't too bad for a lightweight 80 minutes. Good songs, too.

Enjoyable enough exercise in goofiness lacks the oomph that could have pushed it to classic status (it screams for Joe Dante’s more go-for-broke sensibilities), but if you have to have a one-joke movie about singing cockroaches, this is more than decent, with well modulated performances from the humans helping it to go down fairly easy. Hurt by some mystifying subplots (Huddleston and the urinal cakes) and running gags that go nowhere (Vaughn’s fetishes) that just seem to be excess padding,

Weird and quirky musical that was just barely entertaining enough to get over the handicap of being a musical. Jerry O'Connell's sole talent seems to be convincing directors that he's funny and can act. He's not and he can't.

The film has talking cockroaches who help the guy get the girl. Not much more you need to know really. It can be fun in a bad movie sort of way though.

I don't care if they talk or sing or make me pie. I would have bug bombed that place into the stone age.

A couple laughs from the cockroach musical. O'Connell is not charismatic enough to pull off a feature length film.

the first and i think only MTV sponsored movie that does well, it's a really messed up premise, but for the kind of people that watched MTV at the time that's just par for the course.

MTV Films...what will you think of next? Oh, more garbage? Awesome! I'll greenlight this crap float. Can we get Jerry O' Connell for the lead? Great.

Haven't watched this since near it's release so take this review with that in mind. I thought it was pretty fucking funny and cleverly made. I don't know why but this always makes me think of The Blues Brothers, maybe the music, maybe killer bees.

this movie aided in producing a deeply seated psychological anguish of the potential of being around cockroaches so there's a special place in hell for it.

You really wouldn't expect a comedy about singing cockroaches to be good, but it really is, mostly due to the main character and the shenanigans he gets himself into. It's suprisingly very amusing, so don't question anything and just watch it.

If you watched this movie in hopes of something with sharp wit and style...then WHAT is wrong with you? It's a movie with singing cockroaches. I actually enjoyed the film because I knew it would be bad and filled with low brow humor.

Seen: 3+. This is another movie that I rented on VHS more than once. It came out in 1996, so I was a bit older. The movie had some more mature themes than I was used to, so I'm sure that attracted me to it. That, and talking cockroaches.
