I suspect Almodovar is a woman. His ability to take what would otherwise have been a mediocre Turkish movie screenplay and turn it into a beautiful drama -with a very good calibration of pace- is remarkable.

Was taken aback by the ending not because I care about closed endings but i just wanted to see more of these characters because the end is a tad unsatisfactory (the resolution with the daughter in particular). Great colour palate

A lot of Hitchcockian stylistic elements thrown into this melodrama, along with this filmmaker's usual attention to aesthetic detail, as well as a lot of doublings and symmetries that make the film more interesting but perhaps more mechanical as well. Almodóvar really seems to have a thing for comas. Some of the women seem very beautiful in this film, in particular Michelle Jenner, but also Adriana Ugarte and Mariam Bachir.

Pedro Almodóvar is the wild man of world cinema, a great, flamboyant talent whose films shimmer with his own vivid and hotly sexual take on the world. Not this time. Julieta, adapted from a trio of short stories by Pulitzer-winning Canadian writer Alice Munro, is more of the author than Almodóvar - the movie is a genuflection to the restraint and detail of her prose. This isn't a bad thing. It's just a different approach for the Spanish provocateur.

A gorgeous film about loss and the distance it creates between people.

I really liked the way the colours were used in this film. This reminded me somewhat of Blue Jasmine.

Taken for granted, but this self-contained melodrama (with sparks of his old films) might open up a whole new window for Almodóvar's career.

"Julieta" might have an overly melodramatic main storyline and for at least half of its duration holds few surprises, yet it moves along without being tiring and is benefited a lot by Almodóvar's reliably captivating direction, the very good and realistic acting and the final half, which is arguably a little more challenging in terms of storytelling. Overall it's nothing earth-shattering but culminates very well, has beautiful cinematography and is very believable and at times genuinely moving.

Solid drama from Almadovar. What really stood out for me is Julieta's transition along the years, it was really smooth and believable, and at the same time intriguing and moving.

the melodramatic tone sounds annoying a good part of the movie, but the honesty of the story overcomes most of the melodramatic excess - an extremely powerful story created with absolutely regular characters, in regular life situations (inside certain peculiar events), beautiful.

não chega perto dos melhores, mas é sempre bom ver a gramática do Almodóvar

One of Almodovar's best is a robust melodrama, effortlessly and lightly directed with a striking use of colour throughout. Occasionally seems to be reaching for something more profound, but ultimately rests on being a good story spectacularly told; helped immensely by the twin performances of Suarez and Ugarte, which mesh and marry so well, you would swear they were the same performer!

Narrated like a noir mystery, but is really about dealing with love and loss. Didn't fully work for me. On one hand it was cool, on the other false. The styles didn't really connect, though the story was okay.

The plot overload verges on comical at times (it feels like three seasons of a soap opera condensed into 100 minutes), but the pacing keeps it interesting, and there’s some really subtly cutting commentary that gradually emerges as it goes on. That final shot is an all-timer

A rather ordinary and frustratingly over-ambiguous story is strengthened by the director's handling of how the story plays out, the acting, the two lead actresses playing the same character across several decades of her life, the colours, and the occasional kookiness, all of which helps get the most drama out of what ends up being an underwhelming emotional journey.

I liked it a lot. It felt meaningful to me. The actors are very good and the characters they play are interesting, human and lovable. And there is a scene that students of cinema may want to study: !!! SPOILER !!! The scene where her daughter and her daughter's friend are drying the young Julieta's hair with a towel. The towel covers her entire face. When the girls are finished and the towel is lifted, we see the old Julieta instead of the young. A nice way to convey the passage of time.

This is a film that mostly simmers beneath the surface, and it builds to an affecting and complex conclusion. Almodovar's bright colors punctuate the action as we witness the transformative power of opening oneself to others.

A colourful celebration of life and relationships, but I found this the most somber of his films. Still beautiful to watch and quite moving

really wasn't fussed about this at the beginning but each act is better than the last and i totally cried at the end. like a more muted version of Almodovar's lady tales.

Almodóvar, but somewhat more subdued. You'll know what to expect if you're already accustomed to his works. Doubt this will stick with me a few months down the line.

This is a stylish and visually colourful film by Pedro Almodovar. It has a pretty decent sense of mystery about it, although I'm not sure I followed every plot detail. It features decent characterisation and will likely keep people guessing, in terms of the eventual outcome. There is a certain sadness to it. This is a film you need to concentrate on to fully follow and its certainly an intriguing watch. Its not quite what I'd consider excellent but certainly good enough, I recommend this film.

Ugarte is very attractive, but the relatively banal story is ultimately left too open-ended to satisfy.

DVD Universal.
