It's about as good as the last movie, which I had quite a bit of fun with. The only things harming this movie: The impact and freshness of the other films are gone and some scenes are unnecessarily long. Other than that, it's still pretty humorous and well acted and every bit as entertaining as Welcome to the Jungle. I'm just hoping he next one feels a bit more fresh.

Seriously, Jumanji, you have no right to be as entertaining and high-quality as you are. I dunno who told you you could. In most ways it's a measurable step forward for me from WTTJ, it's funnier, it has a more interesting story, and it very effectively put a fresh coat of paint on the setup of entering the game. Karen Gillan is a superstar waiting to happen, and Danny GD Devito steals, literally, every single scene he is in. Cast him in every movie as the disgruntled grandpa. You're welcome.

A notch better than the first one. Had more heart and excitement (like the monkey bridge scene) I thought The Rock wasn't as good here as in part 1, but Kevin Hart was much better this time around. More nuanced and less scream-y. A fun popcorn flick.

refining the elements that worked in the first film, adding new characters and twists, and improved action direction and adventure setpieces without getting sequelitis by trying to go too much bigger than last time. comedy hinges entirely upon the main cast hamming it up as different characters. Last time Jack Black stole the show as the avatar for a prissy teenaged girl. This time it's The Rock's turn -- as curmudgeonly Danny DeVito. And, like last time, I was laughing the whole way through.

The grandpas inject just enough freshness into the conceit to keep it as alive and hilarious as the first time around. The jokes are effective, the performances continue to delight, and the action's entertaining. It's simple, charming, and polished. Lots of fun.

With my expectations sufficiently raised by how fun the last one was, the second was a touch less enjoyable. Even so, when a movie is as fun and action packed as these are, I dare you not to kick back and have a good time, if you don't you can go back to your hair shirt, self-flagellation, and plain foods, you stoic son-of-a-bitch.

Every attempt (landed or not) at cleverness is in some way a recall of the first film - mostly in how well our leads inhabit their avatars (or not, or vice versa). But that's this film's (pat my chest) Weakness: they don't learn from their incarnated experience, truly, in a way that builds their own internal character. So the new deus ex "glitch" that swaps the personalities out to serve the story feels less like a godsend and more like a copout. Its moments of heart suffer as a result

New gimmicks and characters, added to this one in order to make it different from the previous one, worked well, to my surprise. The new characters were a bit annoying in the first half, but it gets better in the rest of the movie, and their subplot is actually a bit better than the main plot.

A thoroughly enjoyable follow-up to Welcome to the Jungle. Some of the character/avatar mashups don't work as well as in the last one, but they "fix" that for the final act. Overall, it's just nice to find an actually fun and funny adventure movie, it's a genre that almost doesn't even exist anymore outside of animation.

The Next Level certainly feels like what it is: The next level. It doesn’t do anything crazily unique or different this time around, but I think it takes some interesting turns in some real emotional drama. Both sides of the cast are even better this go around, especially Johnson & Black. It still holds a lot of ridiculous action sequences, and it kinda plays into some different game mechanics as well. It’s pretty on par with the 1st, and that’s better than most comedies can say.

Under Quarantine Film Reviews #84: Loses a lot of the charm and freshness it had in its reboot by rehashing elements from its predecessor. It has its moments (especially Kevin Hart playing Dany Glover) but ends up becoming a forgettable sequel.

It doesn't drop off at all from the last one and reinvents itself by being smart with its own premise and the way the real world/avatar variations are used. It is thrilling from a visual standpoint and the plot is not at all hard to follow which allows the audience to focus on the humour. Seasoned actors doing their thing for a slick production and a very engaging adventure flick. Fun for all to be had.

I know I'm in the minority here, but I loved the humor in this film 1,000x more than its predecessors, particularly because of the switch in avatar personalities. Takes too long to build up to the fun parts. I don't really care about the drama of the real life kids; they're not as interesting as the game characters. Nice switcheroo with the grandpa and his friend playing familiar characters. Jack Black continues to be amazing in different parts while the Rock is a true A-lister. Awkwafina did well. Main kid was selfish and unlikeable. Not sure why Alex would risk losing his family to run off with the girl. They went to Winterfell. Fav scene: ostriches.

It obviously won't feel as fresh as the last movie since it's reliving a lot of what that movie did, but it's still a ton of fun. A few new twists thrown in to tweak the formula, but not much to say other than that. If you liked the last one, you'll like this one.

Not quite as good as the last film, but still plenty funny. The actors mimicking each other was easily the best part of the film (especially Awkwafina, she's so funny). The only things dragging this movie down are a few questionable character motivations and some glossed over resolutions to them.

