Johnny Got His Gun (1971)
Joe, a young American soldier, is hit by a mortar shell on the last day of World War I. He lies in a hospital bed in a fate worse than death: a quadruple amputee who has lost his arms, legs, eyes, ears, mouth and nose. He remains conscious and able to think, thereby reliving his life through strange dreams and memories, unable to distinguish whether he is awake or dreaming. He remains frustrated by his situation, until one day when Joe discovers a unique way to communicate with his caregivers.

It's a hell of an effective movie, but far from flawless; the performances are a mixed bag, with Robards and Sutherland really shining. The plot also feels a bit disjointed at times, taking too long to arrive at a brilliant but slightly rushed ending. That said, the nightmare feel and that bleak ending are incredible.

I really wanted to love this film, but the subpar acting, tone inconsistency and turgid pacing almost ruined it for me. Still, the idea behind it is great and it's very depressing in spite of its flaws.
