Kiss Me Kate

That first scene didn't give me much hope for the chemistry between the leads, but after that it gets better. It's one of those films that has a fictional narrative within the film, in this case a performance of the Taming of The Shrew, and both aspects feed off each other decently enough. It's definitely helped by leaning on Shakespeare for some of the dialogue. The musical numbers are creative, though the execution is hit and miss.

Viewed September 15, 2018. Opens with a duet between Keel and Grayson where both lean as hard as they possibly can into their old-fashioned and pompous singing voices, and they don't sound good doing it. But that's sort of an outlier in what is otherwise a rollicking good time.

"If she says your behavior is heinous Kick her right in the Coriolanus" 'Brush up Your Shakespeare' is a witty number and 'Too Darn Hot' sizzles. The rest - meh, not helped by bland leads.

Maybe I find the Taming of the Shrew in-plot too pretentious and overbearing; or maybe I think Howard Keel has all the grace and ardor of a used car salesman at the end of a model year. This musical just didn't have the joy and generosity I expect from the genre. And the pastel costumes are something awful.
