Only morbid curiosity can explain why about four million people paid money, in the summer of 1996, to see this movie. Every single one of those people must have known it was not going to be good. No one, including the people who made the film, could have believed that Shaq could act. Hell, there are plenty of famous ACTORS who can’t act. Why would anyone think that a mumbling, lumbering, oversized basketball player could do it?

Yeah! Kazaam, the hip-hop, slam-dunking genie makes for a horrendous fantasy/family film. Watching this movie will make any kid dumber, but I suppose they're already pretty dumb if they want to see it in the first place. Utter crapulence!

This movie is so bad. But I love it! I wanted to give it a 100. I really did. It's such a lovably bad, loud movie that seems to not know if it wants to be a serious story, or an over the top comedy. Watching it is quite an experience, and is something that everyone should do.

Oddly plotted film feels like it may have been written with a more adult protagonist in mind – establishing Capra as a bullied child of divorce, and then never paying either of the story threads off, instead thrusting him and O’Neal into the world of pirated music (?) means the film never makes sense or can build a natural sense of rhythm. O’Neal is actually the best thing about it, turning in a warm and amusing performance and establishing a likable and convincing rapport with Capra.

Kazaam, if it weren't so bad, it would be fantastic. this is when Shaq was in his prime. He had his rap career, Shaq-fu, and then there was his first starring role in Kazaam, which combines both his rap and karate "skills."

What the hell did I just watch? Shaq as a genie to a white inner-city kid (I guess), complete with rapping interludes and a ludicrous "evil Arab stealing the genie" plot. It's Aladdin without the charm, humor, effects, or quality. I can tell Shaq's having fun, which is nice. At least someone is. I wasn't. Best viewed as a cultural experiment - how did this get made?

A good part was when Shaq used his genie powers to turn a bad guy into a big ball and then his hoops powers to dunk him into a garbage chute. I've got no quippy sophistry about this one because I just kept one eye on it while playing games in another window.

Not as bad as I had been lead to believe. It's a family film, and Shaq is bad at acting as anything other than the stereotype black male roles of swaggering rapper/playa or strong and introspective so casting him as a genie in a family film was not a good move because he can't do slapstick or be affectionate. The need for pathos as the film comes to an end is tacked on and confusing and the deus ex machina is obvious and lacks drama oh and yes, he does a dunk.

This is one of the most inept, ridiculous films ever put to celluloid by human hands, but oh boy is it one of the funniest films to watch as a group in this physical world. Shaq can't act, much less when he's forced to rhyme every line. Impromptu raps, idiotic plot turns, stupid wishes (come on, Max, rain junk food from the sky?) and a hilariously lame plot culminates in the villain being turned into a basketball and dunked, and a HUGE, haunting close-up of Shaq's face to finish things off.
