Does a great job of keeping its cards close to its chest, thus demanding detective work of our own in order to piece the mystery together. This makes for a fun, engaging and incredibly active viewing experience that managed to keep this viewer guessing even when I felt I had figured everything out. And Benoit Blanc clearly needs his own tv show.

I really enjoyed it! The cast is stellar, some stand-outs being Daniel Craig and Chris Evans, with Ana de Armas almost stealing the entire show. Like a good who dunnit, the film manages to keep you guessing even when you think you know what happened or what's going on. It also has some decent humor thrown into the mix as well. Definitely one of this year's best and most entertaining films. Definitely go see it!

An unbelievably joyful watch that cackles with glee as it elevates the murder mystery genre while constantly upending your expectations and bombarding your brain with sharp and hilarious dialogue delivered by great performers (especially Craig and Ana de Armas) exquisite visuals and production design, sublime cutting and scoring, and a perfectly-layered mystery that constantly scatters its pieces across the board and lets you chase after them. Benoit Blanc is an icon.

A new fashioned whodunit spiced with a slight Hitchcockian thriller flair, and served with a who's' whosville of eccentric environments and acting. To its credit every twist - predictable or otherwise - felt refreshing in its moment. Benoit Blanc has a nice cheeky balance of Poirot, Nick Charles, and his own whimsy, and I'd follow him inside a donut with a hole in the middle inside a donut hole any time he's free. (P.S.: I love how Rian's post-Wars social media user is a pubescent nazi.)

A good-hearted, fun movie. Heavy on idiosyncrasies in the ensemble though not finding a way to fully utilize them. The story works in its use of its main character’s intentions. This provides a nice balance to what might otherwise feel like a convoluted machine of a plot. Humor works well and there’s some nice setup/payoff sprinkled throughout. I’m not sure if the subtext of illegal immigration does anything other than serve as a device, but it feels excusable. Solid entertainment

Although Johnson winds up choosing sides in his 1-sided identity politics metaphor, the rest is fantastic, specifically bc he hides his partisanship until the very end. The rest is absolutely thrilling & suspenseful w/ Johnson piling on twist after twist (if anything, he overdoes it). I would've also preferred it if the detective were played by someone quirkier (more Peter Falk, less man-of-action) to enhance the comedy but it's still one of the most entertaining films I've ever seen.

A murder mystery that is very well shot and stars Daniel Craig being gloriously hammy. It is consistently funny through dialogue and its editing. It also does some fun things thematically with the whodunnit genre that I won't describe so as not to spoil anything. The main point against the film is that it doesn't fully utilize the suspense inherent to the genre.

It goes down easily and has a couple of chuckles here and there but Johnson doesn't have a handle on what he wants - farcial twisting of whodunnit tropes or traditional mystery with humour. The performances range from bizarre (Craig) via grotesque (Collette) to sub-catatonic (Evans), with only Plummer effortlessly adding much-needed polish... why this was greeted with such a raft of hosannahs is beyond me, but I say that so often these days.

It's very lucky that de Armas who should have been Oscar nominated for this performance has enough charisma to even out how annoying Craig's role is. How to address my second-largest qualm about the film without spoiling it...? I guess I'll just say this: The whodunit is one of my favorite subgenres, and while the story is pretty well put together and I like that it's in some ways an anti-whodunit, I feel that it would've been more fun if it had stuck to the formula instead.

It's a film that, for much of its runtime, is squarely focused on conversations between people in a large house. And yet the camerawork is swift and fun, the compositions are stimulating, the dialogue is Dickensian, and the plot wants to make you feel smart before it tricks you. The second act experiences a small lull as the main cast is pushed aside, but the climax is as it should be for a classic whodunnit. Also, some really excellent subtext to boot. A wonderful time.

Knives Out succeeds by updating the murder-mystery formula, delivering an engaging story with plenty of comedic beats in unexpected places and a well-directed ensemble cast. Johnson retains the large country manor, character archetypes and foreign detective; but opts for a layered (over convoluted) plot, ensures none of the characters are vastly superior, adds a bit of action and a touch of social commentary about wealth and power. It's a witty, enjoyable film, though Craig's accent was suspect.

Awesome. Johnson not only sets up a brilliant whodunnit that resolves like clockwork, he uses his characters to give the plot some weight and meaning beyond just figuring out who died how. And he does it with such flair and humour. Craig is as meta-dangerously disarming as an acting Poirot, Stanfield a perfect straight man, and de Armas has somehow risen from horror movie extra to leading lady in less than five years, and I can't wait to see what she does next.

Hits all the right tropes of the classic locked room mystery without being too derivative, which seems to be a common trend for Johnson. Even if there's nothing new under the sun, Johnson has a knack for doing things well. "Knives Out" is a respectable movie and a decent mystery, but it begs the question, why make an Agatha Christie look-alike when a perfectly respectable, star studded "Murder on The Orient Express" came out only two years earlier?

