AKA Emperor Kuzco Discovers Santa, or maybe Santa Claus's New Groove. Very enjoyable with a fantastic visual style, fun humor, and surprisingly emotional ending. Familiar tropes are used but done very well. A new Christmas classic.

A delightful Christmas movie with timeless themes and fantastic animation. "Klaus" is a winner whose only failing comes from using contemporary music, rather than relying upon orchestral scoring. At any rate, count this one into my yearly rotation.

(( CHRISTMAS MOVIE MARATHON - DAY 4 }} Surprisingly good modern Christmas movie from Netflix. Quality Christmas films are few and far between these days. It's a reinvention of the origin of Santa, and it works very well. The voice acting, artwork and animation are all top notch. The film even managed to make me feel, which is rare, especially for an animated film. I'll add this one to my list of re-watchable Christmas films.

Charming and fun story, even if it is similar to Emperor's New Groove. This new take on the origin of Santa is a good film created for kids but still enjoyable for everyone else.

This one surprised me. A very thoughtfully assembled Christmas movie. I laughed pretty much all the way through and was genuinely moved by its holiday sweetness. It would have been easy to be obnoxiously cutesy given its premise, but director and co-writer Sergio Pablos handles the material with unexpected deftness. The “deception revealed” plot point necessetated by the set-up is a slight hiccup, but is brushed over pretty quickly. This was definitely worth giving a chance to.

"Kuzco Saves Christmas" might be one of my new favorite Christmas movies. The story here is a great take on the Santa origin, with a lot of clever twists and turns that work better than I've seen in other stories like it. And the animation is fantastic. Every frame is like a painting. If you're not already in the Christmas mood, this movie will definitely get you there.

Gorgeous animation. Simply gorgeous. Movie gets +10 points simply for hand-drawn animation! But the kicker is - the story is pretty solid as well. The characters are also wonderful with quite literally every single one going through an arc, a journey of growth. What a pleasure to watch. (But don't forget the Kleenex!)

The story beats are predictable and the main character is uninspiring, but it's super charming, uniquely animated, and well worth a watch! Hits all the right emotional notes and looks beautiful doing it, and the conceit is pretty clever to boot!

(Rewatch: still great. Sequel, please.) Heartwarming and shot its way up to the top of my Christmas movie list. I like the setting, wooden toys, art style, fish out of water. So-so villains. Would have liked to see more of the romance. Good twist on the traditional Santa Claus story. Stark contrast in atmosphere as the movie progressed. I hope they make a sequel. Could have been shortened for kids. Fav scene: love interest showing Jesper how the town got all bright and cheerful.

Pretty good, beautiful animation and a very cheesy script. The 'liar revealed' scene single-handedly knocks a point off the score, but the ending adds one back on. Klaus is a good and memorable character, the rest is cookie-cutter.

A charming and original Christmas tale. The lavish animation is the true star of this film. Perfectly stylized and superbly fluid, the unique blend of traditional 2D and CGI ensures that characters are full of life and backgrounds really pop. The movie's good sense of humor and strong heart helps overcome some admittedly uninspired characters and trite plot points.

Klaus is an endearing interpretation of the Santa myth that captures both the heart and magic of Christmas. The characters are likeable and the voice-acting is good. The story does have some obvious moments, but it’s well-paced and has one or two satisfying tricks up its sleeve. The pop songs in the soundtrack are uninspired, but don’t detract from the enjoyment of the film. The animation is an interesting evolution of the 2D form, stylistic with commendable shadowing in low-light scenes.

Wise and beautiful, ideal for some quality Christmas time with children. Just read the lamentations of liberals (wherever they can spout their nonsense) to know that this movie is not mere visuals, some pretty, but empty Christmas decoration. The same as the holidays themselves, it holds a message that they find hard to swallow, hence their spiteful reaction. And all this comes from Netflix, no less! How about that for a change?

Guys, this might be new favourite Christmas film. The animation style is absolutely gorgeous, but the script is really good as well. It feels on par with a good Ghibli film, deep and emotional but avoids clichéd genre tropes and generally treats children as intelligent beings who can understand deeper ideas without it having to beat over their heads without subtlety. A pleasant surprise and I am genuinely excited for whatever this studio does next.

