This movie made me want to go into organized crime. Then I decided it wasn't for me so I opened a pet shop instead.

About 60% of the jokes land, and the talented cast has a lot to do with it. Keaton is good, and Peter Boyle and Maureen Stapleton are fantastic. Where it fails is in not having the kind of joke density that the Zucker-Abrahams films have. When a joke doesn't land in this film, it just sits there all by its lonesome for a while.

I know I've seen this many times, but I can't remember a thing about it except for the guy who calls everyone Fargin Iceholes. Obviously not that memorable.

I bought this movie before ever having seen it, because it had Michael Keaton, tommy guns, and it was six dollars. It turned out to be one of the most pleasant surprises I've ever given myself. It's a wonderful spoof, and it's got a great cast. Really good!

Feh. American comedy was really beginning to die right about this time, and here's a good example of its death throes.

Enjoyable for me. I thought Keaton did a good Cagney.

A dull, featureless, forgettable comedy with a few sight gags early in and not much else worth remembering.

Guilty pleasure points. This is honestly a terrible movie.

At times it's hilarious, at others it's too serious. Keaton while charismatic, plays a surprisingly dry character. What really saves this movie is the strength of the supporting cast. Maureen Stapleton and Richard Dimitri are definitely given the funniest material. Wildly uneven overall, but ultimately watchable.

Silly fun in a noirish setting, just grounded enough for the narrative drama to work but otherwise fully embracing the comedic tone and I found the mix quite enjoyable. The vignette style, particularly in the first half, I felt held it back a bit, restricting the natural flow of the narrative, but the cast, Keaton in particular, and the comedy hold it together. There's not a lot to say here, it's not a complex film, but I had quite a good time with it.

i was 12 when this came out, and it was hysterical. i have since grown older, and so this film is nowhere near as funny as i thought it was. however, that will not stop me from calling someone a fargin icehole every once in a while, or threatening someone with "my mother did that to me once. ONCE!!"

Way too odd to be funny.

Silly mob spoof is certainly no classic, but it is better than Mafia. Heckerling splits the difference between Z-A-Z and Mel Brooks, mixing zany sight gags with more character based humour deriving from ethnic stereotypes. Keaton's performance is simply bizarre. It is a parody of the stiff macho gangsters found in depression era crime films, but it's an angular interpretation that's totally unique. It runs out of steam in the final reel, but the talented supporting cast keeps it lively.

I watched this for the cartoon balls and that wasn't even funny. The guy on Doug Loves Movies who said he liked this is a fucking idiot and I want my 90 minutes back.

I'd score it higher, but a lot of the jokes are getting too dated to be funny. Having to spend 10 minutes looking things up kills the humor.

Parts of this are extremely funny, and I love a lot of the sight gags, but for some reason, I felt like this movie really dragged on too long.

Dopey comedy that has one or two moments (e.g. the "fargin corksuckers" English mistakes that have been immortalized on alt.flame)

At one point in time, I would have sworn that the next big star was going to be Michael Keaton, yet he never delivered on the early promise shown in this movie.

Great spoof of Gangster films that hearkens to a better time. People are too afraid to make good screwball comedies these days because people are too afraid to like good screwball comedies these days.

It hooked me early with the Weird Al theme song, and then released me shortly after. About as blah as a comedy can get for me.

Poor,See Sam Raimi's "Crime Wave" for an example of how this sort of film should be done and what funny is.

Most of the gags are really simple which is probably why I liked this so much more when I was younger. Really made me wonder why Joe Piscopo didn't have a better career, he was really hilarious in this.
