Emi (Kinuyo Tanaka) inadvertently loses her ornamental hairpin in the spring waters and is "found" by a soldier in recuperation from a war injury (Chishu Ryu) who cuts his foot on the object. Attempting to downplay the incident, the soldier calls the episode as almost "poetic", a sentiment that the professor (Tatsuo Saito) then misconstrues as the soldier's implicit romanticism for the owner of the hairpin. This is a charming old film with some nice moments, though I see its categorised as a comedy and I'm not sure I'd say its laugh out loud comedy - its got nice moments, like I say but it didn't make me laugh out loud. There is a poignancy to it, though I can't say I feel like I fully 'got' it. Its definitely a subtle film. I liked the settings and some of the dialogue. If you like black and white films, it may be worth a watch, yes.

A beautiful, touching, funny and somewhat sad film. The acting is very well done with great multilayered performances from Kinuyo Tanaka & Chishû Ryû. This is the type of slice of life stories I love, the kind that can leave you smiling even when it ends on a bittersweet or melancholy note.

A movie that perfectly captures the spirit of being bored in July, and of low-key being in love with someone. I still can't get over how cool it is that someone named their movie "Ornamental Hairpin."

Another ensemble of travelers, another countryside. It's familiar territory, but typical Shimizu is typically very nice. Features an almost unrecognizably young Chishu Ryu.

Another Shizimu piece that feels light and leisurely but has an underlying sadness. What was most striking to me was how everyone is constantly frustrated in their personal desires by social obligations. There's a distinct divide between the way things people wish they were and the harsh realities of getting by in the world. It's also a very lovely film with beautiful nature scenes, and I can't help thinking about what Shimizu would have done in the era of color photography.

Ornamental Hairpin estreava há 80 anos no Japão. Meu primeiro Shimizu e não estou desapontada, de alguma forma me lembrou Renoir. WEBRip VXT.

Peculiar script about a guy who apparently gets his foot mangled by a hairpin, and then engages in seemingly detrimental and potentially life-threatening physiotherapy with the inexplicable encouragement of everyone around. A film often inadvertently odd, but still alright.

Got the unmistakable characteristics of Hiroshi Shimizu, but doesn't feel as urgent as his best work. More a pleasant distraction in a serious time, all good and human, and almost irrelevant.