I'm willing to be a little generous because I adore the cast, and even though the narrative took a somewhat-unconventional route (ie. revealing what happened to the victim relatively early on), I kinda gave myself to the magnetism of the movie and really suspended my disbelief. Could have been a little funnier to a wider audience but I was actually quite entertained by the under-the-radar, almost British-style humor. Remove a character or two to give more space to others and this is a home run.

Exhausting. opens up introducing the family as if it's going to be an ensemble film, but we never learn anything about them after that and most of them mostly disappear. They're to-a-person horribly drawn characters. It feels like lots of their screentime ended up cut. Plummer is good, but a lot of the louder acting wears - especially Evans. The pacing is all off; information is just dumped on the audience when it needs to be - too much at the beginning and the end and not enough in between.

I clearly did not love this like other people did, but I certainly didn't hate it. There were some dips where I wasn't that entertained, but it did redeem itself. It has an amazing cast but the problem was that almost none of them had enough to do. They almost all deserved more. Ana de Armas was a pleasant standout. I'm not sure what I expected exactly from the actual mystery but even though it was solid enough, I was still a little disappointed. Didn't feel that suspenseful.

The framing of the mystery is interesting, but due to the way information is revealed the culprit is too obvious. The dysfunctional family dynamic is really good but is put to the side for the mystery which, honestly, isn't as engaging as the other elements presented in the film. I also wasn't too big on the cinematography; the presentation was cheesy in how it conveyed certain ideas.

Knives out, even with its entertaining pace somehow allows the mind to linger too long on some puzzles and actually reveal too much. Johnson constructs a great whodunit, mining a major trope of the genre (the secrets that come with being upper class) for all its political and personal conflict. Ana de Armas is amazing and sympathetic, playing a convenient punching bag for the family's problematic bigotry. The picture loses some steam in the middle as the mystery stops for a moment. But things kick into high gear at the end as the mystery is solved--with a fun last sequence that reaffirms the decency in the world.

Toni Collette and Don Johnson were particularly enjoyable, and I don't think I've ever seen Craig play such a character before. Only small complaint was a stretch that dragged a bit because of the unusual story structure, but I'm not sure it could have been pulled off without it.

What truly elevates this whodunnit is the sober recognition that the ideas registered herein as comic absurdities are not in actuality so far-fetched. Certainly these are caricatures - and very entertaining ones at that - but the resemblance is plain to see. There are entire swaths of people who blissfully have no regard for privilege and caste until it no longer suits them. It's a case of affluenza which draws as much from The Rules of the Game as it does Clue, Christie, and Hitchcock.

Could've been a classic with a bit more chaos.

I'm generalizing here, but from the onset, this immediately drives home the inferiority of both whodunits and American comedy as genres. The game of "Clue" which this movie mimics is about interactivity. It isn't known for being realistic, compelling or suspenseful, and it isn't funny. Flat caricatures are neither funny nor interesting characters, and I struggled to care which of them killed Christopher Plummer. The movie improves as it progresses, but it had pretty much lost me by then.

Like, I get why you'd have the Poirot stand-in explain the plot. But here he literally explains the main characters theme to the main character... Rian Johnson gets a little too laser-focused on the plot after that, but laughs still abound. The cast is just sensationally fun. There’s some slightly eye-rolling virtue-signaling in the last third (take a drink every time you hear the phrase “good person”), but this was a blast and I look forward to revisiting it.

Not very well written with poor editing and with an inconsistent visual style (some of the camera angles seem to be used for no clear purpose). The only interesting aspect of the film is the Peircean nature of Blanc's approach to inquiry.

As enjoyable as the story is, it's the characters who are a problem: the film fawns over its lead, making her 101% flawless, to the point where she seems unreal -- in a film where all other characters are unreal stereotypes, a main character who I can identify with would be nice.

the issue with the whodunnit is that the expectations of the genre are such that the audience will run through every possible permutation of killer and motive, and for it to be truly shocking, it must be one they miss. this isn't the case here; however, every element of the film works, and even if the film's narrative undermines that suspense, there is no shortage of joy in watching it. I've never seen an actor have as much fun as Daniel Craig does here.

Here I am on my 2nd of 30 days without weed and I see the girl from 13 Reasons Why light a joint then immediately discard it into the fire. Talkin bout "I can't wait to get into Fran's stash" bitch gimme that shit! That throwaway line was an insulting reminder to the most obvious clue in the movie which only compounded my rage. If I was in Marta's position regarding the inheritance I'd of given 20% to Michael Shannon and told everyone else to fuck off

Gets excellent mileage out of the genre tropes and Daniel Craig's Foghorn-Leghorn impression will either grow on you or grate on you. Armas really impresses. Highlights are a Michael Shannon V. Don Johnson slap fight, Craig waxing poetic about donuts, and a grade-A retractable knife gag.

