Could be great, could be awesome, but the ending is terribly unsatisfying.

These Ealing comedies really don't do it for me. They're fun to watch, and I get the humor, but they're not laugh-out-loud funny to me. More funny in a quiet, whimsical way. The obvious attraction in Kind Hearts is Alec Guiness playing 8 different roles, and he's very good. Dennis Price is quite good in the lead, too. The movie is easy to watch, cleverly plotted, and I'd probably see it again if I caught it while flipping channels or something. But I can't say it knocked my socks off.

I've written before how great of a character actor Guinness is before and he really displays it here playing 8 different characters, one of which was a woman. I wasn't blown away by this film but there was really nothing wrong with it either. I'd probably watch it again but I'm not going out of my way to do so.

A typically reserved attitude prevents this from becoming anything more than mild amusement for me. The obvious highlight is Guinness, who occasionally achieves a moment of hilarity.

Such an sensational plot! Alec Guiness and Dennis Price are also great. Really, this is a great, great black comedy.

An impeccably written and utterly deadpan black comedy. Dennis Price and Alec Guinness (in his several different roles) are superb.

Wonderful film, fantastically acted, with dark humour that is actually humorous. Joan Greenwood is a delight and Alec Guinness has huge fun playing most of the roles.

The best kind of British humour; sharp, and black as pitch.

An unfortunately stodgy piece of brilliant dialogue and performances. Alec Guinness alone makes this worth it.

It was a comedy? Really? I couldn't figure it out.

Perhaps the finest of all British film comedies, this movie features a superb ironic performance by Dennis Price, memorable support from luscious, smoky-voiced Joan Greenwood, and a justly celebrated eight-person portrait gallery from Alec Guinness. The first person narration is wittily written and expertly delivered by Price, and the Edwardian costumes--particularly the gowns worn by the elegant Hobson and the sultry Greenwood--are gorgeous.

Amusing, stiff upper lip British comedy of its time. However the film is driven along by a spoken narrative which is a bit tiresome and the film drags some what, waiting for all the D'Ascoyns to be got rid off, I was glad when 3 were killed off in quick succession.

I thought it was slightly boring, and the jokes were so outlined that I almost never laughed. Maybe just one of those that becomes worse as times change. The whole playing-8-parts Alec Guiness-thing didn't strike me as a fun move, although he did a good job. Not like Strangelove or something, though.

A clever, acerbic, satire on class and aristocracy. I liked it, but the genuinely funny bits are few and far between and it was a bit too dry for me. The circular narrative is nicely done, but Price's voiceover is a little intrusive and starts to get annoying after a while. Good performances from all, but Joan Greenwood's conniving femme fatale was the highlight.

What a treat. Pitch-black and bone-dry, playful script and almost lyrical dialogue make this really special.

"By no stretch of imagination could you and I be described as ever having been "pals". If I remember correctly, we detested each other cordially from the first day we met, with a detestation which increased with our years."
