Once I figured out what they were doing, I couldn't really understand all the hype. So if you've seen this than you realize that I did not have it figured out. Cannot recommend enough.

It's one of the most refreshing films I've seen in a long time. So incredibly clever, hilarious and actually just amazingly well done. The film's highlight is the insane one-take opening but it's only the beginning of a very innovative style of filmmaking and storytelling. The performances are all very natural and fantastic, bringing an authentic and honest edge to it. It's really best to jump right into this one without knowing anything, especially if you want the maximum payoff.

This film is for cinephiles. It's not for a general audience. They will hate it. It's for anyone who's ever wanted to make films, or has made films, whether they're professional or just fooling around over the weekend with friends. A movie lover's delight. Here's my exact experience watching this: FIRST 30 MINUTES: Eh, kind of lame, not really sure what's happening. AFTER 1 HOUR: Oh, okay, now I'm getting it. This is kinda neat. AT FILM'S END: Holy shit that was awesome! Can I watch it again?

A lot of fun and creative, especially given the budget. Like others have said, it's best not read about before a watch. The way that it filmed the wonderful opener and then dissects it in the second half is great. I wouldn't say it was laugh out loud funny by any means but I chuckled a few times and loved seeing the chaos that ensued to film it.

One of the most clever set-ups of storytelling I have seen in a long while. The third act is absolutely hilarious. It managed to have me thoroughly laughing out loud on pure juvenile slapstick, but the way it is done is so innovative that it works.

Certainly one of the more clever setups for a slapstick comedy. Like a grindhouse version of 8 and a Half that doesn't take itself seriously and has no tolerances for the pretenses of the "great artist." Ultimately, ends up being a fun little jab at the ivory tower of filmmaking.

Don't give up on this one during this first half hour though because there are two more acts, and each pulls back and casts what you've seen in an entirely different light. By the third act, all the odd distracting weirdness in the first act will be explained. This is no masterpiece, but it's exceedingly clever and manages to eventually be very entertaining on almost no budget to speak of.

The perfect antidote to The Dead Don't Die. If you think you're tired of zombie movies, this will restore your faith in both the genre and the people who enjoy them.

I went into this blind. What a fun zombie movie about movie-making. During the first act I was mildly disappointed when I kept waiting for the twist but they stayed at that facility. The effects were cheesy and some shots lingered for too long. Then it all made sense in the second half. The amount of planning was insane. Fav scenes: Pom!; improvising and holding up the drunk guy.

This movie benefits greatly from going in without prior knowledge - but the slow pacing and awkward tone of most of it could also make this quite challenging. The first two acts - by themselves - aren't particularly good or funny, but could hardly be better at establishing the absolute comedic greatness that is the third act.

It kicks off as a fairly standard one-shot zombie horror movie, full of some strangely assembled shots and flaws, but the second half deconstructs itself in a really wholesome family comedy where everything turns out to be so much more by design than you would ever think by just watching the first half.

As a zombie flick it's amusing enough, but nothing special. Where it does excel, however, is as a love letter to gung-ho filmmaking.

It starts pretty average, but after the "first half", you'll "get it". And then you'll enjoy it way more, and you'll laugh. And by the end, you'll be grinning, whenever you think about this movie.

You don't need to know much going into this movie. If you like zombies, Japanese cinema and movies about movies, you'll love this. It's incredibly well-made, and the attention to detail becomes more and more apparent as the movie goes on. More importantly: it's a LOT of fun. Pretty much a front-to-back riot of belly laughs and puzzle pieces falling into place. How things end up making sense is exceptionally satisfying, and quite a unique experience in combination with the many hilarious moments.

an infectious lowbrow meta-comedy which lampoons various staples of white elephant moviemaking--the megalomaniacal, bullying perfectionist director, the method actor, the bravura single take, the crane shot, and so on—instead paying tribute to on-the-fly improvisation, opportunism and collective effort. in the middle of awards season it goes down like a bottle of "hard water".

Start of as a fresh take on the zombie genre and ends as an ode to low-budget moviemaking. But it did leave me with a "was this all?" feeling, knowing the praise it got.

Acting and camera work might not be perfect, but there's something magical about movies entirely without (visible) cuts that make up for its flaws. Go watch it right now! Since it's a zombie movie it's not very story heavy, and there aren't any major twists but I still think it was more enjoyable knowing as little as possible about it beforehand. Unfortunately some inconsiderate people put spoilers in their reviews, so stop reading now and don't watch any trailers if you haven't seen it yet :)

Basically, you spend around half an hour watching one of the worst movies ever and then everything gets turned around and it's amazing. I don't want to spoil anything, so I'll just say that if you're annoyed that the self defence demonstration doesn't seem to be used for anything, just hang on, it will come.

The idea to this is fun, and seeing how it comes together (or falls apart) is where the film excels, ultimately showing the gung-ho group effort needed for filmmaking. But it takes time and patience to get to this good stuff, and the film's overall dialogue and characterisations just have no meat to them.

Even beyond the concept, which is brilliantly executed (at a certain point it crosses over from paying-off setups to over-explaining everything, but that comes much later than it would have in a worse film), it's just a really funny situation comedy with absolutely hilarious performances. I really can't overstate how funny some of these actors are. I fucking love Harumi Shuhama.

The script for this thing is a total blast, inventive and meta in the best way. Unfortunately, the execution has a huge weakness. The first half is purposefully shattering your immersion and inviting you to speculate which has it's own fun appeal but when the movie changes gears it falters. The movie needed to be a lot more believable for it to work. I felt an overbearing sense of missed opportunity as the acting made me unable to invest in what was happening. This could've been great.