While traditional whodunnits rely on the audience knowing as much as the lead detective, they somehow pulled off showing (what you think is) the big reveal to the audience in the first half of the story... only to find out that there's more to it than that. It's beautifully shot. The acting is fantastic. There's so much substance to this film; the second watch had me finding all these easter eggs that I missed the first time around.

I have a thing for whodunnits and this one is dun right. Rian Johnson creates a wonderful atmosphere, the conceit is super clever and the cast is pitch-perfect. Ana de Armas becomes a freaking star and Daniel Craig is definitely a donut hole of acting goodness. The tropes and expectations are subtly subverted (like the maid discovering the body and NOT dropping the tray) and the political commentary was also aces. A very fun romp. Will see again.

Due to its excellent cast and clever writing Knives Out delivers not your average by the numbers whodunit but subverts expectations and keeps you guessing until the very end.Daniel Craig and Ana de Armas especially shine here.Also if you pay close attention you will be able to enjoy a lot of small payoffs that get set up earlier in the film.

Honestly at a loss for words after this breathtaking flurry of twists, humor, and gorgeous creaky mansion cinematography.I sat extra close to the screen to avoid humans, so close that I felt I was going to fall into the halls of the estate and that was a fantastic sensation. Craig is brilliant and hilarious. I worry that in my praise of this movie I'll get excited and accidentally spoil some small detail best left as a surprise.this movie was good. The end.

Knew I was in for a rollicking good time from the first moment Craig hit that piano. Johnson brings his gleeful genre-play to the whodunnit to great effect. The script is a hoot, knowing exactly when to subvert the expectations (A dirty word nowadays) of the genre and when to play into them. The movie also has a patent contemporaneous political edge that might age the movie, but felt approriately pointed. The murderous row of actors are delightful, especially Craig (donuts), Evans and de Armas.

An engaging and hilarious whodunnit with one of its biggest twists being an early reveal and a shift in the point of tension that works wonderfully well and adds a good heaping of heart to the already whip-smart script (see the knife line tie-in at the end, the return of the mug in one of the best final shots I've ever seen). The final twist is well-drawn but a little drawn-out, but that's the only misstep in this marvelously decorated, cleverly edited, and perfectly acted mystery/family drama.

A well-constructed detective story that keeps elbowing you in the ribs in a way that is often charming and at times trying (the topical jokes seem like a gratuitous way of dating the film). Strangely enough, the direction feels a little impersonal, which certainly wasn't one of Johnson's failings in the past.

Yoked out with Longest Day levels of star power and guided by a steady storytelling vision, it's hard not to appreciate all the charm. I will say that the contemporary culture references feel somewhat shoehorned into an otherwise timeless gothic family thriller. Some dialogue sounds a little too much like adults trying to come up with what the kids today are saying, but the real issue is that this period of American history is pretty much the LAST I would ever care to feel nostalgic about.

A who-done-it that didn't make me lose attention or lose track of the cast. I wish we spent more time with the members of the family, but they were at best a distraction from Chris Evans. Nice amount of twists to the end without any magical handwaving like other similar movies where the detective just magically figures things out without any previous clues. Ana de Armas does a good job but gets a bit clueless at times. Fav scene: the will reading with everyone crowding her outside afterward.

This is a hard movie to rate. The first half is definitely more intriguing while delivering exposition, but can be a little slow at times. The Second half is definitely more thrilling, but also more predictable. Johnson does a good job of not letting certain parts get too gimmicky. As good as the cast is a majority of it is thrown away to focus on only 4 of them. Ana De Armas stood out in a surprisingly good way. Ultimately you can have some fun if you go in with tempered expectations.

Enjoyable whodunit is if anything a little too underplayed at times, missing the campy energy that distinguished the best of the 70s Agatha Christie cycle - this feels like the MURDER SHE WROTE version (shout out!) and is still fun, especially with such a distinguished cast - though most are used as stooges for Craig's amusing spin on Poirot, and Armas and Evans' duelling chief suspects. Perhaps one too many twists for its own good, but it's par for the course in this genre!

Goes to show Johnson's potential when there are no big Studios meddling around his work. It was a clean cut, refreshing detective movie, with just the right amount of twist and play with genre cliches, while still having good ideas of its own. But what I liked about it the most was, that the twists weren't shoved in your face in a sherlocky kind of way. I really enjoyed it,

Fun movie, but I went into it aware that it's a twisty guessing game and my mind went a little bit wild in the first act, kind of lessening the impact of some of the actual revelations. Most of the family members and cops also end up feeling like shallow plot props after the first act, and some cheats (puking) and clunky dialogue (weaksauce) stick out like sore thumbs despite (because of?) the otherwise good writing. Still, fun. I miss the guy who wrote Brick, but this'll do.
