Between Crime and Punishment and CRIMES AND MISDEMEANORS, there lies this from Chabrol: for all the complexity of the characters and the questions of forgiveness and so on, perhaps the ultimate message is that homicidal sexuality may be the worst of crimes, but nothing is more contemptible than guilt. Perhaps, also, that "the bourgeoisie" can be defined by wanting to have their cake and eat it too, which could be construed as another way of saying the same thing. Quite intriguing really.

had heard very good things from this film by monsieur chabrol. however, i was somewhat disappointed with it. a littel too slow for my liking. i did enjoy the beach scenes, particulary the pram being pushed as helene gazes out to sea. the ending was also very satisfying. oh, and ms. audran's eyes: spectacular.

One of Chabrol's most thought-provoking, morally difficult, and generally masterful suspense/dramas, and that is saying something because so many of his movies have these qualities.

Very different point of view for a drama/crime movie. Great.

Hard to like, but I ended up liking it. A very low-key kind of thriller with a lot of intriguing twists along the way, mostly made up of surprising character reactions. Very nice to the eyes, too, with the unpretentious, yet immaculate design of mise en scene (though unfortunately screwed up by a dodgy DVD aspect ratio). I think a rewatch may prove to be more exciting.

DVDRip no MakingOff.
