Raft feels a bit stiff at first, but maybe it's because his character has just found out his father is dead. He gets better as the film progresses, though, and Trevor is wonderful as usual. The film has a great seedy atmosphere and, while the mystery is a bit absurd, it's compelling right up to the end.

Decent noir. The plot has a few too many convenient coincidences for my liking and it all wraps up a bit too quickly at the end, but it has a good pace, some atmospheric moments and a good cast of characters. Hoagy Carmichael stands out as the strange toy-making, piano-playing, cab-driving guardian angel called Celestial O'Brien.

There are some well shot sequences and a few very exciting ones, including some great fight choreography. Also you've got Carmichael in a quirky supporting role. Other than that, it's all thoroughly average. Raft never clicked with me, I just didn't care about him. Hasso's nervous little lamb routine got tiresome. Trevor seems to phone it in. But most of all, it was just kinda boring. Nothing much seems to happen, we don't learn much about anyone. Watchable but easily forgettable.

The plot is too shaky to generate enough excitement towards the end. The characters aren't bad but nothing noteworthy is displayed at any point during the film although the beginning is promising.

OK noir. Some of the dialogue and acting was a bit stilted and Raft's Johnny Angel didn't elicit much empathy.

A good one with George Raft. The product felt a little unfinished, but Marvin Miller was such a wonderful pathetic creature that the this became great anyway!
