Maybe if my week had been more enjoyable or the other movies I've seen had been better I would've rated this lower; It's pretty formulaic and Keanu is passable at best. Still, it has the supporting cast of my dreams and delivers exactly what I needed: straight-up entertaining (silly) badassery. Now I'm actually kinda pumped for a sequel where Reeves takes on psychotic face-transplanted assassin Nic Cage on an island. Name it John Wick//er Man. Hollywood, please hire me. I got ideas.

It's grade-A schlock and it has no pretensions of being more, so major props for that. Also major points for the stuntwork, but it loses those points back for the lame digital blood effects. And the dialogue is so stupid that it circles back around to being great satire -- John Wick is like Poochie; every second he's not onscreen, the other characters are asking "where's John Wick?" This movie's biggest flaw is that John Wick needed to be louder, angrier and have access to a time machine.

This really suits Reeves; he looks like a natural in the well-choreographed fight scenes, and he delivers his brief dialogue effectively. The action itself works well, eschewing the quick edits and tricks so commonplace now for longer takes and shots to capture the violence (a la The Raid). It's shot with no little style, somewhere between a comic book and a computer game, and it works. There's a great supporting cast as well. Some superior mindless (but knowing) escapism. Fun.

All you need to know is that everyone that John Wick kills, which is well over fifty, gets shot in the head. And that's not to say that he kills everyone by shooting them in the head. But whether they're alive or dead, they get shot in the head regardless.

This is a revenge thriller where the protagonist is avenging the death of his dog. That alone makes it worth watching, but there's a lot more. John Wick is a movie both fun and funny, despite the subject matter. Keanu's performance isn't just action movie good, it's legitimately good. The ensemble cast loves chewing the fat in their various roles. Most importantly, however, the film's action is choreographed, executed and framed expertly, often in inventive or hilarious ways. Great flick.

I thought this was good. John Wick uses a pretty been-there-done-that plot, but it feels different with its slick action and gunplay and solid directing. I give credit to Keanu Reeves for doing a pretty good job as the title character. It's just a really solid revenge movie. A total surprise for me. I would say it's worth a viewing or two to see Keanu in what is probably his performance (and movie) in a long, long time. And for the fighting of course.

This dog-avenging boogeyman assassin was exactly the character that The Babadook was lacking. Directed by veteran stuntmen, John Wick benefits from a mastery of inertia but often feels like it's just going through the motions. It's refreshingly straightforward in its execution, but ultimately insubstantial. It knows its strengths and tries nothing else.

5 stages of grief: headshot, headshot, headshot, a glass of bourbon, headshot. deserve's got everythin' to do with it. too modern by half of course, its vibe resembling the mindset of the flashy playboy villain more than keanu's titular post-TAKEN hero, and while reasonably well choreographed throughout the only scene that really had me on a sensory level was in the nightclub. liked it more for the little comic details and line readings and shameless mythologising. also i'm a dog person so

Embraces cliches to great effect. The directors, former stuntmen, have conviction enough in their considerable skills with action choreography to strip the film down to its essentials. A guy kills a bunch of guys because they killed his dog. What more do you need? This film shatters whatever the previous record was for "most headshots in a movie."

The movie's greatest achievement is its creation of a logical world-within-a-world, of hit(wo)men and codes and propriety, that holds even when it spreads its credulity thin. I also think it's the first film in years where I saw a real, honest-to-God, non-CGI punch thrown and landed in the same shot.

Definitely not your run-of-the-mill action flick. If you can deal with the fact that they work really hard (ALMOST too much, but luckily it comes back around) in the screenplay to get across that "John Wick is a bad motherfucker", you'll completely enjoy watching John Wick be... well... a bad motherfucker! It's a throwback with a modern spin, it's retro but it's new, and it sets up such an interesting universe that could realistically produce more. You're gonna have fun with this one, trust me.

if I'm gonna watch a whole lotta unrepentant murder with no real thematic purpose, it ought to be perfectly set to a good soundtrack and feel like a cousin of Hotline Miami. also, what are the odds of there being three losses to avenge and only one is even tangentially related to a female love interest (who wasn't even murdered or raped)? color me pleasantly surprised

Unlike The Raid 2 which punched far above its weight, John Wick knows exactly what it is and has fun with it. The obsession with 80s throwbacks is growing increasingly tiresome, but Stahleski gets it just right. There are some unsatisfying moments, considering the buildup they're given, but this is the best action movie since Dredd. I just hope they don't turn it into a Taken-esque franchise.

I now know why John Wick managed to kill that many. You see, he was taking cover between shootouts when the others were not! Hits you when you get it. My initial thought was it was because of that unintelligible Russian-like language Nyqvist and his mob were speaking. I'd say if you speak English better, stick with it - easier to communicate with your own folk! And then they killed his dog. Just wait for the sequel when some Spanish cleaners step on his cockroaches. You ain't seen nothing yet.

Somebody finally discovered the correlation between the number of lines Keanu Reves has in a movie and the movie's quality. Our protagonist is allowed to quietly and efficiently kick ass while we watch like blood-starved voyeurs. Film-making at its finest like a Whopper is flame-broiling at its finest. You secretly enjoy every minute if it, and really don't care that there's a good chance the burger's been generously garnished with the body fluid of a disgruntled teenager on Ritalin.

Although the fight scenes - obviously the result of hardworking actors & stuntmen instead of editors - are staged for an all-too-rare clarity & visceral impact, & the writer thankfully, doesn't take the much-too-familiar template of stoic-badass-forced-out-of-retirement too seriously, this is still overrated. Working with genre boilerplate this tired so straightforwardly requires alot more cleverness and at least some surprises to really soar.

