A really sweet story of the slowly thawing relationship between a Swedish scientific observer, and his cranky old Norwegian subject. The fifties setting is beautifully created, and as much is said between the two men by their silences as their words. I'm sure there's an allegory in there too, but this is a wonderfully warm film anyway.

Great minimalistic, satirical and almost surreal movie about single men's behaviour in their kitchens and the futility of observational analysis of said topic.. You know you wanna see it!

Dry, quiet, and very funny. There are no wild speeches, and no kray-zee action, but this well-photographed movie shows you don't need it.

This is a wonderful little bit of absurdism, highlighted by that delightful Scandinavian sense of deadpan humor and some truly touching moments. The film draws on several themes (postwar attitudes, tensions between the Nordic nations, the role of the documentarian, privacy) but ultimately is simply a testament to the triumph of the human spirit over all sorts of nonsense. Great performances all around, a hilarious and clever script, and fine camerawork. Definitely worth checking out.

Full of dry humour and a bizarre concept, it's pretty successful as both entertainment and an examination of isolated human interaction. It does drag a little at the end when it can't keep the balance of the tone steady, but still works out pretty well.

Dry - very dry - and very funny satirical observation on the necessity and rewarding joys of simple communication, interaction, well, basically having a cup of coffee with a friend.

After movin from UK to Norway, i had good opportunity to take a glance to Nordic Cinema. At first i went to see Kitchen Stories. Its a brilliant film about humanity and industrial development ... mostly. When Nordic movies are so good, i cant wait for the next one.

This may well play better in its country of origin, but the set-up for the experiment is so bizarre and incredible that it undermines everything that follows - the growing relationship between the two men is fine in a GRUMPY OLD MEN sort of a way, but again basic credibility issues in terms of the practicalities of the experiment and the byzantine "rules" ultimately makes this difficult to connect with.
