This worked for me, and only got better the longer I let it sit with me. It feels as long as it is, but it’s not boring and I found myself eventually growing attached to this family. I loved the acting, especially Smith, Ellis, and Bernthal. I’m not sure how much it does differently in the sports drama genre, but it’s touching in all the right places and beautifully directed. I legitimately loved watching all of the tennis matches. I understand the criticisms, I just wasn’t so bothered by them.

The only perspective beyond the rise-to-riches pap is that of a clenched, charmless Will Smith performance, front and center, lecturing, motivating, being a hardass. The success of the Williams sisters somehow lets this narcissist off the hook, since every single decision he makes was written in his "plan" and is therefore unimpeachable in hindsight. The only thing left to do is build a throne, I guess.

Completely by-the-numbers Oscar bait. Will Smith got his accent from watching Song of the South. You know exactly what you're in for when the first line of the movie is, "where I come from, we'z don't play no tennis cuz we'z wuz too busy runnin' from da Klan".

Almost 2 hours of every movie cliché imaginable from the "Every movie cliché imaginable for dummies" book. Even if one can admire the results they have achieved, their journey to said achievements is led by a stubbornly conceited character, whose only characteristic is being authoritative. This makes for a one note and not particularly pleasant portrayal in which Will Smith lisps his way to an Oscar. Also shocked to find out this was shot by Robert Elswit. Aim higher bro.

Very delightful movie. The tennis sequences are actually shot in a very nice way. Brings the poetic brutality to it that it needs. Lotta little tennis references which I enjoyed even if they are a little winking

The movie was great and enjoyable to watch. I would have liked to see more about Serena's story, and I'm still not sure why we need a movie about the father and not the amazing daughters.

I was skeptical about this one - taking two amazing, accomplished women and making a movie about their dad? - but it succeeds primarily because it focuses on his drive to keep them humble even if it means they’re less successful rather than attributing all their skill to his training. Fantastic performances all-round, especially from Smith and Bernthal. A typical biopic for sure, but a very good example of one.

Clean and wholesome portrayal of tennis' greatest family. It's a story worth telling and I was enjoying it. Only thing that kind of rubs me the wrong way is the Oscar baiting Will Smith does. It's Concussion (2015) all over again. He tries to be these mannerisms, but it's still Will Smith underneath. Will, relax. It's okay to just be Will Smith. That's why you're at your best.

Mash-up of two classic genres - the sports movie and biopic; told in a (reassuringly) old-fashioned way as it hits the required beats of both genres, and spotlights Smith's charismatic, old-school movie star performance. Too smooth and predictable in both form and content to justify 2 1/2 hours, though its intriguing ambivalence in its portrait of Richard (he's clearly a perpetual asshole, but you can't argue with the results) gives this a sustaining vitality when the storytelling starts to lag.

A heartfelt movie about parenthood, childhood and racism combined with wonderful performances. It also happens to be a terrific sports movie and perhaps the most patient of its kind since Rocky.

Solid sports family drama. Will Smith delivered, really pulling at the heartstrings in one particular monologue. It's a slow year for movies so he should get an Oscar nom.

Strangely off-putting performance from Smith, who plays the character with seeming intellectual condescension throughout. This undercuts what could be a fascinatingly contradictory character. The girls have charm and Bernthal also displays charisma, but at best this is one of those emotionally-airbrushed, inauthentic American dramas manufactured by the awards-contender machine (i.e. Argo, The Blind Side).

Conflicting. In places, this was masterful: the tennis was shot brilliantly, Smith can be a powerhouse, and the girls were altogether great. And then, there's the undeniable: Will Smith once again playing "daddy knows best" (it's not by accident, folks) in a Williams sister biopic that bizarrely focuses on him and almost ignores Serena's rise to prominence. The Williams sisters exec-produced this, so it must be telling the story they want it to tell... which may be telling in and of itself.

