Just Another Girl on the I.R.T.
Chantel Mitchell (Ariyan Johnson), a hip, articulate, black high-school girl in Brooklyn, is determined not to become "just another girl on the IRT" (the IRT is one of NYC's subway lines). She dreams of medical school, a family, and an escape from the generational poverty and street-corner life her friends seem to have accepted as their lot. But personal and sexual challenges confront Chantel on her way to fulfilling these dreams. (imdb)

Great start with an independent and perhaps argumentative, but reasonable, teenage girl lead. Nice to see a movie about black people without drugs or living in complete squalor. But around halfway through when she meets Ty (who, from his gabbiness, shouldn't even have interested her) and has sex with him, the rest of the film turns into an after-school special. Some of the supporting acting is wooden (but the clinic lady did well). Fav scene: chat with the principal was pretty spot on.

I liked Chantel, and that's what made much of this film so hard to watch.

It's a damn good ride and the delivery scene is a frigging masterpiece, but the epilogue kinda trips everything up.

One of the more realistic depictions of teenagers and teen pregnancy I've seen. Johnson is great as Chantel (though the rest of the acting is only okay) and she perfectly captures what it's like to be a headstrong teenager who thinks they have everything figured out. Even though I grew up in rural white America, I really related to her. That is, until the last 15 minutes, where none of her actions make any sense. Sadly, this confused ending ultimately brings the rest of film down with it.
