Kanehsatake: 270 Years of Resistance

Kanehsatake: 270 Years of Resistance

1993
Documentary
1h 59m
This film documents the 1990 crisis when Native Americans of the Mohawk Nation blocked access to reserve land which was being appropriated against their will by the White community of Oka, Quebec, Canada. What this film shows is the initial incident and the resulting siege from the Mohawks point of view as an illustration how this is simply a result of resistance to 270 years of European racism pushing them around and leading up to this confrontation. 2nd cinema viewing/5th watch in general. One of the few movies I feel the need to re-watch. One of the most important moments in Aboriginal resistance. Definitely the tipping point towards the radicalization that happened through the 90's and continues today. Solidarity with all my brothers, sisters and two-spirits fighting for our land and culture! FUCK THE 150th

The most important document for understanding power dynamics between NDNs and whites in Canada. This and the Ts'peten standoff should be proof enough that Canada doesn't care about its Native people.

A great documentary detailing the history behind the Oka Crisis, what started it and what the response was to the blockade by the provincial and federal gov't. Seen through the P.O.V. of the First Nations people(the Mohawk nation) it shows a unique perspective on the events and shows us things that may not have been covered or known when the crisis was in the national spotlight. Really worth checking out if you want to understand the Oka crisis and what it was really about.
