Another watchable Zhang Yimou film, but not one of his best. The most interesting part is the architecture of the dyeing house and how it pertains to the story: separating characters from each other, providing hiding places, and playing a key role in murder and attempted murder. The story isn't that compelling and it develops predictably according to a standard melodrama formula. The cinematography appeared to be stunning, but it's hard to say because the DVD looked like ass.

A good love triangle story that falters a bit in the end. The one part that I won't forget is the badass kid, he laid down the law.

Decent theme, but rather basic in its telling. Zhang Yimou's knack for cinematography comes through a few times (even if it gets repetitive on the cloth).

Very sad and wonderfully acted drama/tragedy. Gong Li is gorgeous.

Viewed November 9, 2021. Pulpy material played with strained arthouse seriousness, giving it a draining feeling of miserabilism and a more or less incoherent series of characterizations. By film’s end, everyone involved has been punished for their transgressions but for unclear reasons. Zhang’s luridly colorful images tend to pack a punch, but he arranges the movie’s most dramatic moments with an airless precision that really wears on you.

Zhang Yimou's best film? Maybe. And a young Gong Li is mesmerizingly beautiful, as always.

A beautiful film about people making bad decisions all the time. I don't think I understand Chinese culture. Why is it that they inflict pain upon themselves (and then constantly whine about it) instead of just being happy? Hmm.. A seemingly simple but ultimately incomprehensible film. Too incomprehensible for me to really care about it.

BlurayRip no MakingOff.

Zhang's second film is another literary drama, this time pure human tragedy, By now I see that Zhang's style, his care for detail, authenticity and visual poetry. He seems to have found a lot of collaborators right from the first film, with whom he continued to work for years. As nice this film looks, I couldn't really get into the story, it felt over the top tragic to me. What's that kid's problem, anyway? Gong Li's boobs are very distracting.

Raise the Red Lantern is sufficient Zhang. Even that is almost too much Zhang.
