Kabei: Our Mother

Kabei: Our Mother

Drama

"Kaabee" depicts the hardship of a woman in pre and during WWII, raising her kids alone after her husband imprisoned for "thought crime". This movie was directed by Yamada Youji, and as expected the atmosphere of this movie is really wonderful. Although the historical correctness of some scenes, most notably the beach scene, is a suspect. (8thSin)

The simplicity is both a benefit and part of my growing disinterest, especially in its final parts.

A very true and heartbreaking story about love and despair. Yamada has a unique tone in the way he presents a family, in which children and parents have a close band and an equal voice. No doubt one of my favorite filmmakers.

Yoji Yamada is a real pro at simple and emotionally direct story telling, and Kabei: Our Mother, an affecting anti-war drama, is no exception. I love his work with actors, particularly some wonderfully subtle work by Sayuri Yoshinaga. Compare and contrast with Twenty-Four Eyes, another Japanese anti-war story.
