Kanchana Sita

Kanchana Sita

1977
Drama
1h 30m
The film interprets a story from the Uttara Kanda of the epic poem Ramayana, where Rama sends his wife, Sita, to the jungle to satisfy his subjects. Sita is never actually seen in the film, but her virtual presence is compellingly evoked in the moods of the forest and the elements. (wikipedia.org)

The odd filming style, acting, and music really didn't work for me. The other aspects of the film kept me mildly entertained.

After watching this I couldn't explain what the poem is about, but nevertheless it captures the spirit of epic poetry. Cinema possesses interesting means to explore certain tensions between generic/formal conventions and the abstract qualities of time, and I think this marriage is really fruitful here. I'm going to sound insane, but I'll insist again that Lady Terminator was another such great piece of (far more contemporary) cine-myth-poetry.