Maybe this works better in a theater where an audience might be able to laugh aloud in joint horror at the unpleasantness of the eponymous father and tennis coach. But man, Will Smith's character is such an obstinate drain that the 2+ hour experience of watching King Richard quickly becomes a stubbornly monotonous one. There are ways to portray unlikable characters in intriguing ways (see: There Will Be Blood, Gone With the Wind, The Social Network, etc.), but this sure ain't one of them.

This is a pretty good sports movie. It's an interesting story and it's told pretty well. My biggest complaint is with the runtime. It's almost two and a half hours long, and it does start to drag in the middle. The father is kind of a dick, but it's the strength of the writing and Smith's performance that makes him likable. And in the end this turns out to be a pretty good sports movie.

I enjoyed this quite a bit. Interesting look into the mind of a hyper determined father (and yes mother too) to turn 2 of his daughters into two of the greatest tennis players of all-time. I would have liked a little more focus on Serena's development as well, but overall it was well worthy of a watch. 7.3 for me.

Smith's complicated, arrogant leading man breathes some new life into the genre. Beautifully directed, acted, and paced, despite the runtime. One of the best sports biopics ever? Time will tell.

I get the sense that Richard is a conflicting character, but this is undermined by the fact that we already know his plans are going to work. And the film does nothing to challenge the results of these plans.

This is a good sports biopic film and family based drama. It's a real underdog tale - something I know is typically well liked/received in the US. Of course the fact its based on a true story makes it all the more compelling. The titular character is someone who is quite frustrating and hard to like in some respects, certainly. It's a miracle the Williams sisters put up with him and his stubborn ways, if you ask me. It's interesting to watch from a race perspective as well.

I have to admit that I found this film to be pretty infuriating. It's subject Richard Williams (Will Smith) does quite a few things that I find to be patently ridiculous, and the film doesn't really explain them or really even consider the possibility that he was wrong. It wants to sell you on the idea that because Williams' amazingly gifted daughters did succeed, clearly his long range plan was right, even if it's never going to bother to articulate the details of that plan.

I was about half way through this when I stopped to watch the Oscars and just didn't feel like finishing afterward. I don't have any specific complaints, but there was also little that stood out. It seems like most biopics these days feel the same--well made but safe.

There's not much to say here. It's really just your standard sports Biopic. Will Smith was good in the lead role. Maybe there could have been some more scenes of Venus and Serena actually playing matches, but then that would inevitably draw focus away from Richard. If you're a tennis fan or just happen to like Will Smith you'll most likely enjoy this. Otherwise if you aren't in the mood for something wholesome and feel good, you might find it a little boring.

Will Smith gets accolades for this and that is good. He is good. Aunjanue Ellis is great and Jon Bernthal is extremely entertaining, both serving to break up the monotony of Richard. A solid sports drama, if a little expected.

I can swallow a lot of contrivances but one that always gets caught in my throat is the biopic that can’t stop reassuring their subjects that one day they’ll be the greatest of all time, and this film has that in spades. What keeps this watchable is Smith and how the film never wants to lift him up as the hero, which gives him the freedom to dig deep into the character. Unfortunately, the film doesn’t go deep anywhere else.

Feel good movie about overcoming obstacles and defying the odds
I’m not a huge Will Smith fan
Personally I feel like a lot of times he picks roles that or less about his talent and more about how big his paycheck is
But he really does out do himself as the pompous and overbearing King Richard
Will Smith deserves this Oscar nomination

It’s about Richard Williams until in the eleventh hour it’s all about Venus Williams. Serena is snubbed in the film and by the film. The ending wasn’t a triumph but bittersweet, which is not the note most sports movies end on. But it was captivating and I didn’t feel the length.

Maybe it's just that I'm not that invested in the subject matter, but this comes across as another movie that could have used some trimming. Get it down to 2 hours, there's a better movie without the fluff. Aside from that, solid but unremarkable. There are deeply emotional moments and Smith is good, but I didn't see THAT much in his performance. Richard seemed like a complex character, the dialogue was entertaining. Kids did well all around. A little slow at times. Will serve intended audience.