It takes some time to engage due to an improvable beginning, but once it gets you it stucks. Beautiful, emotional and smart tale, having a great artistic work behind too. I wish they would have explored a bit better the self-interest of the family leaders but anyway, what it wants to tell it's properly told, but that could have being interesting and a good lesson for kids.

Beautiful animation; stunning, really. Besides that, i think this could've been called "clichés: the movie". Pretty mediocre story, tired script that has nothing original to offer and yeah, it's a feel-good film to watch on a sunday afternoon when you have absolutely nothing to do other than watching Klaus, only on Netflix.

The visual humor allows the film to lean on the strengths of its visuals. But the film can only lean on them so far. Klaus is pretty to look at and that might be enough to turn it into an annual tradition in some households. Just don't look too close. You might see the story strain to fit 90 minutes.

An ‘alternative' Santa Claus origin story is a lovely idea and this does a good job of world-building, helped by some witty and occasionally beautiful animation. The central character played frenetically by Schwartzman does become grating at times, and the story works only in fits and starts. Worst of all is some very contemporary (and terrible) music, which drags one right out of the otherwise charmingly sustained period feel.

A fantastic Christmas movie. The animation quality is fantastic, down right amazing when you consider this was all done in 2D as opposed to most animated movies now a days. The voice acting really brought out the charm in the characters. The setting and story were heartfelt, all be it a little underdeveloped for the romance and villains. Overall a fantastic Christmas movie.

There’s too much that’s cringe-worthy in this world, and it’s ageing me. I laughed once at this. That’s all the medicine I got. Look past the animation and there isn’t an ounce of originality, which is really quite depressing, and more than a little disappointing. The humour is awkward, the score generic, and the beats copy and paste; making all the “magic” too familiar, manipulating your emotions scene to scene, trying to steal a laugh or a tear without earning it for itself one iota.

Flat and dull animated film starts well, with a gleefully oppressive atmosphere to the town Jesper is banished to, but the hectic wisecracking from Schwartzman (aimed at a younger audience) quickly becomes tiresome; more interesting is Simmons' Klaus and his ultimate "true purpose" but its a shame he ultimately takes a back seat. The cleverness of the premise and some creative animation keeps it barely watchable.

201213 I'm having trouble deciding why this film works as well as it does. Jesper's growth is fairly linear. The plot is predictable. It does not challenge. Yet, there's some inspirational magic in this feel-good re-imagining of the origins of Santa. Novel idea for the Santa development will keep interest through the first viewing. Does Jesper draw us in as he accidentally turns himself from a spoiled brat into a generous human?

Watching this reminds that I really don't like Christmas movies. While this is visually appealing, the plot beats just struck me as juvenile and sappy, boasting character archetypes I could only define as nauseating. To its credit I did dig its methodology of explaining Christmas mythos which can be tied into the plot in clever ways, but ultimately its use is in service of the most rudimentary story imaginable.

A couple of the less obvious tropes that this movie pushes are 1. That a festival of unity and gift-giving was attached to the birth of Christ rather than the other way round and 2. The 'good immigrant'. In this case it's a community of Sámi people that happily give up their way of life in order to assimilate with the English speakers' industry. I hope to one day see a movie about the Oompa Loompas that didn't volunteer for slavery but wanted instead to have chocolate imported!

What a delightful surprise this movie was! I have had my playlist of Christmas movies for decades, and while I occasionally find something new, they generally go in the mix as "also good". This one shot straight into the "favorites" category and gets a watch several times each season. Beautiful animation, wonderful characters (including a very respectfully done portrayal of Sami culture), music that makes your heart soar in your chest, and a fantastic story.

This plays like a lost Rankin-Bass special with really classy animation. Like a Rankin-Bass special, it's best not to get too hung up on the story since it's a fairly typical "bad guy with a secret heart of gold reforms" story, with some fairly ineffective extra villains thrown in for good measure. That may sound like I dislike it, but I don't.

This animated Santa origin story is okay but I ultimately don't get the hype. It's nice but unremarkable and aside from a few laughs, there's not all that much distinguishing it. The animation style is different but not really for me (though I appreciate seeing something hand drawn again for once.) It's pretty good, it's sweet, but not something I'll watch again. Pretty charming.
