Kanaval: A People's History of Haiti in Six Chapters

2022
Documentary, History
Every year, Jacmel, a small seaside town in the south of Haiti, celebrates carnival. But this carnival couldn’t be further away from the floats, sequins and sound systems of carnivals found elsewhere in the Caribbean. Here, Jacmellians take to the streets in homemade costumes and props to reenact their history and honour their vodou spirits. This is a film about a town that takes the telling of history into their own hands, and is a celebration of rebellion and resistance. (www.bifa.film)

Intriguingly abstract view of the Haitian "Kanaval" tradition struggles somewhat when trying to rely on a coherent historical throughline, but is still a rich and weighty effort, which definitely feels like it's been simmering for the some 30 year long production time. A beautiful, sometimes galvanising parade of sights and sounds; if it sometimes never elevates itself above a superior museum installation, it's still a fun (and stimulating) ride.