Everything I wrote in my mini-review of the 2017 film applies to this one. The Next Level's setup is both unsettlingly selfish and honestly quite funny (though it's in the trailers). Johnson and Hart doing impressions of DeVito and Glover respectively was inspired. Black playing both a black jock and blonde cheerleader was also pretty great. Gillan again was underused, though Awkwafina fits seamlessly into the cast. Definitely a focus on comedy over plot. Entertaining and gimmicky but not great.

The introduction of the Glover and DeVito characters doesn't work at all and they practically inhabit their own part of the movie separate from the younger characters, literally for most of the final act only to return in an attempt to add some emotional weight to the ending. Overall noticeably less fun and enjoyable than the last outing which I was quite fond of so 'the next level' was a disappointment for me personally.

As cheesy and infuriating as the original (ok Boomers), Jumanji: TNL is still sneaky fun if you go in with the lowest of low expectations. Bad acting and stupid character choices aside, the Rock, Jack Black, Kevin Hart and Awkwafina are clearly having fun cashing this paycheck. The set pieces are gorgeous. Everything else, including plot and pacing is forced and wooden, but it's still a B+ popcorn flick.

Well this is inevitably going to be a "good joke told twice", but in order to keep it fun, the writers have brought in some good new ideas to keep things fresh. However, some of those "ideas" require repeated exposition just to keep the new characters up to speed which slows everything down; the problem being the audience were already there and shouting "get the **** on with it!". You can imagine someone saying "we are definitely not in Jumanji anymore, Dwayne!" but heh, still a load of fun.

Bad sequel, it feels like a copy paste of the previous one, with some slight twists but mostly the same jokes. I did not enjoy it, they worked once in the 2017 film but not twice. Very ugly CGI, how did that happen with a $100+ million budget? I quit watching after a bit more than an hour. Lazy writing and feels like a soulless quick cash grab. Avoid.

Refreshing to see The Rock and Kevin Heart play different characters from their usual "playing themselves". It's a fun dumb comedy, If you liked the first Jumanji its just more of the same. It hits a lot of the same beats as welcome to the jungle, but it's still just as funny. Though, the post credit scene shows the new direction they want to go in with the next.

Saved by its excellent cast, blockbuster charm & some nice heartfelt moments here & there, without those it would be a pretty big downgrade from W2TJ. The plot is messier, the rules of the in-game world are less clear, the villain is super meh, and there's just less heart overall than there was before. Still, the comedy is fun, even when it's low-hanging fruit- though a couple of running gags get old fast- & there are some clever references. The body-swap thing is neat. All in all, worth seeing.

Another fun helping of adventure: the locales are varied and exciting and the action set pieces are expectedly wild (see the mandrills on the swinging bridges). The comedy's a mixed bag; slow-talking Hart is hilarious ("Who is Jumanji?" "Is that Barbara's boy?"), but no one seems to be able to do a Danny DeVito impression. The drama doesn't really work (Spencer's arc was a nice thought but it resolves too easily; the Milo-Eddie tension comes out of nowhere and feels like an unecessary aside).

So, it didn't quite live up to the first reboot but it's still a lot of fun. The cast does a fairly good job of taking on various characters. The initial shock from the first one isn't there though, so they seem to throw in a bunch of new characters to see what sticks and unfortunately, that may have undone things. Watching this in Dolby Atmos super-duper screen might have added to the viewing pleasure.

First rate sequel (largely) builds and improves on its predecessor; again utilises its terrific cast in unexpected ways, all in service to a wonderfully heartfelt tribute to the iconic DeVito persona (whose initial presence pays off in unexpected ways as the film progresses). Minor niggles: takes far too long to take off, setting up an ungodly amount of unnecessary exposition; the final act finding everyone returning to the status quo is a disappointment, feeling too much like a rerun of Part 1.

I thoroughly enjoyed this film for what it is - an action/adventure film with lots of comedy. It doesn't take itself too seriously and it features some decent CGI, with a good cast and a nice amount of action and tension present throughout. A little funnier than the first at the expense of the narrative - kind of ignores its own rules whenever it feels like it. Hart, Gillan, and Awkwafina are all good. I like Jack Black but I get the sense he's not much of an ensemble actor. All his lines sound out of sync with the rest, even if they are occasionally funny - this was true in the 1st film and in Tropic Thunder as well.

Still passes the time okay, but a step down from the previous one,. Because it leans almost completely on rehashing the avatar-characters mismatch joke. The insertion of the DeVito and Glover characters initially provides a fresh take, but the 'old people don't understand what's going on' jokes get old fast too. And while the comedy is the main draw of the movie, it would have been nice if the adventure part had been made a bit more amusing, cause that's nothing more than an afterthought now.

Surprisingly solid popcorn sequel that isn't a repeat of the previous film but neither tries to fix a formula that is not broken. The story feels like rather organic progression to the last one with new and fun twists. I really appreciated how the actors got to stretch their acting muscles while impersonating each other. Villain was the biggest letdown. He was much like a movie villain as opposed to being a classic game villain who tend to be more over the top.
