Jug Face

I'm a sucker for hillbilly movies (hillsploitation?), especially when our lovable hillbillies worship a wish-granting pit filled with muddy water that spawns inter-dimensional daemons who request the occasional blood sacrifice for the sake of posterity.

"Jug Face" is like the dirty, stereotype laden version of "The Village" if Shyamalan got the budget that he actually deserved. It might not be the first movie to showcase just how regressive, or cult-like certain parts of rural America are rumored to be, but it was unique and embarrassingly, watchable. I can't say it was good, though. Even if she never lands a big budget role, Lauren Ashley Carter, might go down as one of the big scream queens of the early 21st century.

The premise is kinda cool and there are some vague/mysterious elements that got me pumped for an escalation of weirdness later... which never really happens, unfortunately. The story plays out without really adding anything new to the setting that's established in the opening credits, it just takes place within that framework. Not a bad thing, but I was hoping for something a little juicier. Nice jugs though.

Some of the characters were well acted but man, I really felt like I should have been into "the pit" and "jug face" and the mythology in the same way you get when you're telling someone about a movie and you start off with, "I know it sounds nuts, but stay with me!" I didn't know why I should care about the pit and the story was too basic without that.

Loved the intro, loved the soundtrack, loved that creepy folk tale atmosphere... More interesting ending would have made this a perfect movie.

A really successfully original and eerie storytelling. The haunting score supported the creepy story. The acting and directing were not that top notch, but the crocked story saved a lot. One of the leads was Sean Young in a totally different part than her android appearance in Blader Runner.

Solid low budget hillbilly horror that's not just another "we got ourselves a city person, hyuk!" piece of nonsense. Great performances, solid rules within it's own universe. Clever intro too

Very unconventional with some rather unusual and interesting characters. Not afraid of taboos and sheer absurdity. Definitely (and thankfully) no hollywood-material. It's filthy, it's weird, it's fun!

The acting performances were basically the only impressive aspect. I quite enjoyed Lauren Ashley Carter. This is one of the most asinine movie plots ever turned into a movie. You might say it's an analogy to religion in general. The backwoods hillbilly angle was somewhat entertaining. I'm still shocked that Sean Young was part of it. Preposterous ending. Overall, if you can somehow accept the monumental ridiculousness of the premise, this might be enjoyable. Otherwise, it's a lot of WTF.

a poorly elaborated introspection of cult religion & sexual transgression within in eschatological context. Decent soundtrack

Eerie, oddly human parable on sacrifice, not unlike an old, unbowdlerized folk ballad. Could have done a teensy bit more with the premise, but well-done enough to work, and with an ending that asks just what side we're supposed to be on anyway.

What?

Interesting premise to begin with, sadly the story didn't quite live up to its potential. Nonetheless the movie had its moments of suspense and horror (but more of the psychological kind).
