I'm reviewing the Director's Cut here and I can honestly say it's the best Ridley Scott film and one of the best films I've ever seen. It's visually stunning with a superb soundtrack. Many didn't like Bloom but I found him perfect for the part he plays. Not a traditional tough-guy hero but a very moral one that relies on his intelligence and reasoning more than his brawn. Everyone else in fantastic as well. Jeremy Irons, Liiam Neeson, Alexander Siddig, the whole lot. Brilliant film.

The Director's cut is the version you want to see. The cinematography is amazing and the acting ranges from good to great. There's a lot of exploration about honour and religion and it does a good job of showing the many, often conflicting, motivations on both sides of the crusades. The theatrical cut has most of these elements but cuts out so many parts that most of the motivations make no sense which really hurts the film.

After i saw the directors cut , i changed my mind. Before judging this one, go and see the directors cut, it's such a different (and great) experience. Ridley Scott is truly a great director for it's hard to make a movie bolster excellent cinematography, deep characters, great action and war scenes and a story about redemption, love, revenge and searching for a new world...etc, so perfectly blended together around a very sensible subject, Jerusalem and everything for what it stands for.

This score is for the Director's Cut of the film, which is not only vastly superior to the threadbare theatrical version, but stands as one of the great epics of our time. A film that asks why so little has evolved in the discourse between religions, and why we still today fight over a tiny patch of wasteland. This should have been the version in theaters, as it stands alongside Ridley Scott's best work.

Does a good job in not villifying either the invading Christians or the presently-unpopular Islamic factions of the Crusades, choosing instead to give both sides their villains and heroes, and has some neat war/siege sequences. Suffers considerably with its pacing however.

I think it's a good depiction of the crusades and it's time, the middle ages. The sets and costumes are stunningly beautiful, the characters are great, of course only in the Director's Cut! The cinema release makes the Orlando Bloom-character more wooden, one cannot see his motivation as good as in the DC.

Rating from the director's cut. Ridley Scott has clearly done good here. The film has something to say, and it says it well. It is, however, a long haul and I don't recommend anything but the director's cut which takes about 90 minutes just to get going. If you don't want to invest in a heavy film but want some light entertainment, this one's not for you. In that case you want Gladiator.

Poor character development; I could care less what happens to these guys. The noble-to-a-fault main character is just too unrealistic to be viewed as anything other than a caricature. I've only seen the Director's Cut...at about 3 hours, it's long and doesn't flow. Bland...skip it.

DIRECTOR'S CUT: Ridley Scott at his best since Blade Runner. The story is as grand (but more mature than) Gladiator, the dialogue adequately poignant and the cast great (Bloom isn't the strongest lead, but adequate). Mostely: The world created in KoH is simply put beautiful. From the landscapes and sets down to costumes and the smallest props everything feels authentic. Combined with stellar camerawork, editing and scoring the result is truly epic.

(D's Cut) Vastly superior in its completion. It's especially unfortunate, even damning, Bloom was granted the lead. A blemishing miscast that lacks conviction, and overachieves with comely delicacy. Neeson paid tremendous credence to the architecture of the film's 1st chapter. I was hoping for his appearance to bleed over to the 2nd act. Scott: If you grant him 3 hours to conquer, he'll rarely let you down. His eye for lighting is astonishing. He needs room to work.

Poor on almost every level, beginning not only with its historical inaccuracy but its utterly anachronistic feel, ponderous dialogue, tedious characters, and tepid love affair. Why anybody would wish to make a film on this theme and in this setting and spend most of the movie trying to convince the audience that it was a world filled with "nice guys" is beyond me. Avoid. While I am not a big fan of Orlando Bloom, I love this movie. It is nice to see the conflict and the gloomy part of the crusades and what was wrong with it. A bit too violent, in that there is gore for no reason at times, but I think other parts of the movie make up for it. And Ed Norton is such a great actor that his voice alone makes King Baldwin one of the best characters in the movie.

Hollywood historical epics are usually almost entirely without redeeming characteristics, but this has one: the central, modern insert character engages the socio-political field on the basis of his convictions, rather than typical side-step familialism, and when he refuses to compromise his idealism for the sake of a bit of realpolitik that would save countless lives, disaster follows. It's sad that something so basic should make the movie stand out, but there it is. For the director's cut.

The Director's Cut of this movie is a great improvement over the theatrical release; in fact it would probably deserve to be listed separately. The DC is truly a good movie, a very good movie with good acting and some remarkable dialogue. Of course, while it takes liberties with historical facts, it's an accurate portrayal of the world and the politics at the height of the Great Crusades.

Attempts to rewrite the romanticised western crusader myth but does it in a way that's almost equally simplistic & reactionary. That wouldn't matter so much if it would at least fulfill its potential as engaging spectacle but sadly it does even worse in this regard. Despite some great visuals the main character is so terribly written and blandly acted I just couldn't care no matter how hard I tried. Pompous & boring all around failure that wastes its potential for both depth and entertainment.

A lot of hate is out there for this movie, but I think it's perhaps the best modern epic. Better than Gladiator in my books, which is kind of the only other game in town. It's emotionally deep and refreshingly agnostic, not just religiously but heroically as well. Spoiler alert, the Second Crusade ends with the loss of Jerusalem. The fact that our hero is fighting simply so that the city can fall mercifully is a slightly innovative take on the epic.

The rumors are true - The Director's Cut really does make the theatrical look like a skeleton, or a really long trailer (for the record, I gave that one a 65). It's epic as hell, does a good job presenting an even-handed story, is beautifully lensed, and has a great cast - except perhaps Orlando Bloom, who tries hard but just doesn't quite have the chops.