How did I sleep on this for so long? A group of Russian gangsters pick on a retired hitman, stealing his car and killing his dog, setting off a hilariously over the top string of revenge murders. The acting is pretty bad, and the characters nothing more than the basest of archetypes with zero development, but the action is phenomenal. Fast, fluid and vicious gun-fu fights that made me both laugh and cringe in sympathetic pain in equal doses. Bring on Chapter 2.

John Wick is a very enjoyable action movie. It has wonderful action scenes that are filled with flair and are choreographed and performed wonderfully by the cast. It's surprisingly funny, too, and contains some impressive world-building, which is a nice added touch. John isn't a deep character, and Keanu Reeves acting is hit-or-miss, but he certainly does well with the action scenes. John Wick may have been the most fun I've had at the movies this year. It's possible that this was an example of going in with very low expectations and just being blown away, but even if that's the case I can honestly say I really enjoyed the movie. The action is excellent, somewhat creative, and the dialogue is hilarious. There are some heartfelt moments, and Reeves' poor acting doesn't detract from it too much because of his sparse dialogue. A former enforcer for the Russian mob (Keanu Reeves), recently widowed, loses his dog and car in one horrible moment, and in seeking his revenge leaves many (many, many) bodies in his wake. B-movie craziness, boosted by a wry sense of humor (suggesting a rather elaborate, even refined, underground society of criminals) and Leitch and Stahelski's vigorous direction. It's a long way from substantial, and may not stick long in the memory, but it's thoroughly entertaining in the meantime.

Simple but solid revenge flick. The ridiculously melodramatic opening scenes setting up the carnage tell you this is a film that doesn't take itself too seriously, so you're free to sit back and enjoy the extremely well-shot and choreographed action scenes. It's not The Raid, but it's closer to it than anything else Hollywood has churned out recently. Scores bonus points for actually including action in an action movie rather than filling the screen with CGI cars and explosions.

Its crazy characters, flashy style & worldbuilding seem hollow & wasteful even in this context but it has a clarity & sincerity of purpose I welcome. It's adorable that the directors are primarily stunt guys & everyone seemed to enjoy just running with that. I endorse this with a slight worry that the other side of John Woo's crazy gets discarded.

John Wick is action flick that succeeds in getting the tone, the atmosphere, and most importantly the action, right. While the plot is rather simple...idiots kill man's dog, man turns out to be John Wick and then goes on a rampage seeking revenge...it establishes its world of assassins-with-a-code quite well, and almost feels like fantasy. The rest is just gun fights, knife slashing and punch-outs, and it is glorious.

A fun stylized flick in the vein of 90's and aughties action flicks that you don't see that often anymore. In line with those movies, it takes care in detailing a fictional criminal underworld, without being too campy or naïve about it, for the uber-elite criminals; all the while managing to build Reeves's character as an effective unspoken threat, and not a joke trying too hard. Straight to the point and focused aptly describes John Wick, both the character and the movie.

Would Keanu Reeves be famous if his name was Dave Smith? Some of the worst acting you'll ever see, you can actually see him mouthing other people's lines so he knows when to speak at times. The plot makes no sense and Willem Dafoe's character motivations change randomly at one point and they don't explain why. Despite it's ungodly amount of flaws it's still just a dumb, cheesy, fun action flick with some hilarious lines. Also, how many movies can say they have Luigi punching Theon Greyjoy?

My enthusiasm for the movie faded fast, because action scenes were just not that well made, Marilyn Manson songs kept playing on the soundtrack, and things like 'hitman hotel' didn't help the plot at all. All the bad guys spoke very broken russian, which was translated with annoyingly silly colorful subtitles all over the screen.

John Wick synthesizes a wide range of tropes to make a constantly engaging, escapist action movie. It also has a wicked sense of humor, style, & fashion. The screenplay takes a wounded existentialist hero dealing with grief & uses that premise to launch a quest. A quest that doubles as a roaring rampage of revenge with tons of gun fu! I have a minor complaint with the dumb villain near the end, but that's about my only complaint. This is as good as Keanu has ever been & highly recommended.

The action and aesthetic here are excellent-the fight scenes are bountiful and brutal, backed by an unnerving soundtrack ("In My Mind" is particularly chilling) and a fittingly cold green look-but the story and characters leave things to be desired: The revenge plot feels a bit too basic (although it's spiced with some morbidly humourous takes on hitman culture) and the only substantial character (Wick) feels all backstory-but the film's short run time does offer some grace in these areas.

A little disappointing. As you can see from the score, I still liked it, but I felt like the setup was a lot better than the payoff; after the first two major action setpieces (Wick's house and the nightclub, both awesome) it loses some momentum and gets a little muddled, relying too heavily on generic long-range shootouts instead of the intricately choreographed grappling and throwing that made those earlier scenes so cool. Like Dredd it's a quality action movie that's not as good as I'd heard.

A very effective modern action film starring a very convincing Keanu Reeves.

Well-paced if pedestrian actioner that doesn't take itself too seriously, but nor does it treat its topic lightly either.

Liked the dog angle. Hated the silly spy world.

The story is not as strong in the end as it is presented, and cold blodded Keanu gets a bit boring after while, because the fight scenes are the same over and over again. The characters are not easily beliaveable as well. In the end a high potential movie ends up pretty average.

Movies about a man and his dog, I really need nothing more. The plot is as simple as Taken or any Denzel retribution action movie, with some cool cinematography and arsenal of mafia caricatures to be slain. Rule #1 of movies should always be: don't kill dogs.

This and other recent similar films hit the right notes but miss the music, neither fulfilling nor subverting the feelings of egotism and insecurity in an audience that makes the "you pissed off the wrong ex-badass" trope appealing, which makes for a film that's slick but empty.

Perfectly entertaining if not deep revenge flick. Reeves does just fine and it was nice to see him in something halfway decent.
